  • Patent number: 6786679
Abstract: An offshore well platform is towed in an upright condition to a well site by the use of a temporary flotation device. The flotation device mounts to a portion of the platform and is partially submerged, increasing the ability and buoyancy of the platform. At the site, the engagement of the flotation device shifts to a deploying position. In the deploying position, the ballast of the platform is increased to cause it to more deeply submerge. The flotation device remains at least partially surrounding the platform and floating while the platform moves downwardly relative to it. This provides lateral support if needed to prevent heeling while being submerged. The flotation device is disengageable from the platform when the platform is fully submerged.

  • Publication number: 20030133523
Abstract: In a wireless communication receiver (31) of a wireless communication system that utilizes transmit diversity and turbo coding, symbol decisions are based at least in part on a posteriori probabilities (47, 48) produced by SISO decoders (35, 36). These probabilities are produced iteratively in alternating fashion to support the symbol decision process. The SISO decoder associated with the weakest (92) wireless communication channel goes first (93) in the iterative process.

  • Patent number: 6594512
Abstract: A system is disclosed which first identifies a plurality of characteristics of a physiological signal any one of which may represent a physiological parameter. A plurality of different techniques are used to provide respective likelihood factors for each such identified characteristic. The resulting likelihood factors are then analyzed to select the one characteristic of the physiological signal which most likely represents the desired physiological parameter. The physiological parameter is then calculated from the selected characteristic of the physiological signal.

  • Publication number: 20030092974
Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention provide a system to monitor a patient. In some aspects, a signal representing a value of a physiological parameter is received from a monitoring device. The received value is a value that caused the monitoring device to trigger an alarm associated with the psychological parameter. A notification is determined based on the received signal and on a second signal that represents a value of a second physiological parameter. The notification is then presented to an operator.

  • Publication number: 20030018898
Abstract: A unique method, system, and computer-program product for providing selective access to (and selective exclusion from) certain nodes of a DOM tree is disclosed. Each DOM node is provided with a naming mechanism; in a preferred embodiment each node is assigned a permanent name using an XML attribute NAME to identify each node, and each node is also assigned a “context state value” using an XML attribute “CONTEXT”. Changes to the operating context of the DOM tree affect the accessibility of each node in the tree. By correlating the “CONTEXT” attribute of a child node (or nodes) to the “CONTEXT” attribute of a parent node, the correlated child node is accessible by the parent.

  • Publication number: 20020174122
Abstract: An architecture to enable search gateways as part of a federated search supports searching for data in one or more heterogeneous data sources. The one or more heterogeneous data sources are within a computer system. Initially, a request for data is received at a federated data source. From the federated data source, data is retrieved from one or more of one or more terminal data repositories or one or more search gateway data sources.

  • Patent number: 6479169
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium using a nonmagnetic interlayer in between a Cr-base underlayer and a Co magnetic layer is disclosed. The nonmagnetic interlayer comprises Co1−&agr;−&bgr;−&ggr;−&zgr;Cr&agr;X&bgr;Y&ggr;Z&zgr;. X is a material selected from Ni or Fe so as to substitute a portion of Cr composition. Y is a material selected from materials which can form a solid solution with at least one of list materials consisting of Ni, Fe, Co, and Cr. The Y materials added in the interlayer is to adjust the lattice mismatch of interface between the interlayer and the underlayer to a magnitude so that the interlayer formed on the underlayer at least is a texture layer, an epitaxial layer is best preferred. However, Z is a material which is insoluble with any of above list materials, Cr, Co, X, and Y in a solid state so as to form precipitates, thereby inhibiting the grain growth. In a preferred embodiment, the &agr;, &bgr;, &ggr;, and &zgr; are about 25-41%, 0.1-5%, 0.1-5%, and 0.

  • Patent number: 6466933
Abstract: A technique for delayed delivery of query results or other data from a federated server to a federated client until such information is needed. One or more commands are executed at a client computer to retrieve data from one or more datastores connected to a server computer. At the client computer, a search request is transmitted to the server computer. Then, a client collection is generated for use in retrieving physical data from the server computer. When data is requested using the client collection, physical data is retrieved from the server computer.

  • Publication number: 20020115463
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, coded bits (Yt) and an interleaved version of the coded bits (Xt) are separately modulated and transmitted. On the receiver side, a priori output probabilities produced by a probability generator (34) are combined (112) and then input to a SISO decoder (111). Combined a posteriori output probabilities (115) produced by the SISO decoder are split (113) and then fed back to the probability generator.

  • Publication number: 20020102232
Abstract: A recombinant first antigen, coupled with a foreign protein (such as immunoglobulin Fc from different species), can be used as a vaccine to induce active auto-immunity specifically through a T cell-dependent antibody response. The induced autoantibodies can recognize self-antigen in vivo and trigger immune responses to reduce or eliminate a target autologous antigen. Since there is evidence that the pathogenesis of some diseases, such as cancer, allergy, arthritis, atherosclerosis, graft rejection, or other inflammatory diseases, are caused by increased levels of certain autologous proteins, the instant compositions and methods provide a method of inducing autoantibodies to down-regulate the levels of a target autologous antigen or cells expressing the antigen to ameliorate diseases or disorders.
