Abstract: Accuracy of a three-dimensional imaging system is improved through the use of model-based calibration and lookup tables to resolve distance according to, e.g., x-displacement, y-displacement, or image disparity data. In an embodiment, the lookup table(s) stores localized parameterization data used to calculate calibrated results.

Abstract: A hybrid resistor/FET-logic demultiplexer (demux) is provided. According to an embodiment, hybrid nonoelectronics, which incorporate nanodevice crossbars on CMOS backplane circuits, can be implemented using the subject demux as the interface between the nanowires in the nanodevice crossbars and the microwires fabricated in the CMOS domain. Embodiments of the present invention incorporate resistor-logic and FET-logic to realize the demultiplexing function. In various embodiments, a single column of p-type FETs is used to convert the linear voltage output of a resistor-logic demux core into a nonlinear output so that the desired demultiplexing function can be much better approximated. The resistor-logic demux core design can still be optimized using constant weight codes, whereas the optimization constraint on the constant weight code construction is largely relaxed, which can result in a more area efficient demux.

Abstract: A backlight is provided for illuminating an at least partially transmissive display. The backlight includes a light source. A light guide receives the light from an edge surface and guides the light by total internal reflection. Groove structures which are located on at least one of the major surfaces of the light guide permit redistribution of light around obstacles that may be present within the light guide structure, thereby maintaining brightness uniformity of the backlight or illumination panel.

Abstract: Method, apparatus, and systems for extracting features from face regions and auxiliary identification regions of images are described. In one aspect, a face region containing at least a portion of a person's face is detected in an input image. An auxiliary identification region outside the face region is identified in the input image. Facial features characterizing the face region are determined. Auxiliary identification features characterizing the auxiliary identification region are calculated. An indexing datum is derived from the facial features and the auxiliary identification features. The indexing datum is stored in association with the input image.

Abstract: According to an aspect of the invention, a light guide is provided which includes a light guide substrate having a top surface through which light is to be emitted, a bottom surface, an incident edge surface through which incident light is to be introduced into the light guide substrate, and another edge surface. The another edge surface includes at least one micro structure operative to reflect at least a portion of the incident light, which travels through the light guide substrate and is incident on the another edge surface, back within the light guide substrate.

Abstract: The present invention relates to chimeric immune receptor molecules for reducing or eliminating tumors. The chimeric receptors are composed a C-type lectin-like natural killer cell receptor, or a protein associated therewith, fused to an immune signaling receptor containing an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif. Methods for using the chimeric receptors are further provided.

Abstract: Camera motion is determined in a three-dimensional image capture system using a combination of two-dimensional image data and three-dimensional point cloud data available from a stereoscopic, multi-aperture, or similar camera system. More specifically, a rigid transformation of point cloud data between two three-dimensional point clouds may be more efficiently parameterized using point correspondence established between two-dimensional pixels in source images for the three-dimensional point clouds.

Abstract: A computer implemented method is disclosed for controlling display of advertisements. The method includes selecting a policy that generates a slate of advertisements to be displayed when the policy is applied to a context. The method also includes applying the selected policy to the context to generate the slate of advertisements to be displayed, and displaying the slate of advertisements. The method further includes identifying a user-selected advertisement in the slate of advertisements, and calculating a cost of the user-selected advertisement to be charged to an owner of the advertisement. The cost is calculated based on the selected policy, the context, and the slate of advertisements.

Abstract: Various method and system embodiments of the present invention are directed to computational estimation of a tempo for a digitally encoded musical selection. In certain embodiments of the present invention, described below, a short portion of a musical selection is analyzed to determine the tempo of the musical selection. The digitally encoded musical selection sample is computationally transformed to produce a power spectrum corresponding to the sample, in turn transformed to produce a two-dimensional strength-of-onset matrix. The two-dimensional strength-of-onset matrix is then transformed into a set of strength-of-onset/time functions for each of a corresponding set of frequency bands. The strength-of-onset/time functions are then analyzed to find a most reliable onset interval that is transformed into an estimated tempo returned by the analysis.

