  • Patent number: 7395445
Abstract: A state machine implemented controller is provided in which a logic core 20 is reconfigurable in response to state data held within a memory 22. Thus, on transition from one state to a next state the data held within the memory 22 is used to reconfigure the operation of the logic core 20. This enables a relatively compact logic core 20 to be used time and time again, thereby avoiding the need to individually define a logic core appropriate to each individual one of the states that the state machine can enter into. This results in a controller which is much more compact on an integrated circuit die than is the case with prior art controllers.

  • Patent number: 6633621
Abstract: A system for synchronizing a clock includes a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit that generates or receives (304) timing errors that are based on timing information from multiple timing sources. Gain blocks (214) weight (306) the timing errors, which are then combined (308) into a loop time error. A loop integrator (226) integrates (310) the loop time error to produce an input used to adjust (312) an oscillator frequency. A corresponding oscillator clock signal is fed back (240) to one or more phase detectors (206), which receive (302) timing reference signals and generate timing errors. When a timing errors indicates that a problem exists with a timing source, the impact of the problematic timing source is reduced (430, 504), or oscillator frequency adjustments are suspended (608). When used on a satellite (700), at least one of the timing errors can be based on times of transmit and times of arrival of time messages exchanged between the satellite and its neighbors (716).

  • Patent number: 6611537
Abstract: A network adapter for a synchronous logical ring network operates on existing physical twisted-pair telephone topologies. Information propagates around the logical ring, reaching every device on each revolution around the network. Network devices are full-duplex, transmitting and receiving information on every clock cycle. Network devices arbitrate to be elected the network clock device. By synchronizing all network devices to a single reference clock, and providing fixed frames of information propagating around the network at consistent time intervals, the logical ring network ensures that information propagates from one device to another at consistent time intervals. The fixed-length frames are divided into two independent streams: a data stream for the distribution of real-time continuous digital media streams; and a system command stream for the distribution of system commands.

  • Patent number: 6535801
Abstract: A method of determining the position of a satellite in a near geosynchronous orbit includes receiving at least one main lobe signal from an antenna on a first GPS satellite. A GPS signal, including GPS time and Doppler, is received from a pseudolite positioned on the Earth and an approximate position of each of a plurality of second GPS satellites is determined from an onboard almanac. Side lobe signals and accompanying noise are received from antennas on the plurality of second GPS satellites. The GPS signal and known sequential data bits are used for sorting or integrating the side lobe signals from the accompanying noise and the position of the satellite in a near geosynchronous orbit is determined using the one or more main lobe signals and the sorted side lobe signals.

  • Patent number: 6435278
Abstract: A latching system permits a firing head to be lowered into a wellbore and reliably coupled to a perforating gun previously lowered into the wellbore. In a disclosed embodiment thereof, the latching system includes a tubular collar associated with the firing head, and a stinger associated with the perforating gun. As the firing head approaches the previously lowered perforating gun, shearable studs projecting into the interior of the collar are received in external side surface J-slots formed on the stinger. The latching of the collar studs in the stinger J-slots permits the firing head/perforating gun connection to be verified simply by pulling up on and creating increased tension in the structure, such as a slick line, used to lower the firing head to the perforating gun. After the firing head is used to detonate the perforating gun, the spent firing head may be retrieved by pulling it uphole with sufficient force to shear its collar studs.

  • Patent number: 6134484
Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining the integrity of spacecraft based time and position using GPS (11) is disclosed. A GPS receiver is provided with a Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitor (RAIM) processor (12) and a Kalman filter (14). GPS signals are received from at least four GPS satellites and processed in the GPS receiver to provide time and position information. Periodically, an extended fault vector is formed in the Kalman filter with propagated open-loop position and velocity measurements. The extended fault vector is used to isolate and remove failing GPS satellites.

  • Patent number: 6031350
Abstract: A position control and monitoring circuitry is provided for an electric motor having a plurality of coils and a movable element. A drive circuit generates a square wave drive signal of variable mark/space ratio to drive the coils to position the movable element. A monitoring circuit modulates square wave transitions at a sub-harmnonic of the drive signal frequency and generates a monitoring signal for injection into the coils. A sensor senses the monitoring signal from the coils to determine the position of the movable element. A difference circuit drives the drive circuit with a difference between an input signal and an output signal of the sensor.
