  • Patent number: 6807464
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to facilitate a distribution of information. According to one embodiment, vehicle control information is determined, the vehicle control information being dependent on time in formation, operator information, and/or vehicle information. For example, an intersection control signal may be determined. The vehicle control information is then transmitted to an automobile device, which in turn arranges for the vehicle control information to be provided to an operator. For example, a graphical representation of an intersection control signal may be displayed on an automobile's windshield.

  • Patent number: 6785663
Abstract: Periodic patterns in time series data can be hierarchical in nature, where a higher level pattern may comprise repetitions of lower level patterns. In the presence of noises, these repetitions of lower level patterns may not be perfect. A novel model, namely a meta-pattern, is provided in accordance with the present invention to capture these higher level patterns. The meta-pattern can not only provide a more compact representation of patterns but also capture the regularities of pattern evolutions, which may not be expressed by previous models due to the presence of noise. A method is provided to mine meta-patterns in an iterative manner by discovering meta-patterns and their supporting subsequences in the form of lists of segments of contiguous repetitions of a meta-pattern. The number of pattern repetitions in each said segment is at least a predefined threshold min_rep and the distance between any two adjacent segments is at most a predefined threshold max_dis.

  • Patent number: 6785669
Abstract: A method of performing a flexible similarity search is provided. In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of: (i) constructing an indexed representation of one or more documents to be used in the similarity search; (ii) specifying a target document and a similarity function to be used for the search of the one or more documents for which the indexed representation is constructed; and (iii) finding a document among the one or more documents for which the indexed representation is constructed which is similar to the target document, based on the specified similarity function. Thus, the invention creates a universal index for text similarity searches so that a user can specify a function at the time of query.

  • Patent number: 6782396
Abstract: A method, program and system aligns students and teachers according to dominant learning and teaching styles. The invention creates a menu of learning styles, and a second menu of teaching styles. Students are then tested using each learning style contained in the first menu, and the test scores are entered into a student database. Teachers are also tested using each teaching style contained in the second menu, and a database is then created for the teacher test scores. Using the student and teacher test scores, the system calculates a best-fit match between students and teachers according to corresponding learning and teaching styles.

  • Patent number: 6772225
Abstract: A policy enabled caching system based upon policy rules which define whether a request from a client is directed to a cache or a server. The client is coupled to a plurality of caches and to at least one server. The caches may store a subset of the data stored on the server. The policy enabled caching system stores policy rules which comprise at least one matching condition, where every request containing a matching condition falls into an associated class. Each class will have an associated routing rule, where a routing rule defines the type of routing for all the requests which fall into that class. The policy enabled caching system will receive the request from the client and classify the request according to the policy rules. The request is then routed according to the routing rule associated with the class to which the request belongs.

  • Patent number: 6772152
Abstract: A system and method are provided for discovering significant patterns from a list of records in a dataset. Each record includes a set of items, and each significant pattern includes a subset of items such that a significance of the pattern exceeds a significance level. A significance is computed for each item in the list of records to determine significant items. The records are randomly sampled to select a sample portion of the records. Ambiguous patterns are identified against the sample portion of the records and verified against the entire list of records in the dataset.

  • Patent number: 6691110
Abstract: A system and method for determining patterns in a data sequence constructs a compatibility matrix which provides a probability between an actual occurrence of an item and an observed occurrence of that or another item between each item in the data sequence. Candidate patterns are generated. The candidate patterns include items in the data sequence. The candidate patterns are checked against the data sequence to determine a match value based on the compatibility matrix, and significant matches are determined based on candidate patterns having the match value above a threshold.

  • Patent number: 6643684
Abstract: A system and method that enables a given sending user to specify a set of delivery policies and have them used for the electronic delivery of a given message, the message potentially having several heterogeneous parts (e.g., text and pictures) each of which is handled differently, and delivered to multiple heterogeneous devices (e.g., PCs, Smartphones, fax machines), and possibly to several distinct recipients. The factors with which a sender can qualify their delivery policies include: time/date, transmission cost; whether the transmission can be forwarded; receiving device capability; and network reliability, speed, and security transmission. Methods are also provided enabling a sender to specify that particular transmissions be redirected or copied, e.g., “send fax copy to my broker and my accountant.” In one embodiment, the delivery policies may be specified using PICS.

  • Patent number: 6631309
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for a datamining service vendor to provide subscribing power customers with electrical consumption data services. The system and method provide a mechanism by which electrical consumption is measured at the point of consumption over incremental periods of time. Customers can subscribe to a datamining service vendor which monitors and collects customer electrical consumption data at each addressed location within the customer's electrical network and provides the customer with a detailed report of power consumption statistics and trends. This allows the customer to make informed consumption choices resulting in cost savings to the customer and conservation of power generation resources.

  • Publication number: 20030128859
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for accessing, transmitting and storing a client's hearing profile on a network, which results in the creation of an audio font that is customized to the client's hearing preferences. In turn, the client's audio font may be accessed by the client and transmitted to a client's selected digital audio device via a network connection, which attenuates the sound drivers of the digital audio device to properly filter and adjust audio output in a manner that best enhances the sound quality to the client's needs and preferences. The invention allows the client to customize the sounds emitted from digital audio devices by providing audio preference feedback which modifies the selected audio font to more accurately represent the audio preferences of the client.

  • Publication number: 20030122670
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to monitor a container associated with an item. According to one embodiment, an indication that a container has been opened is received. For example, the container may transmit a signal when a person opens the container to access an item. Based on the received indication, ownership of the item may be transferred and/or another item may be provided (e.g., to the person who opened the container). According to other embodiments, item quality information, item warranty information, and/or security information are determined based on the received indication. According to still other embodiments, a sender receives a notification based on the indication or the indication is recorded as an acceptance of an agreement. In yet another embodiment, the indication is used to verify that the container was opened in accordance with an item requirement.

  • Patent number: 6587848
Abstract: Methodologies are provided which use affinity lists in order to perform query retrieval more effectively and efficiently. The invention comprises a two phase method. In the first phase, we find a threshold number k of candidate documents which are retrieved by the method. In the second phase, we calculate the affinity value to each of these k documents and report them in ranked order of affinities. The first phase of finding the k most valuable candidates is accomplished using an iterative technique on the affinity lists. Once these candidates have been found, the affinity to each document in the set is obtained, and the resulting documents are rank ordered by affinity to the target document.
