  • Patent number: 8291849
Abstract: A floating vessel is equipped with perforated plates which exhibit both an added-mass effect and a damping effect. The addition of porosity to an added mass plate phase-shifts the added mass force so that it becomes at least partially a damping force which does not depend on large velocities to develop a large damping force. Preferred porosity is in the range of about 5% to about 15% of total plate area. A semi-submersible drilling rig may have damper plates fitted between its surface-piercing columns and/or extending from the sides of its pontoons. A truss spar offshore platform may have damper plates installed within its truss structure intermediate its hull and ballast tank. Drill ships and similar vessels may be equipped with damper plates extending from the sides of their hulls to reduce both heave and roll. In certain embodiments, the damper plates are retractable so as not to interfere with docking and to reduce drag while the vessel is underway.

  • Publication number: 20120234340
Abstract: A system and method for formulation of a personalized permanent hair color product. The system and method are used to produce on-site at the salon or home, a permanent, semi permanent and/or stained hair color custom mixed to according to features and individual parameters for each person, based upon an assessment test completed by the individual or a professional, based upon the person's “map” and characteristics. The person is then able to choose the quadrant of color (i.e. light blonde, blonde, red, brown, dark brown), and receive a unique color based upon his or her own “colormap”. Colormapping cannot only determine what colors work best with an individual's features, but also how best to structure it.

  • Publication number: 20120228566
Abstract: The present invention concerns a solid transparent OPL-material, (OPL; Optical Power Limiting). It comprises a solid polymer material that constitutes a matrix with therein dispersed particles. The particles are either nickel-ferrite(NiFe2O4), carbon black (C) or fullerene (C60)—The diameter of the particles is preferably in the sizes about 5-50% of the wavelength of the laser light that protection against is wanted. Those polymers as matrix materials yield OPL materials that both reveal good OPL-properties and good durability and stability during exposure to laser light irradiation of high intensity together with the said particles.

  • Patent number: 8255246
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for computing a variance between two business metrics is described. In one embodiment, the method computes a variance for each of a first set of activities based on the corresponding reference state of that activity, wherein the variance for an activity is the change in contribution for that activity between the first and second business metrics and with each of the first set of activities having a reference value. Furthermore, the method computes a variance for each of a second set of activities based on the corresponding start and end values of that activity with each of the second set of activities having a start and end value.

  • Publication number: 20120215621
Abstract: Example methods involve based on a first request to log a first media impression, generating a first identifier associated with a first client device that generated the first request, and sending a communication to the first client device. The communication includes the first identifier, and the communication is to cause the first client device to send the first identifier associated with the first client device to a database proprietor in association with a cookie identifier of the first client device. Second media impressions are logged in association with the first identifier of the first client device and second identifiers associated with second client devices based on second requests received from the first and second client devices. A batch including the second media impressions and the first and second identifiers is sent to the database proprietor. Demographic information associated with the second media impressions is received from the database proprietor.

  • Patent number: 8244575
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for computing a variance for the difference between two business metrics. In one embodiment, the method accesses a response model and a plurality of activities with start and end values for each of the plurality of activities. Furthermore, the method computes a variance for the difference between the first and second business metrics for each of the plurality of activities using the response model by setting that activity to one of the corresponding starting and ending values and setting others of the plurality of activities to the value state opposite of that activity, wherein the variance for an activity is the change in contribution for that activity between the start and end sales volumes.

  • Publication number: 20120201129
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for control admission to network resources are provided. Probationary service flows with a reduced priority are provisionally allowed to use network resources. As the network demonstrates its continued stability by the addition of the new probationary flows, each probationary flow can be re-assigned its original priority thereby promoting the probationary flow to a non-probationary status.

  • Publication number: 20120194502
Abstract: A catalog for storing externally defined graphic element (EDGE) definitions allows graphics developers and system designers to share customized and application-specific operator interface graphics. The catalog includes publishing functionality that allows a user to submit new graphic element definitions to the catalog together with instructions regarding how the graphic element definition is to be classified within a browsable hierarchy of industry-specific categories. Search and retrieval functionality allows an HMI developer to search for desired graphic element definitions using keyword-based searching or by browsing the classification hierarchy. Advanced search functions can generate or refine search criteria based on characterizing information polled from one or more of an operator interface application, an industrial control program, or networked field devices.

  • Patent number: 8232760
Abstract: A system and method for controlling an AC motor drive includes a control system programmed with an energy algorithm configured to optimize operation of the motor drive. Specifically, the control system input an initial voltage-frequency command to the AC motor drive based on an initial voltage/frequency (V/Hz) curve, receives a real-time output of the AC motor drive generated according to the initial voltage-frequency command, and feedback a plurality of modified voltage-frequency commands to the AC motor drive, each of the plurality of modified voltage-frequency commands comprising a deviation from the initial V/Hz curve. The control system also determines a real-time value of the motor parameter corresponding to each of the plurality of modified voltage-frequency commands, and feeds back a modified voltage-frequency command to the AC motor drive so that the real-time value of the motor parameter is within a motor parameter tolerance range.

  • Publication number: 20120189039
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of controlling a communications link and apparatus configured to perform this method. This invention is particularly related to but in no way limited to MIMO (multiple inputs multiple outputs) wireless communications systems. The method comprises the steps of determining at the receiver the quality of the communications link and based on this, selecting a group of transmission parameters and an element from this group. These selections are then communicated to the transmitter. The transmission parameter may be the transmission configuration such as the modulation and coding scheme. The invention minimises the required feedback signalling from the receiver to the transmitter by exploiting temporal correlation of the parameter being controlled, whilst allowing rapid selection of the parameter.
