    Abstract: A single phase permanent magnet motor includes a rotor, a stator, and a quadrature axis winding positioned out-of-phase from a main winding of the stator for generating an output signal representative of rotor angular position. An integrator can be coupled to the quadrature axis winding for phase retarding the output signal, and a comparator can be coupled to the integrator for detecting zero crossings of the phase retarded output signal to provide a commutation signal. The quadrature axis winding can be positioned about ninety electrical degrees out-of-phase from the main winding of the stator, and the integrator can be adapted to phase retard the output signal by a number of degrees which decreases as a speed of the motor increases. At low speeds the phase retard is preferably at about ninety degrees so that the phase retarded signal becomes in-phase with the main stator winding back EMF voltage.

    Abstract: An improved gas injection nozzle for use in gas-assisted injection molding process is disclosed. The improved gas injection nozzle comprises: (a) a nozzle body, and a nozzle cap fixedly connected to the nozzle body; (b) a gas inlet provided in the nozzle body so as to allow gas to be injected into a mold cavity via a gas channel formed inside both the nozzle body and the nozzle cap; (c) a heating coil provided on the gas injection nozzle; and (d) at least one circumferential groove formed on the outer surface of the nozzle cap. The circumferential groove formed on the outer surface of the nozzle cap preferably has the shape of a spiral groove, with a depth between about 0.2 mm and about 0.5 mm and a length between about 50 mm and about 150 mm. The combination of the heating coil and the circumferential groove prevents the formation of micro cracks that are often formed in the interstices between the nozzle cap and the sprue bushing during the cooling stage of injection molding process.

    Abstract: A motor with positive torque parking positions. The motor includes a rotor which is rotatable about an axis of rotation and a stator in magnetic coupling relation with the rotor. The stator includes a plurality of teeth each having a radially extending shaft and an axially extending face. The faces of the stator teeth define an aperture for receiving the rotor and the faces of the stator teeth and the rotor define an air gap therebetween. Each stator tooth has a notch in its face that is approximately at least as wide as the shaft of the stator tooth so that the stator has a magnetic configuration relative to the rotor for parking the rotor in a rest position corresponding to a positive torque starting position. The motor also includes a winding on the shafts of the stator teeth and a control circuit for controlling current in the winding whereby an electromagnetic field is produced for rotating the rotor at a desired speed or torque during operation of the motor.

    Abstract: Connecting a null modem cable between first and second communications ports of a host computer and executing a background routing program which transfers information between the second communications ports and a host signal processor (HSP) modem enables a DOS application which is configured to directly access a hardware UART of the first communication port to communicate with the HSP modem even if the HSP lacks a hardware UART. In one embodiment, the DOS application runs in a DOS virtual machine in a Windows.TM. operating system, and the routing application runs in a system virtual machine. The HSP modem includes a software portion inside a port driver in the operating system kernel. The routing program is started before the DOS application, executed in the background of the DOS application, and removed after completion of the DOS application.

    Abstract: The process of this invention can be utilized to stabilize tin-coupled rubbery polymers. This process involves adding a chelating diamine to the rubbery polymer after the tin coupling has been carried out. This invention more specifically discloses a process for improving the stability of a tin-coupled rubbery polymer which comprises adding a tertiary chelating amine to the tin-coupled rubbery polymer subsequent to the time at which the tin-coupled rubbery polymer is coupled. The tertiary chelating amine will preferably be a tertiary chelating alkyl 1,2-ethylene diamine, such as N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine.

    Abstract: In a five-axis magnetic bearing, each of two combined radial and axial magnetic bearing structures includes a radial magnetic stator and a radial magnetic rotor. A shaft supports the rotors of the bearing structures. Each rotor and stator have an asymmetrical orientation such that the bearing structure is capable of creating a force in an axial direction when the bearing structure is excited. A creatable axial force of a first one of the bearing structures is capable of being in sufficient opposition to a creatable force of a second one of the bearing structures so as to maintain the shaft assembly in a desired axial position. The asymmetrical orientation may include, for example, a rotor being physically offset from a stator or a spatial distinction between a surface region of a respective rotor and a surface region of a respective stator. Examples of spatial distinctions include material extensions, notches, and holes.

    Abstract: A method of forming a self-aligned contact for a transistor formed on a substrate. A self-aligned silicide layer is formed on the surface of a source/drain region of the transistor. A silicon oxide/silicon nitride layer is formed over the transistor. Then, a planarization process is performed to fill a trench between gates with, for example, borophosphosilicate glass. In particular, wet etching using a 20:1 buffered oxide etchant is performed to increase the selectivity of the silicon oxide/silicon nitride layer.

    Abstract: The subject invention relates to a technique for synthesizing rubbery copolymers of styrene and butadiene and/or isoprene. These rubbers exhibit an excellent combination of properties for utilization in high performance tire tread rubber compounds. The subject invention specifically discloses a process for preparing a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) which comprises: copolymerizing from about 30 weight percent to about 55 weight percent styrene and from about 45 weight percent to about 70 weight percent 1,3-butadiene in an alkane solvent, such as hexane, at a temperature which is within the range of about -10.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. in the presence of (a) an alkali metal alkoxide, and (b) an organolithium compound, wherein the molar ratio of the alkali metal alkoxide to the organolithium compound is within the range of about 0.01:1 to about 1:1.

C. to about 100.degree. C. in the presence of a sodium alkoxide and a polar modifier, wherein the molar ratio of the sodium alkoxide to the lithium initiator is within the range of about 0.05:1 to about 3:1; and wherein the molar ratio of the polar modifier to the lithium initiator is within the range of about 0.25:1 to about 5:1.
