  • Publication number: 20080034788
Abstract: A temperature control pack for refrigerating a shipping container includes a mass of gel material which is shape-retaining at room temperature, and is configured as a relatively thick rectangular solid. The mass of gel material is enclosed in a first plastic film bag, and also in a second plastic film bag providing a sheath about the first bag, and also enclosing a quantity of air to provide an insulating and cushioning air space between the bags. Especially at the ends of the mass of gel material and surrounding bags, an air cushion space is provided in order to safeguard the plastic bags against bursting caused by “water hammer” effect from dropping, impacts, or jarring of the shipping container. The thick rectangular shape of the mass of gel material, along with the pair of plastic film bags, in combination with the insulating air space, provide a leak-resistant temperature control pack with increased refrigerating endurance.

  • Publication number: 20070258119
Abstract: This invention relates to an optical device and system for producing a holographic optical element or digital hologram. Various techniques of producing digital holograms have been proposed. However, they tend to suffer from long exposure times, as well as problems associated with control of two or more independent beams of coherent light used to produce a hologram. Problems become even more acute as pixel size decreases. The present invention provides an optical device including: a beam deflector, adapted to deflect a collimated beam of coherent light to produce an incident beam; a beam splitter for producing first and second beams, said beams being displaced so that the angle of deflection of the first beam is the same but opposite to the angle of deflection of the second beam; and a combiner combines the first and second beams so as to produce an interference pattern at an output plane.

  • Publication number: 20050286068
Abstract: Systems, apparatus and methods are described whereby a common power distribution line to which a number of non-networked printers at a given site are connected. The printers are enabled to transfer performance data such as the number of pages printed by each printer to a central data collection station. The central data collection station aggregates the data from each printer may send the aggregated data onto a system print owner/manager. Each printer in the system is provided with a modified power supply or “brick” which normally functions to transform the supply current from the power distribution line to a lower voltage (i.e., 24 v AC) and supply the transformed voltage to the printer for operation thereof. A power-line networking function or capability is added to the “brick” which allows it to communicate with a data collection appliance over the common power distribution line. The “brick” is also modified to contain a feature which permits counting of each page printed on a respective printer.

  • Publication number: 20050151610
Abstract: An intriguing and educational display structure (1) appears to be spinning upon itself without any apparent drive mechanism, power supply or bearing. The structure comprises two concentric hollow spheres (3, 5) spaced apart by a transparent fluid (6). The outer sphere is totally transparent, immobile, and may rest on a tripod (2) or other type of support. The inner sphere may be partially transparent or translucent and carries over its surface, a design such as a map of the world (7). The inner sphere rotates within, and independently from, the first outer one. The internal, that is self-contained, drive mechanism uses either a conventional electrical motor (8) with its own field winding and commutator, or one made of a rotor comprising a cross-array of electromagnets (AC, BD) that interact with an ambient magnetic field such as the earth magnetic field.

  • Publication number: 20050102869
Abstract: In a display device where a moving object is immersed in a fluid filling a transparent sealed, vesel (72) and is rotated by an internal electrical mechanism that derives it power from a photo cell (128) and its counter torque from an internal compass (140), the index of refraction of the fluid is adjusted by addition of water to match the index of refraction of the vesel material. The formula of the fluid is also tailored to minimize, absorption of ambient moisture into the vessel. In one embodiment of the electrical spinning mechanism, the magnet acts both as a biasing compass and as a magnetic field generator for the motor. In a second embodiment of the spinning mechanism, the stator is constituted by a multipole ring-shaped magnet (120) that does not interfere with the operation of the biasing compass magnet (140). Multiple windings in the electrical spinning mechanism are energized through a split-ring and brush commutator (92) that use the mechanism shaft (122) as conductor.

  • Patent number: 6481527
Abstract: An apparatus attenuates noise from a cabinet that houses computer equipment. The apparatus includes a frame, a set of positioning members to position the frame relative to the cabinet, and lateral noise absorption members that are supported by the frame. The lateral noise absorption members define surfaces that form sides of airflow channels through the apparatus. The surfaces are substantially non-parallel to a direction of an airflow pathway through the cabinet when the set of positioning members positions the frame relative to the cabinet. The lateral noise absorption members absorb sound energy emanating from the cabinet (e.g., from a fan assembly within the cabinet). The lateral noise absorption members transform some of the sound energy into low level heat which can be dissipated into the air stream. Additionally, some of the sound energy is reflected back into the cabinet toward the source.
