Publication number: 20050112433Abstract: An improved fuel cell is described. The invention addresses the problem of mechanical failure in thin electrolytes. One embodiment varies the thickness of the electrolyte and positions at least either the anode or cathode in the recessed region to provide a short travel distance for ions traveling from the anode to the cathode or from the cathode to the anode. A second embodiment uses a uniquely shaped manifold cover to allow close positioning of the anode to the cathode. Using the described structures results in a substantial improvement in fuel cell reliability and performance.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 24, 2003Publication date: May 26, 2005Inventors: Raj Apte, David Duff, Christian Van de Walle, Jeng Lu, Alberto Salleo, Stephen White

Publication number: 20050096747Abstract: A knee prosthetic including a tibial component defining medial and lateral concavities shaped to receive medial and lateral femoral condyles of the femur. The concavities have first portions for contact with the condyles during normal knee flexion and second portions for contact with the condyles during deep, or high, knee flexion. The medial concavity can include a conforming boundary that encompasses at least the first and second portions, wherein an area inside the conforming boundary has a generally flat surface. The flat surface allows the medial femoral condyle to slide and rotate posteriorly during high knee flexion. The conforming boundary can have a generally triangular shape with an apex extending anteriorly and a relatively wider base extending posteriorly, wherein the apex includes the first portion and the base includes the second portion. The relatively wider base portion advantageously allows additional area for posteriorly directed articulating contact during high knee flexion.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2003Publication date: May 5, 2005Inventors: David Tuttle, Vernon Hartdegen, Stephen White, Robert Fencl, Robert Schmidt

Publication number: 20050066426Abstract: The present invention comprises a shaped piece of hard or pliable material which is attached to the outside of a garment at the back of the shoulder by a plurality of suitable means. The present invention is positioned such that when carrying a load, and utilizing a shoulder strap to do so, a person can place the strap on the shoulder between the neck and the apparatus, adjacent to the apparatus, in order to secure the strap and load from slipping off the shoulder. The apparatus can have an aesthetic quality while offering the function of passively fixing a shoulder-strap from sliding laterally away from the wearer's neck.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2004Publication date: March 31, 2005Inventor: Stephen White

Publication number: 20050056551Abstract: An analyte is determined electrochemically indirectly. In a first step an oxidase and an oxidisable substrate, one of which is the analyte or derived therefrom, interact and generate hydrogen peroxide. In a second step a peroxidase (especially horse-radish peroxidase) reduces the hydrogen peroxide and concomitantly oxidises a mediator, preferably 2,2?-azino-bis(3-ethyl=benzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid, ABTS) to an oxidised form (ABTSOX). The oxidised mediator is then reduced at an electrode and the consequent current is measured. A preferred sensor format uses a carbon electrode screen-printed onto a substrate and overlaid with one or more layers containing the enzymes and other components.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2002Publication date: March 17, 2005Inventors: Stephen White, John Bolbot

Patent number: 6680048Abstract: Cellobiose esters and particularly &agr; cellobiose octanonanoate has been found able to structure water-immiscible liquids well, and in particular can produce clear structured emulsions. However, such emulsions tend to lose clarity or structural strength during storage. Deviating from &agr;-cellobiose octanonanoate can result in impaired clarity and/or impaired hardness of emulsion sticks. However, acylated cellobiose which contains acyl substituents of formula —O—CO—R in which R represents an n-octyl residue and the percentage Y of the nonanoate acyl substituent —O—CO—R at the anomeric carbon is at least 60% and the percentage A of &agr; anomer is greater than the anomer and not higher than A=74.5 +0.2Y when Y is up to 92% and not higher than A=161−0.74Y when Y is greater than 92% offers the production of sticks combining structurant stability with product clarity and hardness.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2001Date of Patent: January 20, 2004Assignee: Unilever Home & Personal Care USA, a division of Conopco, Inc.Inventors: Lynda Grainger, Kathryn Elizabeth Gransden, Andrew Hopkinson, Adam Jan Kowalski, Nicholas Webb, Michael Stephen White

Publication number: 20030028796Abstract: Multiple information is extracted from an unknown recording and information associated therewith. Associated information includes the filename, if the recording is a computer file in, e.g., MP3 format, or table of contents (TOC) data, if the recording is on a removable medium, such as a compact disc. At least one and preferably several algorithmically determined fingerprints are extracted from the recording using one or more fingerprint extraction methods. The information extracted is compared with corresponding information in a database maintained for reference recordings. Identification starts with the most accurate and efficient method available, e.g., using a hash ID, a unique ID or text. Fingerprint matching is used to confirm other matches and validation is performed by comparing the duration of the unknown and a possibly matching reference recording.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2002Publication date: February 6, 2003Applicant: Gracenote, Inc.Inventors: Dale T.
