  • Patent number: 6542889
Abstract: In one aspect of the invention, a method of performing a conceptual similarity search comprises the steps of: generating one or more conceptual word-chains from one or more documents to be used in the conceptual similarity search; building a conceptual index of documents with the one or more word-chains; and evaluating a similarity query using the conceptual index. The evaluating step preferably returns one or more of the closest documents resulting from the search; one or more matching word-chains in the one or more documents; and one or more matching topical words of the one or more documents.

  • Publication number: 20030061213
Abstract: A method is provided for data classification that achieves improved interpretability and accuracy while preserving the efficiency and scalability of univariate decision trees. To build a compact decision tree, the method searches for clusters in subspaces to enable multivariate splitting based on weighted distances to such a cluster. To classify an instance more accurately, the method performs a nearest neighbor (NN) search among the potential nearest leaf nodes of the instance. The similarity measure used in the NN search is based on Euclidean distances defined in different subspaces for different leaf nodes. Since instances are scored by their similarity to a certain class, this approach provides an effective means for target selection that is not supported well by conventional decision trees.

  • Patent number: 6523040
Abstract: A method for performing table summarization. In a data network requests arrive at random from viewing devices (i.e., PC, PDA, laptop, etc.) to view objects which oftentimes contain large tables. The table summarization method compresses the rows/columns of the large tables in addition to the column formats to more easily display the table on the viewing device, which oftentimes has a limited display capability. A set of default rules is specified for determining how the table compression is to be performed. In addition to the default rules, a user may specify a user viewing preference to further modify the table display. The table summarization method is performed dynamically. That is, it is performed in real-time in response to a user request which typically is issued over a data network such as the Internet.

  • Publication number: 20030023451
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a system, method, apparatus, means, and computer program code for notifying a user of a privacy level associated with an interaction conducted by or otherwise involving the user either before, during or after the interaction. Once a determination is made regarding what level of privacy is being applied to an interaction, a notification may be sent to the user to inform the user of such privacy level. In some embodiments, the notification may include an icon or other image that is displayed on a user device (e.g., computer, cellular telephone) or with software that the user is using during the interaction. Different interactions between the user and the service provider may have different privacy levels associated with them.

  • Publication number: 20030016799
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to facilitate a communication associated with a destination identifier. According to one embodiment, a request to facilitate a communication in association with a destination identifier is received from a party, the destination identifier having a primary purpose other than communication. The destination identifier may comprise, for example, an automobile license plate number or a Social Security number. Information is then transmitted to enable the requested communication. For example, a message from a requesting party may be forwarded to an electronic mail address associated with a license plate number.

  • Publication number: 20030014321
Abstract: A method, computer program product, and data processing system for conducting purchases of products with only a single action to be performed by the purchaser is disclosed. A user captures an image of an item for purchase with a client device, to which the user performs only a single action (e.g., pressing a button). The client device transmits the image and a client identifier to a central server, which identifies the item and combines the information about the item with customer billing and shipping information to automatically create and process an order for the item without any further intervention by the user.

  • Publication number: 20030014533
Abstract: A system, method, apparatus, and computer program code for facilitating attention to a communication provided by one entity to another entity and for allowing an entity to prioritize communications sent or received by the entity. A method for facilitating attention to a communication includes associating a quantity of at least one attention unit to a first entity and allowing the first entity to provide a communication to a second entity. The said communication has one or more attention units and at least one associated criterion associated with it, either by the first entity or by default. When the criterion is satisfied, the number of attention units associated with either the first entity and/or the second entity may be changed.

  • Publication number: 20030008662
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided wherein a mobile user device operates in accordance with a location policy and user device information. According to one embodiment, a location policy associated with a location is determined. For example, a school may establish a location policy that prevents students from wirelessly exchanging information during class. User device information associated with a mobile user device is also determined. For example, it may be determined if the mobile user device is being used by a student or a teacher. It is then arranged for the mobile user device to operate in accordance with the location policy and the user device information.

  • Patent number: 6505207
Abstract: A technique of the system for generating a reduced representation of input data, wherein the input data has a first set of feature variables and a class variable associated therewith, comprises the following steps. A second set of feature variables is determined from the first set of feature variables, wherein the second set of feature variables corresponds to mutually orthogonal vectors. Then, one or more of the feature variables associated with the second set of feature variables are selected based on a level of discrimination with respect to the class variable. The input data is then represented using the one or more selected feature variables.

  • Publication number: 20030005288
Abstract: A system to transfer electronic information includes reception of a command to transmit a file of electronic information. In response to the received command, the file of electronic information is automatically copied to create a copied file of electronic information, the copied file is transmitted, and the file of electronic information is rendered unusable. By rendering the file of electronic information unusable after copying the file, no additional usable copies of the file will remain. As a result, a degree of protection is provided to any copyright interest in the electronic information embodied therein.

  • Publication number: 20030004854
Abstract: A method, program and system for facilitating a request for proposal (RFP) in an electronic marketplace are provided. The method comprises posting the content of the RFP in an electronic marketplace. A portion of the RFP is sent to at least one of a plurality of primary and secondary marketplace participants (i.e. general contractors and subcontractors). In one embodiment, primary and secondary participants can directly access the RFP posted in the electronic marketplace. The primary and secondary participants can then attach their proposals directly to the RFP so that other marketplace participants may examine the proposals. In another embodiment, access to the posted proposals might be restricted to specific parties, rather than all marketplace participants.

  • Publication number: 20020199009
Abstract: A system, method, apparatus, and computer program code for providing content to a device, wherein operation of the device may be interrupted as a result of a display of content by the device. According to embodiments of the present invention, a plurality of content segments can be identified or selected. In addition, a device (e.g., computer, cellular telephone, personal digital assistant) associated with a recipient of the content segments can be identified or selected. The content segments can then be provided to the device in such a way that display of a content segment by the device may interrupt operation of the device, thereby providing focus on the content segment.
