  • Patent number: 10182360
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are disclosed for performing ranging operations between an initiator device and a responder device. The initiator device may transmit, to the responder device, a fine timing measurement (FTM) request frame including a request to estimate angle information for a number of frames exchanged between the initiator device and the responder device and indicating a level of accuracy for the estimated angle information. The initiator device may receive a first FTM frame from the responder device, and may transmit an acknowledgement (ACK) frame to the responder device. The initiator device may receive, from the responder device, a second FTM frame including angle information of the first FTM frame and timing information of one or more of the exchanged frames.

  • Publication number: 20190007114
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for wireless communication. In one aspect, a method of wireless communication includes utilizing a sounding procedure to obtain compressed beamforming (CBF) information. The sounding procedure may be a single-user or multi-user sounding procedure. The CBF information may contain various information regarding a particular channel that an access point may use for transmission. The information may include per-tone SNR information which may be processed to determine characteristics of the channel. Various techniques may be utilized to determine the further characteristics of the channel. The determined characteristics of the channel may then be used to determine an appropriate guard interval (GI) between symbols that are to be transmitted. Appropriate GI selection in wireless communications may facilitate higher throughput while decreasing overhead due to unnecessary idle time.

  • Patent number: 10159068
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses for selecting a guard interval for transmission of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols on an uplink (UL) channel and on a downlink (DL) channel. In some implementations, a transmitting device and a receiving device can estimate channel delay spread (CDS) information for each other's transmit channels, exchange the estimated CDS information with each other, and select a guard interval based on the estimated CDS information exchanged with each other. The transmitting device can transmit a number of OFDM symbols separated by the selected guard interval to the receiving device on the UL channel, and the receiving device can transmit a number of OFDM symbols separated by the selected guard interval to the transmitting device on the DL channel.

  • Patent number: 10142781
Abstract: Disclosed are methods, systems and devices for obtaining a range between devices based, at least in part, on an exchange of wireless messages. For example, wireless devices may obtain measurements of range based, at least in part, on an exchange fine timing measurement (FTM) messages. In one implementation, an initial FTM request message may be transmitted from a first wireless transceiver device to a second wireless transceiver device comprising one or more parameters indicative of a request for transmission of FTM messages in a particular format.

  • Patent number: 10135638
Abstract: Generally, the described techniques provide for protection mechanisms for sounding training signals transmitted between wireless devices when performing ranging sounding estimation. For example, sounding training signals may be encoded to include a sequence of phase rotations or cyclic shifts to protect the sounding training signal from peer devices. In some cases, encoding information associated with a long training field (LTF) may be transmitted either before or after the LTF is transmitted. Additionally or alternatively, a time delay may be introduced to the sounding training signal, where timing information may be removed from one or more fields of the sounding training signal and the time delay may be appended to an interframe spacing. Alternatively, a frame may be split into multiple frames with the sounding training signal in a first frame, and timing information in a second frame that is offset in time from the first frame.

  • Publication number: 20180262866
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatuses for detecting motion based on wireless signals. In some implementations, a receiving device may receive, from a transmitting device, a packet containing a sequence. In some aspects, the packet may be a Bluetooth packet, and the sequence may be contained in a supplemental information appended to the Bluetooth packet. The receiving device may estimate angle information of the packet based on the sequence, and determine a difference between the estimated angle information and a reference angle. The angle information may be an angle of arrival (AoA) or an angle of departure (AoD) of the packet. The receiving device may detect motion based on the determined difference.

  • Patent number: 10057832
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are disclosed that may perform ranging operations between a first device and a second device. The second device transmits an FTM request frame indicating a number of supported non-legacy ACK frame formats, and receives a first FTM frame indicating capabilities of the first device to receive each of the non-legacy ACK frame formats supported by the second device. The second device selects one of the non-legacy ACK frame formats or a legacy ACK frame format based, at least in part, on the indicated capabilities of the first device, and then transmits ACK frames using the selected frame format during the ranging operation.

  • Publication number: 20180227714
Abstract: Method, apparatus and systems for detecting motion of an object based on a received wireless signal include comparing a received wireless signal to an adaptive noise immunity threshold, if the received wireless signal satisfies the adaptive noise immunity threshold. The detecting motion is based at least in part on a comparison between a determined multipath amount of the received wireless signal and a reference multipath amount, and further by adjusting the adaptive noise immunity threshold from a first level to a second level prior to the comparing of the received wireless signal to the noise immunity threshold, where the second level is higher than the first level.

  • Patent number: 9971014
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for a wireless positioning framework in which an access point (AP) broadcasts a message within a beacon interval that identifies a transmission schedule for a set of stations. The message may include an information element identifying the stations in the set. The set may be determined based on station clock drifts and/or a ranging accuracy sought by the AP. The AP may also provide a station identifier, and frame spacing and delay parameters, which may be used to determine a distinct backoff for each station. Using distinct backoffs allow the stations to avoid collisions when sending the transmissions. The AP may receive the transmissions according to the identified schedule and may determine a range (e.g., round-trip time) for each station in the set based at least on a time at which the respective transmission is received.

The responder device may transmit a first fine timing measurement (FTM) frame to the initiator device, may receive an acknowledgement (ACK) frame from the responder device, and may transmit a second FTM frame to the initiator device. The second FTM frame may include a time value and angle information. The time value may indicate a difference between a time of departure (TOD) of the first FTM frame and a time of arrival (TOA) of the ACK frame. The angle information may indicate a direction of the initiator device relative to the responder device. The initiator device may determine its position, relative to the responder device, based at least in part on the received time value and angle information.
