  • Patent number: 7916783
Abstract: In the invention, a rate distortion optimization (RDO) based rate control scheme is comprised of following two steps: first, does bit allocation for every frame in a GOP, and based on the allocated bits, a predicted quantization parameter is used to do the first rate distortion optimization mode selection for every macroblock in the current frame; second, the information of the current macroblock collected from the first rate distortion mode selection is used to calculate a final quantization parameter for rate control, and if the final quantization parameter is different from the predicted one, a second rate distortion mode selection will be executed again. A rate distortion optimization based rate control implementation includes following modules: a video coding encoder module (for example, H.264/JVT processing module), rate distortion optimization based macroblock mode selection and adaptive quantization module, virtual buffer, and global complexity estimation module.

  • Patent number: 7881343
Abstract: A communications system includes a wireless telephony network and a wireless Local Area Network (LAN), both accessible by a mobile communications device (16). To facilitate transitioning of the mobile communications device to the wireless LAN from the wireless telephony network, the wireless LAN includes a beacon transmitter, which generates a synchronization channel having a pattern unique to the wireless LAN. The Wireless LAN synchronization channel is received at a first receiver in the mobile communications device together with a synchronization channel from the wireless telephony. The wireless LAN synchronization channel enables the mobile communication device to synchronize with, for transitioning to, the wireless LAN.

  • Publication number: 20110013731
Abstract: This dissertation addresses the intersection of personal wireless technology and computational intelligence. The primary research issue addressed is the organization of radio domain knowledge into data structures processable in real-time that integrate machine learning and natural language processing technology into software radio. The thesis defines and develops the cognitive radio architecture. The features needed in the architecture are derived from cognitive radio use cases. These include inferring user communications context, shaping access-network demand, and realizing a protocol for real-time radio spectrum rental. Mathematical foundations for the knowledge-representation architecture are derived by applying point-set topology to the requirements of the use cases. This results in the set-theoretic ontology of radio knowledge defined in the Radio Knowledge Representation Language (RKRL). The mathematical analysis also demonstrates that isochronous radio software is not Turing-computable.

  • Publication number: 20110002418
Abstract: A DMB-T receiver supports a single carrier (SC) form of modulation and a multi-carrier form of modulation such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Upon receiving a broadcast signal, the DMB-T receiver downconverts the received broadcast signal to a received base-band signal and determines a frame number for each frame by correlating groups of the received symbols in adjacent signal frames. In particular, the receiver determines a maximum right-shift correlation value and a maximum left-shift correlation value. If the magnitude of the maximum right-shift correlation value is greater than, or equal to, the magnitude of the maximum left-shift correlation value, then the maximum right shift correlation value is used to retrieve a frame number from a look-up table. Otherwise, the negative value of the maximum left-shift correlation value is used to retrieve a frame number from the look-up table.

Upon receiving a broadcast signal, the DMB-T receiver downconverts the received broadcast signal to a received base-band signal and determines frame timing synchronization from the received signal as a function of frame header mode 1 and frame header mode 3 by correlating groups of received symbols spaced at least two signal frames apart within a sample shift value in a range of plus or minus one.

  • Patent number: 7853242
Abstract: A bypass server is placed in an outgoing link between a mobile device server and a relay used to distribute data from the mobile device server to remote mobile devices to which the data is addressed. Where a direct connection is established between a suitably configured network node (such as a personal computer) and a given mobile device, the bypass server may form a local connection with the network node and divert along the local connection those packets that are addressed to the given mobile device. As such, a lower cost/higher bandwidth local communication path between the given mobile device and the mobile device server may be established, when compared to the conventional remote communication path. The local communication path may be especially useful for bulk data transfers.
