  • Publication number: 20030110163
Abstract: Massive amounts of multimedia data are stored in databases supporting web pages and servers, including text, graphics, video and audio. Searching and finding matching multimedia images can be time and computationally intensive. A method for storing and retrieving image data includes computing a descriptor, such an a Fourier-Mellin Transform (FMT), corresponding to a multidimensional space indicative of each of the stored images and organizing each of the descriptors according to a set similarity metric. The set similarity metric is based on Locality-Sensitive Hashing (LSH), and orders descriptors near to other descriptors in the database. The set similarity metric employs set theory which allows distance between descriptors to be computed consistent with LSH. A target image for which a match is sought is then received, and a descriptor indicative of the target image is computed. The database is referenced, or mapped, to determine close matches in the database.

  • Patent number: 6548427
Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to a tissue product with improved flushability. Specifically, the incorporation of both a temporary wet strength agent and an alkaline reagent into the tissue product results in the tissue product having high initial wet tensile strength and a high rate of wet tensile loss. The high rate of wet tensile loss is caused by the high pH of the alkaline reagent that is incorporated during the dry end of a tissue manufacturing process. The temporary wet strength agent is added in the wet end of a tissue manufacturing process. In certain embodiments of the present invention, glyoxylated polyacrylamide may be used as the temporary wet strength agent, while the alkaline reagent may be in dry form or may be encapsulated.

  • Publication number: 20030021271
Abstract: A wireless network of multiple base stations, each communicating with multiple remote terminals, exhibiting simpler design and enhanced inter-user and inter-base interference rejection. The downlink from a base to the multiple remote terminals employs a combination of time division multiplexing (TDM) and time division multiple access (TDMA) to multiplex signals carrying data to the remote terminals, and spreads the multiplexed signal with a pseudo-random noise (PN) sequence. The uplink from each remote terminal to the respective base uses orthogonal code division multiple access (O-CDMA) coding to multiplex a variable number of channels for each remote terminal. Short O-code sequences are derived based on pseudo-random maximal length sequences and quadratic residue sequences to introduce sufficient randomness into the multiple access coding to reject inter-base interference without the use of PN signal spectrum spreading.

  • Patent number: 6460612
Abstract: A heat pipe and method that utilizes a multi-layered shape memory alloy (SMA) as the wick structure. Each layer has a different transformation temperature. The inner layer of the SMA begins contracting first when heat is applied along the surface of the heat pipe. The contraction reduces the effective capillary radius rc of the wick, thereby maintaining or increasing the capillary pumping pressure and thus the ability to remove heat. As the temperature of the heat pipe continues to rise, the outer layer begins contracting to reduce the capillary radius further. As a result, the local pumping pressure is maintained or even increased to accommodate higher local heat flux and remove the heat to prevent “dry-out.
