Abstract: A method of integrating handover technology at a data link layer level with handover technology at a network layer level, and an apparatus. The method includes sending a first management message, which requests that a handover at a data link layer level be performed, to a serving base station, receiving a second management message, which includes information on a predetermined number of recommended neighboring base stations, in response to the first management message from the serving base station, selecting one of the neighboring base stations as a target base station, sending a third management message to the serving base station, which requests that a connection between the mobile station and the serving base station be released after a period of waiting time, and performing a high-speed handover procedure at a network layer level between the mobile station and the serving base station during the period of waiting time.

Abstract: An apparatus and method relates to transmission of media independent (MIH) handover protocol information, the access point includes a wired interface module to receive, through a wired network, indication information indicating whether an access point that manages a neighboring heterogeneous subnet supports a protocol to conduct a media independent handover (MIH), a storage module to store the received indication information, a frame generating module to generate a frame including the stored indication information, and a wireless interface module to transmit the generated frame to a mobile node.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method to perform a fast handover that is capable of determining whether to switch an internet protocol (IP) using a received, unique code of an access router when a mobile node performs a fast handover in a wireless network. The apparatus to perform a fast handover includes a signal receiving unit to receive a signal, a subnet change determining unit to determine if a subnet change has occurred by referring to an access router identification (ID) included in the received signal, a trigger unit to perform a layer trigger depending upon the determination result as to whether a subnet change has occurred, and a handover performing unit to perform a handover according to the layer trigger.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus of performing a fast handover in a wireless network are provided. The network device includes: a packet generating unit to generate a router solicitation (RS) message including fast handover instruction information, when the network device participates in a new subnet; a packet sending unit to send the generated router solicitation message to a router within the subnet; a packet receiving unit to receive a router advertisement message including handover information necessary to generate an address from the router according to the fast handover instruction information; and a determination unit to generate the address required by the subnet using the handover information.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method to perform a fast handover, capable of determining whether to change an internet protocol (IP) using an identification (ID) of an access router included in media independent information service (MIIS) information when a mobile node performs a fast handover in a heterogeneous wireless network. The apparatus to perform fast handovers includes: a signal-receiving unit to receive an MIIS signal; a subnet-change-determining unit to determine whether to perform a change of the subnet by referring to an access router ID included in the received MIIS signal; a trigger unit to perform a layer trigger depending upon the determination result of whether to perform a change of the subnet; and a handover performing unit to perform a handover according to the performed layer trigger.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus to handover a mobile node between heterogeneous networks using a mobile internet protocol (IP) is provided. The method includes: connecting a mobile node to a movement destination network; obtaining information regarding, or about, the movement destination network; generating a message including the information regarding the movement destination network; and transmitting the generated message to a correspondent node that transmits continuous data to the mobile node.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method to display the availability of a wireless LAN, in which information about an area supporting a wireless local area network (LAN) is provided to a user carrying a mobile terminal, such as a mobile phone through a mobile phone network in the form of text, voice or images. The apparatus includes: an input unit to receive a command to request a search for a wireless LAN available in a designated location from a user; a packet generating unit to generate an information request packet according to the received command; a communicating unit to transmit the generated information request packet and to receive a result of the requested search for the available wireless LAN, in response to the transmitted information request packet; and a display unit to display the received result of the search.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for securing media access control (MAC) addresses in a wireless local area network (LAN) environment are provided. In the method of securing MAC addresses, a cryptographically generated address (CGA) is generated using a predetermined cipher algorithm, a ciphered MAC address is extracted from the CGA, and communication is performed using the ciphered MAC address. Accordingly, it is possible to strengthen the security of MAC addresses.

Abstract: A method and system establish a bi-directional tunnel through direct communication between a tunnel end point (TEP) and a user node without user assistance. The method includes: operating the user node in order to establish the bi-directional tunnel, wherein operating the user node includes: requesting network information necessary for establishing the bi-directional tunnel to the DHCP server; when the user node receives the network information from the DHCP server, establishing a unidirectional tunnel from the user node to the TEP based on the received network information; requesting one of the TEPs to establish the unidirectional tunnel; and when the user node receives a router advertisement (RA) message of a second network with which the user node wishes to communicate from the TEP required to establish the unidirectional tunnel, establishing an address of the user node in the second network.

Abstract: An apparatus for and method of acquiring an address in a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) environment in a wireless LAN. The method includes: sensing that a mobile node has moved from a first network to a second network; transmitting a frame requesting association with the second network to an access point managing the second network after sensing that the mobile node has moved from the first network to the second network; and receiving a message containing an address assigned to the mobile node from the access point having received the transmitted frame. Accordingly, the mobile node can promptly acquire an IP address without an additional request.

Therefore, the MN can predict whether it moves to a new network, thereby performing a fast handover.

Abstract: A fast handover apparatus, method, and medium for performing a fast handover in a wireless LAN environment. The fast handover method includes (a) determining whether a beacon signal input from an access point (AP) to a mobile node (MN) contains border information indicating that the AP is located at the border of its subnet, the AP connecting the MN to a wired network; and (b) selectively performing a handover between subnets based on the determination results obtained in (a). Accordingly, unnecessary communications between an MN and an AR are prevented by providing predetermined information, based on which the MN can determine whether to perform only an L2 handover or both the L2 handover and an L3 handover.

Abstract: A method, medium, and apparatus for assuring duplicate address detection. The method includes: determining whether a predetermined packet is related to a duplicate address detection, and if the packet is determined to be related to the duplicate address detection, modifying a source address of the predetermined packet to another predetermined address different from the source address. Proper duplicate address detection can be assured even in an environment where multicast packet filtering is based on a link layer source address that follows the IEEE 802.11 standard.

Abstract: A tunneling service method and system enabling data communication between different networks, in which an address of a tunneling service server used in a client node can be easily designated, the tunneling service method includes: transmitting an information request message, which requests information required for connection to the network, to a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server selected by the client node; receiving an acknowledgement message, which contains an address of the tunnel router, from the DHCP server selected by the client node; and the client node detecting the address of the tunnel router contained in the acknowledgement message and generating a packet for a tunneling service using the detected address of the tunnel router.

A method of setting an address of a tunnel router in a user node includes: transmitting a message requesting at least one tunnel router address to a tunnel service support server; receiving a message including at least one tunnel router address from the tunnel service support server; and storing the tunnel router address included in the received message. According to the system and method, the address of a tunnel router providing a tunnel service to a user node can be more easily set, and even when the address of the tunnel router changes or a new tunnel router is added, the address of the tunnel router can be easily set without the user manually changing the address of the tunnel router.

Abstract: An apparatus, method, and medium for connection to a link layer and a network layer of a wireless LAN. The link/network layer access method may include transmitting a request message requesting information for connecting a mobile node and the network layer of a wireless LAN before connection of the mobile node and the link layer of the wireless LAN is completed, and completing connection to the network layer by using information included in a response message, transmitted in response to the transmitted request message. Accordingly, by concurrently processing the process for connecting to the link layer and to the network layer of the wireless LAN, a high speed handover in the wireless LAN can be achieved.