Abstract: An exploratory ordering of advertisements is generated using an exploration policy that is a modified version of an existing policy. The exploration policy is defined to swap a pair of adjacent advertisements in an ordering of advertisements generated by the existing policy so to generate the exploratory ordering of advertisements. A top number of the exploratory ordering of advertisements are displayed. The top number corresponds to a number of available advertisement display spaces. Click data associated with display of the exploratory ordering of advertisements is collected. A revenue generation capability of a new policy is evaluated based on the collected click data.

Abstract: Respective pitch values are estimated for an audio signal. Candidate harmonic segments of the audio signal are identified from the estimated pitch values. Respective levels of harmonic content in the candidate harmonic segments are determined. An associated classification record is generated for each of the candidate harmonic segments based on a harmonic content predicate defining at least one condition on the harmonic content levels. An associated classification record also may be generated for each of the audio signal segments classified into a harmonic segment class based on a classification predicate defining at least one condition on the estimated pitch values. The classification records that are associated with ones of the harmonic segments satisfying the classification predicate include an assignment to a speech segment class. The classification records that are associated with ones of the harmonic segments failing to satisfy the classification predicate include an assignment to a music segment class.

Abstract: A host-side wireless interface services communications between a wireless user input device and a serviced host. The host-side wireless interface includes a wireless network interface, a host interface, and may include additional components. The wireless network interface wirelessly communicates with the wireless user input device. The host interface communicatively couples to the wireless interface and to the serviced host. When the serviced host initiates bootstrap operations via a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), the host interface operates in a BIOS host interface mode to allow input from the wireless user input device to the BIOS during the bootstrap operations. Further, when the serviced host initiates Operating System (OS) operations, the host interface operates in an OS host interface mode, wherein the OS host interface mode differs from the BIOS host interface mode.

Abstract: A method of providing customized medical monitoring to a patient is disclosed. The method can include steps of selecting a medical monitoring device for a patient, where the medical monitoring device is associated with a biological transducer, determining at least one desired monitoring parameter, and customizing locally the medical monitoring device to monitor the desired monitoring parameter collected by the biological transducer. The method may further include steps of providing the medical monitoring device to the patient, and monitoring at least one health parameter of the patient from a remote location. The medical monitoring device can also be customized remotely.

Abstract: A method and system for indexing a video sequence comprised of video information and audio information, wherein the video sequence has been created by at least one camera. The video sequence is separated into motion segments that were created while the camera was in motion and into still segments that were created while the camera was in a fixed position based on changes in the camera motion mode. Each still segment is partitioned into episodes based on changes in the audio information in each still segment, and the video sequence is indexed with an identifier that signifies at least a start or an end of an episode contained in the video sequence.

Abstract: Provided are, among other things, systems, methods, software programs and techniques for generating an audio thumbnail for a musical piece, in which locations of different repeating segments within an input musical piece are identified. In addition, a singing segment within the musical piece is detected based on a calculated singing metric that indicates when singing is present. A thumbnail criterion that defines a location of an audio thumbnail by reference to generic musical structure is obtained, and a segment of the musical piece is selected as the audio thumbnail based on the thumbnail criterion, together with the location of at least one of the plural different repeating segments and a location of at least a portion of the singing segment. The audio thumbnail is then played and/or stored for future playing.

Abstract: The present invention is directed towards systems and methods for ranking and providing advertisements in a position auction. The method of the present invention comprises receiving a search query and selecting at least one keyword based upon the search query. A list containing at least one keyword based upon the search query is returned and a list comprising at least one bid corresponding to the returned list of keywords is retrieved. A priority score corresponding to each bid is computed and used to rank the list of bids. Advertisements are then provided corresponding to a plurality of the highest ranking bids.
