    Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for performing data mining and statistical learning techniques on a big data set. More specifically, systems and methods are provided for linear regression using safe screening techniques. Techniques may include receiving a plurality of time series included in a prediction hierarchy for performing statistical learning to develop an improved prediction hierarchy. It may include pre-processing data associated with each of the plurality of time series, wherein the pre-processing includes tasks performed in parallel using a grid-enabled computing environment. For each time series, the system may determine a classification for the individual time series, a pattern group for the individual time series, and a level of the prediction hierarchy at which the each individual time series comprises an need output amount greater than a threshold amount.

    Abstract: A frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW)-based system includes an emitter to transmit at least one linearly modulated wave of radiation to a scene and a receiver to receive a reflection of the transmitted wave from one or multiple objects located at different locations in the scene. The system interferes a copy of the wave outputted by the emitter with the reflection of the transmitted wave received by the receiver to produce a beat signal with spectrum peaks corresponding to reflections from the different locations at the scene. The beat signal is distorted due to the non-linearity of the modulation.

    Abstract: An encoder of a terahertz (THz)-based absolute positioning system used for decoding patterns from THz-band measurements. The encoder includes a scale with a multi-layer reflective/transmissive structure having a matrix with rows. Each row of the matrix corresponds to a plurality of patterns, such that each pattern is used to form a measurement. An emitter emits a THz waveform to the scale. A receiver is used to measure amplitudes of the THz waveform reflected from the scale. A memory stores data including predetermined positions of the emitter based on the patterns of the layers from the scale. Wherein one or more processors can determine a position of the emitter from the measurements of the amplitudes received by the receiver, based on the stored data. An output interface can be used to render the position of the emitter.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for an elevator. The elevator includes an elevator car to move along a first direction. A transmitter for transmitting a signal having a waveform. A receiver for receiving the waveform. A processor having memory is configured to represent the received waveform as a hybrid sinusoidal frequency modulated (FM)-polynomial phase signal (PPS) model. The hybrid sinusoidal FM-PPS model having PPS phase parameters representing a speed of the elevator car along a first direction and a sinusoidal FM phase parameter representing a vibration of the elevator car along a second direction. The processor solves the hybrid sinusoidal FM-PPS model to produce the speed of the elevator car or the vibration of the elevator car or both. A controller controls an operation of the elevator using the speed of the elevator car or the vibration of the elevator car, or both, to assist in an operational management of the elevator.

The multi-dimensional spreading model with statistics on multi-dimensional paths include an angle of departure (AoD), angle of arrival (AoA), and a path spread for the AoD and a path spread for the AoA, propagating in the mmWave channel. Receiving a symbol over the mmWave channel, and decoding the symbol using the CSI, wherein steps of the method are performed by a processor of a receiver.

    Abstract: A photoacoustic catheter includes an elongated catheter body and a housing positioned near a distal end of the elongated catheter body. An ultrasonic transducer, electrically connected to an electrical wire extending along the elongated catheter body, is positioned within the housing. A mirror element is also positioned within the housing and includes a mirror surface beveled at about 45° relative to the longitudinal axis of the multimode fiber. The catheter is operable to deliver an optical wave through the multimode fiber and to deliver an ultrasonic wave collinearly from the housing and out of an aperture of the housing to obtain optical data and ultrasonic data within a mammalian luminal organ.

The processing device can also receive files defining abnormal data-point patterns to be identified in the prediction data. The processing device can identify at least one abnormal data-point pattern in the prediction data by executing customizable program-code in the files. The processing device can determine an override process that corresponds to the at least one abnormal data-point pattern in response to identifying the at least one abnormal data-point pattern in the prediction data. The processing device can execute the override process to generate a corrected version of the prediction data. The processing device can then adjust one or more computer parameters based on the corrected version of the prediction data.

    Abstract: A receiver for use in a wireless communication system to receive signals transmitted over a wireless channel. The receiver includes a plurality of radio-frequency (RF) chains coupled a plurality of antennas. Each RF chain has at least one-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to convert each measurement of an analog signal received by the antenna into at least one bit of information representing a result of a comparison of the measurement with a randomly selected threshold to produce a sequence of bits and a corresponding sequence of thresholds. Each bit in the sequence of bits represents a relative value of the measurement of the analog signal with respect to a threshold from the corresponding sequence of thresholds. A processor coupled to the plurality of RF chains estimates parameters of the wireless channel using the sequences of bits and the corresponding sequences of thresholds received from the plurality of RF chains.

    Abstract: Methods are provided for determining properties of an anisotropic formation (including both fast and slow formations) surrounding a borehole. A logging-while-drilling tool is provided that is moveable through the borehole. The logging-while drilling tool has at least one dipole acoustic source spaced from an array of receivers. During movement of the logging-while-drilling tool, the at least one dipole acoustic source is operated to excite a time-varying pressure field in the anisotropic formation surrounding the borehole. The array of receivers is used to measure waveforms arising from the time-varying pressure field in the anisotropic formation surrounding the borehole. The waveforms are processed to determine a parameter value that represents shear directionality of the anisotropic formation surrounding the borehole.
