  • Patent number: 7380178
Abstract: An optical recording medium record/playback apparatus manages defective areas in a rewritable optical recording medium. A linear replacement control (LRC) bit is added to a secondary defective list (SDL) entry to discriminate defective block information listed in the SDL entry, according to a linear replacement algorithm, from defective block information listed at the SDL entry, according to a skipping algorithm. This allows the apparatus to transmit correct information to a host. When a defective block requiring a new replacement block is found during recording or playing back data and the spare area is full, instead of carrying out the linear replacement, the LRC bit is set in the SDL entry, along with the location information of the defective block. This indicates that the SDL entry was made when the spare area was full. Thus, data is not written in, or read from, the defective block.

  • Patent number: 7378319
Abstract: A method of forming double gate dielectric layers composed of an underlying oxide layer and an overlying oxy-nitride layer is provided to prevent degradation of gate dielectric properties due to plasma-induced charges. In the method, the oxide layer is thermally grown on a silicon substrate under oxygen gas atmosphere to have a first thickness, and then the oxy-nitride layer is thermally grown on the oxide layer under nitrogen monoxide gas atmosphere to have a second thickness smaller than the first thickness. The substrate may have a high voltage area and a low voltage area, and the oxide layer may be partially etched in the low voltage area so as to have a reduced thickness. The oxy-nitride layer behaves like a barrier, blocking the inflow of the plasma-induced charges.

  • Patent number: 7379415
Abstract: The present invention relates to a head for recording/reading optical data and method of manufacturing the same. The present invention completely buries an aperture with a material a third non-linear coefficient of which is great in order to induce self-focusing. Thus, the present invention can reduce the amount of beam by about one half wavelength and focus the beam in a parabolic shape having almost no optical loss. Therefore, the present invention can improve the transmissivity of the probe by several hundreds times compared to a conventional optical fiver probe, by effectively exciting a near-field scanning optical microscopy for the aperture at an end portion of the probe.

  • Patent number: 7378267
Abstract: A method for producing L-threonine using a microorganism is provided. In the method, the threonine dehydratase (tdc) gene existing in the genomic DNA of the microorganism is partially deactivated using a recombination technique. For a microorganism strain with enhanced activity of threonine operon-containing enzymes and the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (ppc) gene, the tdc gene engaged in one of the four threonine metabolic pathways is specifically deactivated, thereby markedly increasing the yield of L-threonine.

  • Patent number: 7379073
Abstract: A method of restoring RGB gray scale data for maintaining a sharpness of a screen and reducing a size of a memory is disclosed. The RGB gray scale data having M bits are truncated to generate a first RGB gray scale data having N bits, M being a positive integer and N being an integer less than M. RGB gray scale data information is generated based on a bit information of the first RGB gray scale data. A bit value of a MSB of the first RGB gray scale data is compared with a value of a dither table based on the RGB gray scale data information to generate a comparison value, when a bit value of at least one bit of the first RGB gray scale data is different from other bit values of the first RGB gray scale data. The first RGB gray scale data are compensated based on the RGB gray scale data information and the comparison value. Thus, the sharpness of a screen may be maintained and the size of the memory may be reduced.
