  • Patent number: 7380721
Abstract: A barcode sensor package has an optical emitter circuit and an optical detector circuit which are formed as one or more integrated optical circuits disposed in a housing which has a reading surface and one or more apertures located between the optical emitter and detector circuits. The optical emitter circuit has an emitter die, such as a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), for emitting a light beam and a diffraction optical element disposed on the emitter die for focusing the light beam to a bar code. The optical detector circuit has a photodetector die, such as a phototransistor, for detecting reflective light and another diffraction optical element disposed on the photodetector die for guiding light reflected from the bar code to the detector. The diffraction optical elements are fabricated by patterning optical layers, deposited on respective emitter and detector dies, using photolithograph or a direct write process.

  • Publication number: 20080105059
Abstract: A strain gauge sensor system and method for measuring the strain in a member, such as a fiber rope, has a sensor target assembly having a plurality of magnets carried spaced apart by individual gauge lengths along the member. Position and trigger sensor devices are configured spaced apart along side a desired path of travel of the member. When the member is fed along the desired path of travel, the trigger sensor device, in response to magnetically sensing a passing magnet, triggers the position sensor device to read the position of an adjacent passing magnet. The strain in the gauge length is determined from the read position. RFID tags placed on the member between the magnets can be identified by an RF reader to identify a particular gauge length being measured. The system can include a deployment device for feeding the member along the desired path.

  • Publication number: 20070145309
Abstract: The invention provides an optical liquid level sensor used to determine the level of a liquid within a vessel. The sensor includes two adjacent elongated optical elements, such as optical fibers, which connect a first end, or “sensing end”, to a second end, or “non-sensing end”. The sensing end includes an optical lens for sensing the level of a high temperature liquid, while the non-sensing end includes electronic components for processing optical signal data relating to the sensed liquid level. The ends are sufficiently separated by the elongated optical elements, such that high temperatures exerted on the sensing end when it is immersed in high-temperature liquid are not exerted on the non-sensing end. This configuration avoids the temperature degradation of the electronic components, thus extending the lifetime of the sensor.

  • Publication number: 20070071448
Abstract: An optical keyless entry sensor system and method includes an optical sensor in association with a mirror that reflects light transmitted from the optical sensor, wherein reflected light is detectable by the optical sensor. An attenuation filter can be located between the mirror and the optical sensor, wherein the attenuation filter is configured to simulate a contamination of the optical sensor in order to determine an exact level of attenuation representative of contamination that causes a performance failure of the optical sensor, thereby providing data which is indicative of a dynamic range of the optical sensor, such that the dynamic range is utilized to enhance the performance of the optical keyless entry sensor system.
