  • Publication number: 20040209260
Abstract: Rapid and definitive bioagent detection and identification can be carried out without nucleic acid sequencing. Analysis of a variety of bioagents and samples, such as air, fluid, and body samples, can be carried out to provide information useful for industrial, medical, and environmental purposes. Nucleic acid samples of unknown or suspected bioagents may be collected, optimal primer pairs may be selected, and the nucleic acid may be amplified. Expected mass spectra signal models may be generated and selected, the actual mass spectra of the amplicons may be obtained. The expected mass spectra most closely correlating with the actual mass spectra may be determined using a joint maximum likelihood analysis, and base counts for the actual mass spectra and the expected mass spectra may be obtained. The most likely candidate bioagents may then be determined.

  • Publication number: 20040206027
Abstract: A device for setting and leveling tile is provided that comprises an elongated straight edge. The straight edge includes a horizontal tile support flange and a vertical flange. A support leg is adjustably attached to the vertical flange adjacent each end of the straight edge and a bubble level is centered on the vertical flange between the support legs. The thickness of the horizontal support flange is sized so that after all the courses of tile are laid and the straight edge is removed, only a layer of grout is required to complete the installation. If the floor is not level, the support legs are adjusted to center the bubble in the level prior to laying the tiles. When leveling tile around a bathtub, an adjustable brace is affixed onto each of the support legs. Each brace includes and adjustment slot therethrough and a rubber boot secured on one end for engaging the bottom of the tub for supporting the straight edge on the edge of the tub.

  • Publication number: 20040206895
Abstract: A position sensor for determining the angular position of a steering wheel. The shaft of the steering wheel is connected to a code disk and turn ring of the sensor so that when steering wheel is rotated, the coded disk and turn ring are also rotated. The code disk is a flat circular disk having a series of cut-outs or bits around its perimeter. A light emitting diode shines a light through the cut-outs and is read by a photo detector which determines the angular position of the code disk. The turn ring is fitted on the outside of the code disk and rotates in a hypocycloidic circle so that for every full revolution of the code disk, the turn ring rotates through a smaller angle. The turn ring is placed over a series of Hall sensors to determine the number of revolutions of the code disk.

  • Publication number: 20040210444
Abstract: A method and system for translating written text from a first (foreign) language to a second (native) language is provided. An image containing the text is first captured at the request of the user. Text zones are identified in the image and the zones are converted to text characters using optical character recognition. The text characters, which are in the first language, are translated to the second language. The translated text is then output to the user. The text may be converted to an image that can be displayed on a display or, alternatively, the text may be synthesized into speech that may be played over a speaker accessible to the user such as an earpiece. Data can be provided to the user as text, audio or text and audio combined.

  • Publication number: 20040210443
Abstract: The system assesses a measure of quality associated with the user's query, which may be based on the query itself or upon the results returned from a first search space. If the measure of quality is low, the system accesses one or more second knowledge sources and retrieves intermediate results that belong to the vocabulary of the first search space. A second query is then constructed using the intermediate results, and based on further input from the user as needed. The second query is then used to search the first search space with results returned to the user.

  • Publication number: 20040206342
Abstract: An EGR cooler comprises a cooling core having a plurality of passages for accommodating the flow of exhaust gas therethrough, an exhaust gas inlet chamber connected to the cooling core, for receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and passing the exhaust gas to the cooling core, and an exhaust gas outlet chamber separate from the exhaust gas inlet chamber and connected to the cooling core for receiving exhaust gas from the core. The cooler further includes means for permitting the controlled passage of exhaust gas from the exhaust gas inlet chamber to the exhaust gas outlet chamber without passing through the cooling core, said means being positioned upstream from the exhaust gas outlet chamber. Configured in this manner, the EGR cooler permits the mixing of cooled exhaust gas with uncooled exhaust to provide a desired exiting gas temperature that is below an exhaust gas dew point.

  • Publication number: 20040206873
Abstract: An adapter that holds and stabilizes a fast food container in a standard cylindrical automobile cup holder to prevent spilling of its contents. A typical fast food container would be one that holds French fried potatoes. It has a lower rigid cylindrical member and two flexible upper members that are mechanically biased to return to their original position when they are not holding the container. The lower member fits into the automobile cup holder, and the flexible members hold a larger sized container temporarily in a fixed position. The adapter permits the larger sized container to be conveniently inserted and removed.
