  • Publication number: 20140350722
Abstract: Modular components form a robotic assembly. the mod-components include modules and tools, each have a set of functions and capabilities, are rapidly configured-reconfigured to function cooperatively, creating a configurable robotic assemblage. Each mod-component incorporates a standardized connector mating with any other standardized connector in an interchangeable manner providing mechanical stability, power, and signals therebetween. Each mod-component incorporates a processor, data storage for mod-component identity, status, and programmable functionality, and for responding to commands. Storage is reprogrammed while the robot is operational, altering both commands and responses. After interconnection, inter-module power and communication are established and each modular component identifies itself and its functionality, thereby providing “plug and play” configuration.

  • Patent number: 8874929
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide methods and systems for cross domain discovery. According to the disclosure, an object can include multiple entities defined by an originator. The multiple entities have different scopes corresponding to different access restrictions. Further, the originator defines keywords for each of the multiple entities. A system for cross domain discovery stores the multiple entities in an object service component, and stores the keywords and access restrictions in a search service component. The search service component conducts a search based on the keywords and access restrictions in response to a search request from a user. An entity is provided to the user based on the user's credential and the searching.

  • Patent number: 8805579
Abstract: A configurable robotic apparatus and system is disclosed that is remotely operable in difficult, hazardous, subterranean, or submerged environs. The apparatus merges diverse disciplines to effect inspecting, cleaning, treating, repairing or otherwise maintaining a wide variety of materials and conditions. Deployment environments include power, municipal water and wastewater plants, surface and submerged infrastructures (pipes, lines, conduits), and like industrial applications. Extensible and articulating modules, configurable through standardized and interchangeable connectors, provide unique flexibility, scalability and versatility to accommodate a wide range of shapes, surfaces, and obstacles. In-module intelligence and instrumentation eliminates the need for constant manual control through autonomous operation capable of simultaneous optimization and synchronization of multiple work processes, but manual override and remote control is provided to overcome unanticipated limitations.

  • Patent number: 8746793
Abstract: Child safety seats are used for the safe transport of children in vehicles. The child safety seats known from prior art often offer only insufficient protection in the case of a side impact. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a child safety seat that improves the protective effect of the child safety seat in the case of a side impact. This object is solved by a child safety seat with side impact protection according to the invention. Such a child safety seat comprises at least one element absorbing and/or transmitting energy which is arranged and designed to be transferred from a rest position to a functioning position to absorb a laterally impacting energy in the functioning position.

  • Patent number: 8749642
Abstract: The invention concerns correcting an error in an estimated pose of a moveable camera. The camera is at least a part of a camera system that generates an output image on the basis of the camera pose. Incremental pose measurements for the camera are taken over time and a pose of the camera using the incremental pose measurements is estimated, the estimated camera pose having an error. A pose correction is determined on the basis of the difference between an absolute pose measurement for the camera and the estimated camera pose. A rate of change in the camera image caused by a change in the camera is monitored. A parameter of the camera system is periodically adjusted based on the incremental pose measurements. The adjustment is further set in order to effect the pose correction so as to correct for the estimated camera pose error and the pose correction is effected at a rate based on the monitored rate of change in the camera image.

  • Patent number: 8744741
Abstract: A Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) apparatus and method are disclosed having a rotatable light source enabled to emit a light ray, the light ray being emitted at a plurality of angular intervals; a reflection device, which can be parabolic in shape, and an analysis device for calculating a position at which one or more features are present based on the angle that the light ray was emitted and the time delay associated with the received reflected light, from a feature, wherein the analysis device takes into account the reflection of the light ray from the reflection device. In this manner, light rays may be reflected from heading in one direction to improve the resolution of the LIDAR in a second direction. Furthermore, where a parabolic reflector is used, positions of features can be calculated directly in a Cartesian coordinate system. Autonomous vehicles can use a LIDAR such as described herein to improve forward looking resolution in collision avoidance systems or terrain selection systems.
