  • Publication number: 20130179608
Abstract: An efficient low latency buffer, and method of operation, is described. The efficient low latency buffer may be used as a bi-directional memory buffer in an audio playback device to buffer both output and input data. An application processor coupled to the bi-directional memory buffer is responsive to an indication to write data to the bi-directional memory buffer reads a defined size of input data from the bi-directional memory buffer. The input data read from the bi-directional memory buffer is replaced with output data of the defined size. In response to a mode-change signal, the defined size of data is changed that is read and written from and to the bi-directional memory buffer. The buffer may allow the application processor to enter a low-powered sleep mode more frequently.

  • Publication number: 20130178209
Abstract: A method for improved system selection by wireless mobile devices in 3GPP networks is provided. Location data is retrieved by the wireless device to estimate an initial system on which the wireless mobile device will attempt initialization. Using the location data, an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) associated with the location data is determined from an ARFCN table stored in memory in the wireless mobile device. The wireless mobile device can then perform system selection using the determined ARFCN. A server generates and maintains the ARFCN table which is initially provided to the wireless mobile device at manufacturer, during provisioning or as an over-the-air update.

  • Publication number: 20130179522
Abstract: To perform thread-based message prioritization, metadata may be extracted from a received electronic message. Based on the extracted message metadata and accumulated metadata extracted from previously received messages, a message thread to which the received electronic message belongs may be identified. Based on a set of thread priority assessment criteria, a priority level for the message thread may be determined. At least part of the message thread may be processed according to the priority level. The processing may be altering a notification behavior of an electronic messaging client for electronic messages of the message thread. Thread priority assessment may be based on user-configurable criteria that may be set via a graphical user interface. Message thread identification may also be based on user-configurable criteria that may be set via a graphical user interface.

  • Publication number: 20130170456
Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for managing random access data channels in a wirelessly-enabled communications environment. An uplink (UL) random access (RA) channel is implemented to send data to an access point (AP) without requiring a UL allocation grant message to be sent on the downlink (DL) for UL timing adjustments. A mobile station (MS) sends a chosen sequence to the AP to indicate that a RA data transmission is being requested. The location and number of radio resources that are used for the UL RA data transmission are determined by the choice of a RA sequence initially sent by the MS. If UL timing has not been established, the AP is able to determine the timing of the UL RA data transmissions by deriving the offset of the initial RA request sequence transmission from the MS.

  • Publication number: 20130170419
Abstract: A system and method of reducing the WLAN power consumption and limiting battery drain of a mobile communications device is provided. The mechanism continuously monitors for changes in the WLAN and cellular signal strength and modifies the WLAN profile scanning activity accordingly. By monitoring for changes, transitions can be detected which indicate the location of the mobile device (i.e., indoor or outdoor). An increase in cellular signal strength and a decrease in WLAN signal strength indicates the user is transitioning outdoors where WLAN coverage may be limited. To reduce battery power consumption, background scanning is suspended or its frequency significantly lowered. Moving indoors is indicated by a decrease in cellular signal strength and an increase in WLAN signal strength. Background/Connectivity scanning frequency is increased to provide shorter time-to-connect to WLAN Networks for the user within the WLAN coverage area.

  • Publication number: 20130174096
Abstract: A control circuit operably couples to a display and presents on that display a plurality of user-selectable icons for corresponding applications by highlighting at least one of the user-selectable icons as a function, at least in part, of a speed by which the corresponding application can be made user ready. By one approach the aforementioned speed is assessed by determining whether a given application is at least one of pre-cached and pre-loaded and hence available to deploy in a reduced amount of time as compared to applications that are not pre-cached and/or pre-loaded.
