  • Patent number: 8265481
Abstract: The path selection and wavelength assignment to a selected path are performed by mapping the wavelength reach to the demand distribution (agile reach) resulting in a 50-60% increase in the network reach. The network reach is further increased (about 2.2 times) when on-line measured performance data are used for path selection and wavelength assignment. The connections may be engineered/upgraded individually, by optimizing the parameters of the entire path or of a regenerator section of the respective path. The upgrades include changing the wavelength, adjusting the parameters of the regenerator section, controlling the launch powers, mapping a certain transmitter and/or receiver to the respective wavelength, selecting the wavelengths on a certain link so as to reduce cross-talk, increasing wavelength spacing, etc.

  • Patent number: 8246804
Abstract: A method for the treatment of an aqueous stream containing both anionic and cationic species is provided. The method comprises the following steps. Circulating water continuously through an essentially closed loop, the loop incorporating an ion adsorption unit which, in turn, comprises a water permeable layer of an ion adsorbing material. Feeding an aqueous solution containing the anionic and the cationic species to the essentially closed loop. Passing the circulating water, including the aqueous solution containing the ionic and the cationic species, through the ion adsorbing material in the ion adsorption unit in a continuous manner. While at the same time applying an electric potential across the thickness of the layer of ion adsorbing material and removing from the ion adsorption unit more concentrated aqueous solutions of the separate ionic species. Discharging each of the aqueous solutions from the ion adsorption unit.

  • Publication number: 20120003726
Abstract: Biochemical assay apparatus uses a container with a sleeve of electrically-conductive material (300) to heat it. The heating is done inside a chamber and a contactless heat sensor (110) such as a thermopile or a bolometer, also inside the chamber, is used to monitor the temperature of the electrically conductive material (300). There are many factors that distort the output of the heat sensor (110), particularly as the temperature rises and properties such as emissivity change, or as time goes by and tarnishing and dust affect the heat sensor output. Because the sleeve has low thermal mass and heat transfer only has to happen over short distances, it is relatively easy to calculate a change in actual temperature of the electrically conductive material (300) when subjected to a known pulse of drive current and this property can be used to calibrate the performance of the heat sensor (110) in situ in the chamber.

  • Patent number: 8061216
Abstract: In an aspiration flow measurement system, a flow channel is provided for receiving an aspiration fluid flow therethrough. The flow measurement system further includes an aspiration flow measurement chamber and a flow sensor that is configured to generate a raw signal indicative of the rate of fluid flow through the flow channel. A control system is configured to monitor the signals indicating the flow through the flow measurement chamber, and to determine when a value of the raw signal is indicative of a disruption caused by the presence of an air bubble, wherein the control system generates a filtered signal of the flow rate that is exclusive of any signal values that are indicative of a disruption.

  • Publication number: 20110249013
Abstract: A computer system provides a plug-in architecture for creation of a dynamic font. The computer system can incorporate a new filter function into a filtering layer of a font program. The filtering layer includes pre-defined filter functions to transform a base font into a new font. The computer system applies one or more font rules in the filtering layer to the base font. The font rules are implemented by the new filter function and at least one of the pre-defined filter functions to randomize an appearance of each character in a character string. The character string rendered with the new font has a dynamic and randomized appearance.
