  • Publication number: 20080071843
Abstract: Systems and methods for reordering dimensions of a multiple-dimensional dataset includes ordering dimensions of multi-dimensional dataset such that original D dimensions of the data are reordered to obtain a smooth sequence representation which includes placement of the D dimensions with similar behavior at adjacent positions in an ordered sequence representation. The ordered sequence representation is segmented into groups of K<D dimensions for placement in a K-dimensional indexing structure.

  • Patent number: 7346625
Abstract: Techniques are provided for performing structural joins for answering containment queries. Such inventive techniques may be used to perform efficient structural joins of two interval lists which are neither sorted nor pre-indexed. For example, in an illustrative aspect of the invention, a technique for performing structural joins of two element sets of a tree-structured document, wherein one of the two element sets is an ancestor element set and the other of the two element sets is a descendant element set, and further wherein each element is represented as an interval representing a start position and an end position of the element in the document, comprises the following steps/operations. An index is dynamically built for the ancestor element set. Then, one or more structural joins are performed by searching the index with the interval start position of each element in the descendant element set.

  • Publication number: 20080040346
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for generating at least one output data set from at least one input data set for use in association with a data mining process are provided. First, data statistics are constructed from the at least one input data set. Then, an output data set is generated from the data statistics. The output data set differs from the input data set but maintains one or more correlations from within the input data set. The correlations may be the inherent correlations between different dimensions of a multidimensional input data set. A significant amount of information from the input data set may be hidden so that the privacy level of the data mining process may be increased.

  • Patent number: 7310624
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for generating a decision trees using linear discriminant analysis and implementing such a decision tree in the classification (also referred to as categorization) of data. The data is preferably in the form of multidimensional objects, e.g., data records including feature variables and class variables in a decision tree generation mode, and data records including only feature variables in a decision tree traversal mode. Such an inventive approach, for example, creates more effective supervised classification systems. In general, the present invention comprises splitting a decision tree, recursively, such that the greatest amount of separation among the class values of the training data is achieved. This is accomplished by finding effective combinations of variables in order to recursively split the training data and create the decision tree. The decision tree is then used to classify input testing data.

  • Patent number: 7305378
Abstract: Distributed privacy preserving data mining techniques are provided. A first entity of a plurality of entities in a distributed computing environment exchanges summary information with a second entity of the plurality of entities via a privacy-preserving data sharing protocol such that the privacy of the summary information is preserved, the summary information associated with an entity relating to data stored at the entity. The first entity may then mine data based on at least the summary information obtained from the second entity via the privacy-preserving data sharing protocol. The first entity may obtain, from the second entity via the privacy-preserving data sharing protocol, information relating to the number of transactions in which a particular itemset occurs and/or information relating to the number of transactions in which a particular rule is satisfied.

  • Patent number: 7299126
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and a method for evaluating a plurality of moving queries over moving objects. The method, which can be embodied in a computer readable medium containing computer readable code, constructs motion-adaptive bounding boxes around the objects and queries and indexes the objects and queries based upon the bounding boxes. Predictive query results are used to optimize the evaluation of the moving queries. The bounding boxes vary in size and shape depending on the speed and motion direction of the objects and queries. The system of the present invention includes the moving objects and queries, each having an associated motion-adaptive bounding box. The system also provides for a monitoring system capable of monitoring the location and motion of the moving objects and moving queries and of evaluating the moving queries. The monitoring system includes a motion-adaptive query index and a motion-adaptive object index.

  • Patent number: 7287023
Abstract: The present invention provides a ViST (or “virtual suffix tree”), which is a novel index structure for searching XML documents. By representing both XML documents and XML queries in structure-encoded sequences, it is shown that querying XML data is equivalent to finding (non-contiguous) subsequence matches. A variety of XML queries, including those with branches, or wild-cards (‘*’ and ‘//’), can be expressed by structure-encoded sequences. Unlike index methods that disassemble a query into multiple sub-queries, and then join the results of these sub-queries to provide the final answers, ViST uses tree structures as the basic unit of query to avoid expensive join operations. Furthermore, ViST provides a unified index on both content and structure of the XML documents, hence it has a performance advantage over methods indexing either just content or structure.

  • Patent number: 7243100
Abstract: Attribute association discovery techniques that support relational-based data mining are disclosed. In one aspect of the invention, a technique for mining attribute associations in a relational data set comprises the following steps/operations. Multiple items are obtained from the relational data set. Then, attribute associations are discovered using: (i) multi-attribute mining templates formed from at least a portion of the multiple items; and (ii) one or more mining preferences specified by a user. The invention provides a novel architecture for the mining search space so as to exploit the inter-relationships among patterns of different templates. The framework is relational-sensitive and supports interactive and online mining.

  • Patent number: 7139688
Abstract: A technique for structurally classifying substructures of at least one unmarked string utilizing at least one training data set with inserted markers identifying labeled substructures. A model of class labels and substructures within strings of the training data set is first constructed. Markers are then inserted into the unmarked string, identifying substructures similar to substructures within strings of the training data set by using the model. Finally, class labels of the substructures in the unmarked string similar to substructures within strings of the training data set are predicted using the model.

  • Patent number: 7116223
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to monitor a container associated with an item. According to one embodiment, an indication that a container has been opened is received. For example, the container may transmit a signal when a person opens the container to access an item. Based on the received indication, ownership of the item may be transferred and/or another item may be provided (e.g., to the person who opened the container). According to other embodiments, item quality information, item warranty information, and/or security information are determined based on the received indication. According to still other embodiments, a sender receives a notification based on the indication or the indication is recorded as an acceptance of an agreement. In yet another embodiment, the indication is used to verify that the container was opened in accordance with an item requirement.

  • Patent number: 7076463
Abstract: A system and method of decentralized e-commerce for searching and indexing non-standardized content is provided. The content is tagged with provider tags to identify content fields of information within the content and is stored remotely at one or more network locations for searching and indexing by a portal server. The provider tags are devised according to each provider's own tagging scheme. The provider tags are in turn cross-referenced with portal tags of a portal tagging standard using key information supplied by the provider. The portal server uses the key information to conduct field specific searching and/or indexing of the decentralized, non-standardized content.

  • Patent number: RE39184
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product for identifying and creating persistent object fragments from a named object. For example, a digital content description of a named digital object can be dynamically parsed, and persistent fragment identities created and maintained to facilitate caching. Named digital objects include but are not limited to: Web pages described in XML, SGML, and HTML. The object description is revised by replacing each object fragment with its newly created persistent identity. The revised object description is then sent to the requesting node. Depending upon the properties of a fragment, this can either enable the fragment or the revised object description to be cacheable at the server and/or client device. For example, the object description can include a dynamic part which would otherwise prevent the object from being cached. The dynamic part can be recognized and treated as a separate fragment from the object description.
