  • Publication number: 20120268525
Abstract: A continuous liquid ejection system includes a substrate and an orifice plate affixed to the substrate. Portions of the substrate define a liquid chamber. The orifice plate includes a MEMS transducing member. A first portion of the MEMS transducing member is anchored to the substrate. A second portion of the MEMS transducing member extends over at least a portion of the liquid chamber and is free to move relative to the liquid chamber. A compliant membrane is positioned in contact with the MEMS transducing member. A first portion of the compliant membrane covers the MEMS transducing member and a second portion of the compliant membrane is anchored to the substrate. The compliant membrane includes an orifice. A liquid supply provides a liquid to the liquid chamber under a pressure sufficient to eject a continuous jet of the liquid through the orifice located in the compliant membrane of the orifice plate.

  • Patent number: 8267501
Abstract: A nozzle for a drop ejector is shaped as a plurality of lobes adjoining a central opening region and extending along a radial direction away from the central region. Each lobe increases in width as distance from the central region increases. The nozzles include sidewalls that converge toward the central opening region of the nozzle, giving the lobe a teardrop shape. Because the central part of the nozzle opening is constricted the ink that is ejected pinches off in the center and provides several advantages such as straighter trajectory, shorter tails, better accuracy, smaller ink volume, and less satellite effects.

  • Patent number: 8210648
Abstract: A liquid dispenser includes a liquid supply channel, a liquid dispensing channel including an outlet opening including an end, and a liquid return channel. A liquid supply provides liquid under pressure from the liquid supply channel through the liquid dispensing channel to the liquid return channel. A diverter member is selectively actuatable to divert a portion of the liquid toward outlet opening of the liquid dispensing channel. • Patent number: 8205338
Abstract: A method of forming a multi-lobed nozzle in a nozzle plate. A mask may be used to pattern photoresist on the nozzle plate or for patterning a polymer dry film, for example, which is then used for etching the plate to form multi-lobed nozzles. The formed nozzle plate is disposed over a substrate having a chamber for fluid formed therein and the chamber may include walls for supporting the nozzle plate. The fluid chamber includes a heater over the substrate for ejecting fluid through the nozzle via rapid heating of the fluid. Continuous supply of fluid is provided by forming a fluid supply channel in communication with the fluid chamber.

  • Patent number: 8172364
Abstract: A liquid dispenser includes a liquid supply channel, a liquid dispensing channel including an outlet opening, and a liquid return channel. A liquid supply provides liquid under pressure from the liquid supply channel through the liquid dispensing channel to the liquid return channel. A diverter member is selectively actuatable to divert a portion of the liquid toward outlet opening of the liquid dispensing channel. A surface is positioned downstream relative to the outlet opening of the liquid dispensing channel and leads to atmosphere. A portion of the surface, when compared to another portion of the surface, includes structure that reduces viscous drag on the portion of the liquid that has been diverted by the diverter member such that drops formed from consecutive portions of the liquid that have been diverted by the diverter member travel with consistent drop characteristics.
