  • Publication number: 20030013241
Abstract: High quality epitaxial layers of monocrystalline materials can be grown overlying monocrystalline substrates such as large silicon wafers by forming a compliant substrate for growing the monocrystalline layers. An accommodating buffer layer comprises a layer of monocrystalline oxide spaced apart from a silicon wafer by an amorphous interface layer of silicon oxide. The amorphous interface layer dissipates strain and permits the growth of a high quality monocrystalline oxide accommodating buffer layer. The accommodating buffer layer is lattice matched to both the underlying silicon wafer and the overlying monocrystalline material layer. Any lattice mismatch between the accommodating buffer layer and the underlying silicon substrate is taken care of by the amorphous interface layer. In addition, formation of a compliant substrate may include utilizing surfactant enhanced epitaxy, epitaxial growth of single crystal silicon onto single crystal oxide, and epitaxial growth of Zintl phase materials.

  • Publication number: 20030004004
Abstract: A golf ball placement device including a housing, a golf ball container, a actuator which can be actuated to place a golf ball, a tube which can hold a golf ball at its vertical position and place the golf ball at a particular position after being rotated to a horizontal position, and a transmission linkage that links the motion of the actuator to the pivotal motion of the tube is disclosed. The transmission linkage is properly balanced using springs and/or weights so that only a minimum force is needed to actuate the actuator in order to place a golf ball. The device may further include a tee height adjuster to adjust the extent of the rotation of tube to enable the device to dispense a golf ball at a proper height. The device may further optionally include a cover and a place to hold an advertisement. The device may be further made into an ultra portable model by adding a side cover which can be partially flipped open to serve as a golf practice tee.

  • Patent number: 6448724
Abstract: A brushless DC motor modifies motor commutation events to reduce noise by providing overlapping activation of the switch being deactivated with the switch being newly activated so that three switches are temporarily activated. The newly activated switch is pulse width modulated with a motor torque controlling duty cycle, and the switch being deactivated is pulse width modulated synchronously with the newly activated switch but with a duty cycle decreasing from the torque controlling duty cycle. The decreasing modulation of the switch being deactivated allows a slower current decrease in the phase turning off to reduce or eliminate the disturbances, and thus the noise. The decreasing modulation is preferably exponential in manner, with a time constant varying inversely with motor speed so that the duty cycle reaches a predetermined minimum in a predetermined maximum number of motor electrical degrees.

  • Publication number: 20020120694
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and systems for efficient and effective distribution of system management messages between customer and service provider sites. The invention ensures inter-site messages are appropriately routed according to information within the message in a flexible manner based on system conditions and configuration. The invention also adapts to system dynamic changes such as inter-site communication link interruption or congestion and provides seamless automated information technologies operations during these system dynamic changes. Automated management services are only postponed until such communication link can be restored. Two embodiments are provided to illustrate the invention. In one embodiment, system management resides at the service provider site with local system management backup at the customer site. In a second embodiment, system management resides at both the service provider site and customer site.
