  • Publication number: 20060059324
Abstract: A method of optimizing retention of signal information from a physiologically generated digital signal is provided. The method can comprise steps of generating a digital signal from a physiological source, storing the digital signal into a memory location as a stored digital signal, identifying within the stored digital signal a preferred digital signal event exclusive of a non-preferred digital signal event, wherein the preferred digital signal event has a first event compression level and the non-preferred digital signal event has a second event compression level, detecting a memory storage limitation in the memory location, and increasing the second event compression level of the non-preferred digital signal event as a result of detecting a memory storage limitation. Also, the portable monitor can detect the presence of an upload source to which the digital signal can be uploaded in order to minimize the need to compress the signal.

  • Patent number: 6993535
Abstract: This invention is a business system and method to perform categorization (classification) of multimedia items and to make business decisions based on the categorization of the item. The multimedia items are comprised of a multitude of disparate information sources, in particular, visual information and textual information. Classifiers are induced based on combining textual and visual feature vectors. Textual features are the traditional ones. Visual features include, but are not limited to, color properties of key intervals and motion properties of key intervals. The visual feature vectors are determined in such a fashion that the vectors are sparse. The text and the visual representation vectors are combined in a systematic and coherent fashion. This vector representation of a media item lends itself to well-established learning techniques and can be used for multimedia item categorization. The resulting business system, subject of this invention, can be used for many purposes.

  • Publication number: 20050228849
Abstract: A method for intelligent extraction of key-frames from a video that yields key-frames that depict meaningful content in the video. A method according to the present techniques includes selecting a set of candidate key-frames from among a series of video frames in a video by performing a set of analyses on each video frame. Each analysis is selected to detect a corresponding type of meaningful content in the video. The candidate key-frames are then arranged into a set of clusters and a key-frame is then selected from each cluster in response to its relative importance in terms of depicting meaningful content in the video.

  • Patent number: 6892193
Abstract: This invention is a system and method to perform categorization (classification) of multimedia items. These items are comprised of a multitude of disparate information sources, in particular, visual information and textual information. Classifiers are induced based on combining textual and visual feature vectors. Textual features are the traditional ones, such as, word count vectors. Visual features include, but are not limited to, color properties of key intervals and motion properties of key intervals. The visual feature vectors are determined in such a fashion that the vectors are sparse. The vector components are features such as the absence or presence of the color green in spatial regions and the absence or the amount of visual flow in spatial regions of the media items. The text and the visual representation vectors are combined in a systematic and coherent fashion. This vector representation of a media item lends itself to well-established learning techniques.

  • Patent number: 6873639
Abstract: In order to effectively solve thermal distortion problems and obtain high-power TEM00-mode operations for DPSS lasers, two major steps are presented in this invention. First, novel multipass pumping approaches and corresponding engineering designs have been developed for slab lasers and thin-disk lasers. They are characterized by using multipass and zig-zag pumping paths and confining pumping beams substantially via total-internal-reflection (TIR) to significantly reduce multiple reflection losses. Second, a zig-zag slab laser in combination with a beam-expanding cavity is employed to realize mode-matching pumping and maximize the energy extraction from laser slabs. It also leads to achieving high-power intracavity frequency conversions over wide spectral ranges and producing red and blue visible lasers with the aid of minimizing spatial hole burning.

  • Publication number: 20050027664
Abstract: An interactive machine learning based system that incrementally learns, on the basis of text data, how to annotate new text data. The system and method starts with partially annotated training data or alternatively unannotated training data and a set of examples of what is to be learned. Through iterative interactive training sessions with a user the system trains annotators, and these are in turn used to discover more annotations in the text data. Once all of the text data or a sufficient amount of the text data is annotated, at the user's discretion, the system learns a final annotator or annotators, which are exported and available to annotate new textual data. As the iterative training process occurs the user is selectively presented for review and appropriate action, system-determined representations of the annotation instances and provided a convenient and efficient interface so that context of use can be verified if necessary in order to evaluate the annotations and correct them, where required.

  • Publication number: 20050016360
Abstract: A method and system for automatic classification of music, wherein a music piece is received for classification, and the music piece is analyzed to determine whether the received music piece includes the sounds of human singing. If so, the music piece is classified by labeling the music piece as singing music. If not, the music piece is classified by labeling it as instrumental music. Each of the singing music pieces can be further classified as comprising a chorus or a vocal solo, and the vocal solo pieces can be additionally classified by gender and language. The instrumental music pieces are analyzed to determine whether the music piece is that of a symphony or that of a solo artist or small group of artists. The classification process and subsequent storage of the classified music pieces can be parameter controlled by a user to determine the categories by which to classify the music and the hierarchy for storing the classified music.

  • Publication number: 20040260540
Abstract: A method and system for analyzing an audio signal through the use of a spectrogram image of the audio signal. A two-dimension spectrogram of the audio portion of a multimedia signal is computed, and one or more morphological operators are applied to the spectrogram to create a spectral peak track image of the audio signal. Application of the morphological operators can extract the spectral peak tracks from background noise of the audio signal to show temporal patterns and spectral distribution of speech and music components of the audio signal. The spectral peak track image is analyzed to distinguish the speech and/or music content of the audio signal.

  • Publication number: 20040230790
Abstract: A host-side wireless interface services communications between a wireless user input device and a serviced host. The host-side wireless interface includes a wireless network interface, a host interface, and may include additional components. The wireless network interface wirelessly communicates with the wireless user input device. The host interface communicatively couples to the wireless interface and to the serviced host. When the serviced host initiates bootstrap operations via a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), the host interface operates in a BIOS host interface mode to allow input from the wireless user input device to the BIOS during the bootstrap operations. Further, when the serviced host initiates Operating System (OS) operations, the host interface operates in an OS host interface mode, wherein the OS host interface mode differs from the BIOS host interface mode.

  • Publication number: 20040064209
Abstract: A method and system for generating an audio thumbnail of an audio track in which a first content feature, such as singing, is detected as a characteristic of an audio track. A predetermined length of the detected portion of the audio track corresponding to the first content feature is extracted from the audio track. A highlight of the audio track, such as a portion of the audio track having a sudden increase in temporal energy within the audio track, is detected; and a portion of the audio track corresponding to the highlight is extracted from the audio track. The two extracted portions of the audio track are combined as a thumbnail of the audio track.
