Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus of recording a multi-channel data stream on a recording medium in such a manner that substreams of digital channels constituting the multi-channel data stream can be distinguished each other in reproduction. The present recording method separates a multi-channel stream composed of substreams belonging to a plurality of channels into individual substreams, records the individual substreams separately by channel in plural stream objects allocated in a recording medium, creates a piece of search information every a substream contained in the recorded multi-channel stream, and records the created plural pieces of search information on the recording medium. The present method makes it possible to selectively search and reproduce each substream among a multi-channel stream recorded on a recording medium, thereby improving use convenience of a recording machine such as a digital video recorder.

Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus of recording digital data stream on a recording medium such as a high-density digital versatile disk. The present recording method searches received digital data stream containing video signals for each picture section, packetizes a data section including at least one picture section found in the searching process into a PES (Packetized Elementary Stream) packet, slices the PES packet to make the sliced data pieces to a plurality of transport packets, and writes the plurality of transport packets within a stream object unit if the stream object unit has a space enough to store the plurality of transport packets, or from head point of a next stream object unit if not. Therefore, the head of each stream object unit is aligned with start of an arbitrary picture, thereby improving random accessibility of A/V data stream recorded on a recording medium.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of writing audio data to a rewritable recording medium as grouping the written audio data into each Audio Object Unit (AOBU). This method changes AOBU grouping criterion such as time or size if a bit rate of input audio data being written to the rewritable disk is changed, and groups written audio data into each AOBU in accordance with the changed AOBU grouping criterion while recording. As a result, an amount of management information to be created for each AOBU is reduced remarkably even if the bit rage of input audio data is relatively low.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for creating and recording management information for searching recorded digital data streams is described. When a digital data stream is recorded on a recording medium, index information for pointing to the location of the time information corresponding to the first stream object unit of each stream object on a time information table is created and recorded. Alternatively, the index information contains the number of start stream object unit for the selected stream object. When reproducing or searching the recorded digital data stream, a stream object is found using the time information of stream objects and the recording location corresponding to a requested search time is found using the index information.

A data stream recording method according to the present invention, records data stream in a recording medium, groups multi-path stream section of the recorded data stream into a single stream object, creates time entries having location information indicating each boundary position between stream segments of different path wherein each time entry contains type information indicating whether related data stream interval is for multi-path or not, and records the created time entries.
