  • Publication number: 20090046641
Abstract: Several medium access control methods are disclosed. One such method is a method for requesting an uplink resource allocation. In this method, a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) receives a trigger and sends an uplink resource request to a Node B based on the trigger. The WTRU receives an uplink resource assignment and prepares for an uplink transmission using the resource assignment. The WTRU then sends an acknowledgement that the uplink resource allocation was received. A wireless transmit/receive unit according to one embodiment includes a trigger device and a processor. The trigger device is configured to receive a trigger. The processor is in communication with the trigger device, and is configured to send an uplink resource request upon receipt of the trigger, receive an uplink resource assignment, and send an acknowledgement upon receipt of the uplink resource assignment.

  • Publication number: 20080287129
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing wireless communication services, (e.g., multimedia broadcast multicast services (MBMS)), are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) detects a plurality of target cell evolved Node-Bs (eNodeBs) that neighbor a serving cell eNodeB. The WTRU evaluates cell reselection criteria and determines a neighboring target cell eNodeB to reselect. The WTRU receives and reads master information block (MIB) and system information messages of the neighboring target cell eNodeB, and confirms that the determined neighboring target cell eNodeB is not part of a multimedia broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN). The WTRU identifies the neighboring target cell eNodeB to the serving cell eNodeB.

  • Publication number: 20080268878
Abstract: A WTRU configured to receive a multicast, a unicast or mixed signal. A multimedia signal may be a Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Signal (MBMS). The WTRU switches between an MBMS and a mixed signal and determines optimal time to switch between the MBMS and mixed signal. The WTRU switches between receiving the MBMS and mixed signal in an adaptive or semi-static pattern. A flat broadcast channel (BCH) structure in an MBMS dedicated cell is provided, eliminating need for a dedicated broadcast channel (D-BCH). An MBMS-dedicated cell uses a single paging channel for both paging-indicators and paging-record-blocks. A system information broadcast indicates flexible resource usage and paging-record-block limits. Tracking area (TA)/cell association is provided for an MBMS-dedicated cell and geographically co-located non-MBMS-dedicated cells. MBMS-dedicated cell system information is broadcast to regulate WTRU operation while receiving MBMS within said cell.

  • Publication number: 20080259870
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a handover are disclosed. An Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) client registers with an IMS network and establishes an MIH session with an MIH application server using an SIP. The IMS client establishes a session for IP-based service, (e.g., VoIP), with a communication peer using SIP messaging. MIH messages are exchanged for handover with the MIH application server over IP using SIP messages by encapsulating the MIH messages in SIP instant messages. Alternatively, the MIH messages may be exchanged with the MIH application over IP by sending equivalent SIP messages in place of the MIH messages.

  • Publication number: 20080227453
Abstract: A method of cell reselection in a wireless communications system where parameters are transmitted by the network in system information blocks to WTRU's on the network. Parameters are either added or subtracted from an equation representing the signal power and/or quality of a cell. Parameters may be prioritized. The results of the calculations are used to rank the servicing cell and neighboring cells. If a neighboring cell has a higher quality than the servicing cell, then the WTRU reselects the better cell. The network may transmit a blacklist of cells where the WTRU cannot camp as well as a barring timer for each cell where if the timer expires, the cell may again be considered for reselection. Information germane to the reselection decision may be transmitted and used by the network.

  • Publication number: 20080219215
Abstract: A first media independent handover function (MIHF) receives a media independent handover (MIH) capabilities discovery request from a second MIHF and generates a MIH capabilities discovery response message, including one or more parameters. Then the first MIHF then sends the MIH capabilities discovery response to the second MIHF. Based on the information contained in the MIH capabilities discovery response, the first MIHF may receive a handover request message from the second MIHF. The one or more parameters included within the discovery response message indicates the specific technologies for which the first MIHF supports a MMB handover. The one or more parameters may include a list of the technologies for which a make-before-break (MMB) handover is supported. For example, a parameter may use a specific bit structure wherein each bit is a Boolean representation of whether MMB handover is supported for a specific type of technology.
