  • Publication number: 20030182118
Abstract: A system and method for indexing multimedia files utilizes audio characteristics of predefined audio content contained in selected multimedia segments of the multimedia files to distinguish the selected multimedia segments. In the exemplary embodiment, the predefined audio content is speech contained in video segments of video files. Furthermore, the audio characteristics are speaker characteristics. The speech-containing video segments are detected by analyzing the audio contents of the video files. The audio contents of the speech-containing video segments are then characterized to distinguish the video segments according to speakers. The indexing of speech-containing video segments based on speakers allows users to selectively access video segments that contain speech from a particular speaker without having to manually search all the speech-containing video segments.

  • Patent number: 6571225
Abstract: A method to automatically categorize messages or documents containing text. The method of solution fits in the general framework of supervised learning, in which a rule or rules for categorizing data is automatically constructed by a computer on the basis of training data that has been labeled beforehand. More specifically, the method involves the construction of a linear separator: training data is used to construct for each category a weight vector w and a threshold t, and the decision of whether a hitherto unseen document d is in the category will depend on the outcome of the test wTx≧t, where x is a vector derived from the document d. The method also uses a set L of features selected from the training data in order to construct the numerical vector representation x of a document.

  • Publication number: 20030072884
Abstract: A method of forming a film structure (e.g., film stacks) comprising titanium (Ti) and/or titanium nitride (TiN). The Ti film structure is formed by alternately depositing and then plasma treating thin films (less than about 100 Å thick) of titanium. The TiN film structure is formed by alternately depositing and then plasma treating thin films (less than about 300 Å thick) of titanium nitride. The titanium films are formed using a plasma reaction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) and a hydrogen-containing gas. The titanium nitride films are formed by thermally reacting titanium tetrachloride with a nitrogen-containing gas. The subsequent plasma treatment steps comprise a nitrogen/hydrogen-containing plasma.

  • Patent number: 6531404
Abstract: The present disclosure pertains to a method of plasma etching a titanium nitride layer within a semiconductor structure. In many embodiments of the method, the titanium nitride layer is etched using a source gas comprising chlorine and a fluorocarbon. Also disclosed herein is a two-step method of plasma etching a titanium nitride gate consisting of a main etch step, followed by an overetch step which utilizes a source gas comprising chlorine and a bromine-containing compound, to etch a portion of the titanium nitride layer which was not etched in the main etch step. The chlorine/bromine overetch chemistry can be used in conjunction with a chlorine/fluorocarbon main etch chemistry, or with any other titanium nitride etch chemistry known in the art.

  • Publication number: 20030033347
Abstract: This invention is a system and method to perform categorization (classification) of multimedia items. These items are comprised of a multitude of disparate information sources, in particular, visual information and textual information. Classifiers are induced based on combining textual and visual feature vectors. Textual features are the traditional ones, such as, word count vectors. Visual features include, but are not limited to, color properties of key intervals and motion properties of key intervals. The visual feature vectors are determined in such a fashion that the vectors are sparse. The vector components are features such as the absence or presence of the color green in spatial regions and the absence or the amount of visual flow in spatial regions of the media items. The text and the visual representation vectors are combined in a systematic and coherent fashion. This vector representation of a media item lends itself to well-established learning techniques.

Abstract: A method to automatically categorize messages or documents containing text. The method of solution fits in the general framework of supervised learning, in which a rule or rules for categorizing data is automatically constructed by a computer on the basis of training data that has beforehand been categorized, i.e., each training data item has been labeled with the categories to which it belongs. More specifically, the method for rule induction involves the novel combination of (1) inducing from the training data a decision tree for each category, (2) automated construction from each decision tree of a simplified symbolic rule set that is logically equivalent overall to the decision tree, and which is to be used for categorization instead of the decision tree, and (3) determination of a confidence level for each rule.

  • Patent number: 6476308
Abstract: The present invention is directed to classifying a musical piece based on determined characteristics for each of plural notes contained within the piece. Exemplary embodiments accommodate the fact that in a continuous piece of music, the starting and ending points of a note may overlap previous notes, the next note, or notes played in parallel by one or more instruments. This is complicated by the additional fact that different instruments produce notes with dramatically different characteristics. For example, notes with a sustaining stage, such as those produced by a trumpet or flute, possess high energy in the middle of the sustaining stage, while notes without a sustaining stage, such as those produced by a piano or guitar, posses high energy in the attacking stage when the note is first produced.

  • Publication number: 20020105997
Abstract: In order to effectively solve thermal distortion problems and obtain high-power TEM00-mode operations for DPSS lasers, two major steps are presented in this invention. First, novel multipass pumping approaches and corresponding engineering designs have been developed for slab lasers and thin-disk lasers. They are characterized by using multipass and zig-zag pumping paths and confining pumping beams substantially via total-internal-reflection (TIR) to significantly reduce multiple reflection losses. Second, a zig-zag slab laser in combination with a beam-expanding cavity is employed to realize mode-matching pumping and maximize the energy extraction from laser slabs. It also leads to achieving high-power intracavity frequency conversions over wide spectral ranges and producing red and blue visible lasers with the aid of minimizing spatial hole burning.

  • Patent number: 6373868
Abstract: Key technologies have been developed in realizing single longitudinal mode CW operation with a regular standing-wave cavity for intracavity frequency doubling and intracavity frequency conversions, so as to produce all solid-state, true cw devices with operation over wide spectral ranges including green, blue and UV. In one method, a beam expander (23 or 41) is applied to render a large mode waist and an improved beam divergence so as to greatly reduce the insertion losses for intracavity optical elements (17, 18 or 44). In another method, when spatial hole burning effect is minimized by using a pump head (12) with a thin gain zone (2), then a low resolving-power spectral filter with low loss can be utilized. In addition, several novel optical multipass constructions, typically by use of total-internal-reflection, have also been devised for pumping laser chips, laser rods, laser slabs, and for the use of multipass optical amplifier and pumping fiber lasers.

  • Patent number: 5909888
Abstract: A twist-beam rear axle for motor vehicles includes a flexurally stiff but torsionally compliant cross strut (2) which is combined with flexurally and torsionally stiff longitudinal arms (3) carrying an axle coupling (6) and a hub carrier (7). The cross strut (2) consists of an extruded aluminum channel section which determines the position of the roll center (RC) and of which the open-bottom U-shaped cross-section has closed chambers (25 and 26) at the free ends of its sides (21 and 22). At the ends of the cross strut (2) the sides (21 and 22) of the section are separated and are bent apart outwards to form portions of the longitudinal arms (3) which are closed by corresponding shaped members (8). Upper and lower chambers (23, 24 and 25, 26) are provided in each side (21 and 22) of the section allowing tuning of the torsional rigidity of the cross strut.
