  • Patent number: 7039639
Abstract: A method and apparatus for optimizing information-retrieval related system performance based on users' communication relationships. Users' interactions and relationships with each other are tracked by a ‘relationship analyzer’ that queries multiple heterogeneous information sources, such as e-mail logs, organization charts, calendar entries, phone logs, etc. A data structure is created for each user reflecting the intensity of communication relationship with other users, and modified over time as the data in the information sources change. A relationship group is defined based on the data structure and preference or importance ratings for each type of communication relationship that includes each user's group of highest-priority other users. A derived relationship group may also be defined based on high-priority users of a user's highest-intensity relationships.

  • Patent number: 7016968
Abstract: A system, method, apparatus, and computer program code for providing content to a device, wherein operation of the device may be interrupted as a result of a display of content by the device. According to embodiments of the present invention, a plurality of content segments can be identified or selected. In addition, a device (e.g., computer, cellular telephone, personal digital assistant) associated with a recipient of the content segments can be identified or selected. The content segments can then be provided to the device in such a way that display of a content segment by the device may interrupt operation of the device, thereby providing focus on the content segment.

  • Patent number: 6948116
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for creating a meta-document. The method collects at least one hyperlinked document based on a seed document and cross-references the documents within the collection. Cross-referencing includes resolving an anchor and an object, and indexing the resolved anchor and object based on respective locations within a meta-document. The method organizes the collected documents and seed documents. The method also publishes the meta-document including the cross-referenced documents. Preferably, the method of collecting includes accepting the seed document having an anchor pointing to an object, and adding a document containing the object to the collection. In addition, collecting includes the step of manually modifying the collection. The meta-document is a collection of the seed document and the hyperlinked document. Further, the index is one of a footnote, an end note, a table of contents, and an appendix.

  • Patent number: 6934390
Abstract: A system to transfer electronic information includes reception of a command to transmit a file of electronic information. In response to the received command, the file of electronic information is automatically copied to create a copied file of electronic information, the copied file is transmitted, and the file of electronic information is rendered unusable. By rendering the file of electronic information unusable after copying the file, no additional usable copies of the file will remain. As a result, a degree of protection is provided to any copyright interest in the electronic information embodied therein.

  • Patent number: 6922700
Abstract: A system and method for providing similarity indexing and searching in multi-dimensional databases. In one aspect, given a set of data points in a multidimensional space, the values of the data points on each dimension are partitioned into a plurality of grids, wherein each grid is assigned a grid value. Given a target data point, similarity candidates (i.e., data points that are similar to the target data point) are identified based on matching grid values. An inverted grid index comprising an index on the data points falling into each grid of each dimension is utilized to identify similarity candidates. A similarity selection process is employed to select the closest identified similarity candidates for output, which utilizes a similarity function to measure the closeness of each identified similarity candidate to the target data point. A preferred similarity function is one that considers a subset of the dimensions in which a point falls within a similar grid of the target point.

  • Patent number: 6871201
Abstract: A method is provided for data classification that achieves improved interpretability and accuracy while preserving the efficiency and scalability of univariate decision trees. To build a compact decision tree, the method searches for clusters in subspaces to enable multivariate splitting based on weighted distances to such a cluster. To classify an instance more accurately, the method performs a nearest neighbor (NN) search among the potential nearest leaf nodes of the instance. The similarity measure used in the NN search is based on Euclidean distances defined in different subspaces for different leaf nodes. Since instances are scored by their similarity to a certain class, this approach provides an effective means for target selection that is not supported well by conventional decision trees.

  • Publication number: 20040260663
Abstract: A technique for structurally classifying substructures of at least one unmarked string utilizing at least one training data set with inserted markers identifying labeled substructures. A model of class labels and substructures within strings of the training data set is first constructed. Markers are then inserted into the unmarked string, identifying substructures similar to substructures within strings of the training data set by using the model. Finally, class labels of the substructures in the unmarked string similar to substructures within strings of the training data set are predicted using the model.

  • Patent number: 6823377
Abstract: Systems and methods for collaborative web caching among geographically distributed cache servers, particularly, latency-sensitive hashing systems and methods for collaborative web caching among geographically distributed proxy caches. Network latency delays as well as proxy load conditions are taking into consideration during hashing. As a result, requests can be hashed into geographically closer proxy caches if the load conditions permit. Otherwise, requests will be hashed into geographically distant proxy caches to better balance the load among the caches.

  • Publication number: 20040225644
Abstract: A technique is provided for efficient search engine crawling. First, optimal crawling frequencies, as well as the theoretically optimal times to crawl each Web page, are determined. This is performed under an extremely general distribution model of Web page updates, one which includes both stochastic and generalized deterministic update patterns. Techniques from the theory of resource allocation problems which are extraordinarily computationally efficient, crucial for practicality because the size of the problem in the Web environment is immense. The second part employs these frequencies and ideal crawl times as input, creating an optimal achievable schedule for crawlers. The solution, based on network flow theory, is exact and highly efficient as well.

  • Publication number: 20040225642
Abstract: A method is provided for Web crawler data collection. The method includes the step of collecting information associated with a plurality of queries, the information related to results of the queries and/or responses to the queries. Estimates of return probabilities, clicking probabilities and incorrect response probabilities are then calculated at least in part based on the collected information. The estimated return probabilitues relate to a probability that a search engine will return a particular Web page in a particular position of a particular query result page. The estimated clicking probabilities relate to a frequency with which a client selects a returned Web page in a particular position of a particular query result. The estimated incorrect response probabilities relate to the probability that a query to a stale version of a particular Web page yields an incorrect or vacuous response.
