  • Patent number: 9630273
Abstract: Systems and methods can be provided to use an automated cutting system to identify an edge or multiple edges of a workpiece. An automated cutting system receives trace data for a test path to be traced over a workpiece. The automated cutting system includes a torch from which gas is flowed. The torch is controlled in accordance with the trace data to trace the test path over the workpiece. A set of back pressure values are obtained by monitoring a back pressure of the gas during the tracing of the path. The back pressure values are mapped to a set of coordinates. An edge of the workpiece is identified using the set of back pressure values and the set of coordinates.

  • Publication number: 20170026372
Abstract: Techniques are described for a proxy system to provide a client device with transparent access to multiple network file servers. The proxy system may appear to the client device as a single network file server. The proxy may be configured to forward requests received from the client device to multiple servers as well as provide responses from the server back to the client. Further, the proxy system may authenticate itself, as the client, to each of the multiple network servers using authentication credentials supplied by the client. After prompting a user to submit credentials to establish a session with a first network server, the proxy system may send a session timeout error code, prompting the client to submit a fresh authentication request used by the proxy system to establish a session with a second network server.

  • Patent number: 9548681
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating electricity by electromagnetic induction, using a magnetic field modulated by the formation, dissipation, and movement of vortices produced by a vortex material such as a type II superconductor. Magnetic field modulation occurs at the microscopic level, facilitating the production of high frequency electric power. Generator inductors are manufactured using microelectronic fabrication, in at least one dimension corresponding to the spacing of vortices. The vortex material fabrication method establishes the alignment of vortices and generator coils, permitting the electromagnetic induction of energy from many vortices into many coils simultaneously as a cumulative output of electricity. A thermoelectric cycle is used to convert heat energy into electricity.

  • Publication number: 20160375648
Abstract: A structural insert according to the present invention can be utilized in a Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) structure such as an armor structure having one or more material layers with each material layer having at least one structural insert arranged along a common surface. Utilizing a polygonal or HoneyComb Core, a reinforcement material containing a fraction of high volume hollow microspheres with interior voids can be utilized and placed within the inserts cellular structure to decrease the weight of the armor system. Subsequent to metal infiltration, the metal encapsulates the micro-spheres within the cells of the cellular structure, forming pockets of micro-spheres therein. These encapsulated hollow microspheres comprise a ceramic or glass wall around an interior void having a wall thickness that reinforces the void wall surface. The encapsulating metal further bonds to the walls of the cellular structure increasing the crush strength of the cell wall.

Abstract: A composite knife made from layers of Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) is disclosed. It includes a middle layer of fibrous preform including a hard insert placed longitudinally at its periphery. The hard insert, after sharpening, represents the cutting blade portion of the composite knife. The composite knife further includes a carrier which forms the load bearing member of the cutting blade, as well as forming the integral handle of the composite knife. The carrier portion of the composite knife includes at least one top and at least one bottom layers of fibrous preform, sandwiching the middle layer that contains the cutting edge portion of the knife. A metallic material is infiltrated within the fibrous preforms and extends throughout the composite blade structure forming the MMC knife, the metallic material bonding the middle layer within the carrier, and bonding the top and bottom surface of the hard insert within the carrier.

  • Patent number: 9186723
Abstract: A method of producing a Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) with uniform surface layers is disclosed. First, a low volume fraction compressible discontinuous ceramic fiber paper is set on the base of a mold cavity. Next, an array of reinforcement preform(s) (1×1, 2×2, 4×4, 2×8, etc) are set in the mold on top of the ceramic fiber paper. A top layer of ceramic fiber paper is next placed on the array of reinforcement preforms and the mold cover seals the mold. The reinforcement porous preform(s) are held to the center of the mold cavity when the sealed mold compresses the top and bottom layers of ceramic fiber paper. The ceramic fiber paper exerts an equal and opposite force on the reinforcement preform(s) within the closed mold centering the preform(s) within the mold cavity. The mold cavity is next infiltrated under pressure with molten metal allowing for metal to penetrate into any open porosity of the ceramic fiber paper, reinforcement preform(s), and areas within the mold cavity that contain open spaces.
