  • Patent number: 8213774
Abstract: Spotlighting and other special effects are applied by processing circuitry in real time to received video streams. Effects tracking may be applied to fixed regions or moving regions or objects of interest. Viewers interact via conventional remote controls and other user interfaces to set effect parameters. Other special effects employed include zooming, masking, etc. and can be used to enhance one or more spotlight effects. Televisions, set top boxes and media players house the underlying circuitry. Effects are applied to layered and non-layered video streams to form layered and combined video stream output. Video outputs also deliver effect parameters such as region of interest location along with a video stream. Such effect parameters assist in the downstream application of dynamic effects.

  • Patent number: 8176271
Abstract: Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to backup up data. In aspects, a backup target determines a degree to which a data set included on the backup target is not backed up on a backup facility. The degree can represent more than just that the data set is completely backed up or is not backed up at all. If the degree satisfies a condition, the backup target utilizes information derived from a backup history of one or more attempted or successfully completed backup sessions between the backup target and the backup facility to determine whether to provide a notification regarding backup state. The backup target also may send the degree and other backup information to a backup facility which may use this information in determining a backup scheme to employ with the backup target.

  • Patent number: 8121276
Abstract: A multicast call processing unit receives a request from a requester, determines if the request is associated with a multicast function, identifies a plurality of destinations defined by the multicast function and establishes communication link between the requester and the plurality of destinations. In one embodiment, the call processing unit authenticates the plurality of destinations before establishing a communication link between them and the requester. If the request from the requester is not associated with the multicast function, then the call processing unit establishes a communication link between the requester and a single destination. In another embodiment, a supervisor manages the plurality of destinations.

  • Publication number: 20110270989
Abstract: A method and apparatus for intelligent caching is provided. A thin layer of business logic on a web server receives URL requests sent to the web server from clients and resolves the URLs into URLs corresponding to component parts of the requested document according to the rules of a rule set. Thus only the component resources of a composite document are cached in the web server's caching layer. The rule set defines a format for the requests sent to the web server, the manner in which properly formatted requests should be resolved, and the manner in which the component resources should be assembled into the composite document.

  • Publication number: 20110208867
Abstract: A method is disclosed for performing message payload processing functions in a network element on behalf of an application. According to one aspect, a network element intercepts data packets comprising network layer or transport layer headers having an address of a destination which destination differs from the network element. The network element determines whether information contained in layer 2-4 headers of the data packet satisfies specified criteria. If the information satisfies the specified criteria, the network element directs the data packets to a blade of the network element that performs processing based on an application layer message at least partially contained in the data packets. If the information does not satisfy the specified criteria, the network element forwards the data packets towards the destination without sending them to the blade.

  • Publication number: 20110179703
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for conversion of biomass to biochar in subcritical water at 230-350° C. and 500-3000 psi. Under subcritical water conditions, biomass readily converts into biochar, biocrude, and some gases. In this invention, yield of biochar is significantly improved by recycling of biocrude. The process can produce hydrophobic biochar that has at least 70 wt % (dry basis) carbon as opposed to ˜25 wt % carbon in hydrophilic biomass, and has a heating value of about 29 MJ/kg (HHV-dry basis) which is comparable to good quality coals. More than 90% energy of biomass is retained in the biochar. The invention provides an effective means to convert biomass into a high energy density fuel for use in a variety of applications.

  • Patent number: 7987272
Abstract: A method is disclosed for performing message payload processing functions in a network element on behalf of an application. According to one aspect, a network element receives user-specified input that indicates a particular message classification. The network element also receives one or more data packets. Based on the data packets, the network element determines that an application layer message, which is collectively contained in payload portions of the data packets, matches the particular message classification. The network element processes at least a portion of the message by performing, on behalf of the application to which the message is directed, and relative to at least the portion of the message, one or more actions that are (a) specified in the user-specified input and (b) associated with the particular message classification.
