  • Publication number: 20100163316
Abstract: Described is a multi-path handwriting recognition framework based upon stroke segmentation, symbol recognition, two-dimensional structure analysis and semantic structure analysis. Electronic pen input corresponding to handwritten input (e.g., a chemical expression) is recognized and output via a data structure, which may include multiple recognition candidates. A recognition framework performs stroke segmentation and symbol recognition on the input, and analyzes the structure of the input to output the data structure corresponding to recognition results. For chemical expressions, the structural analysis may perform a conditional sub-expression analysis for inorganic expressions, or organic bond detection, connection relationship analysis, organic atom determination and/or conditional sub-expression analysis for organic expressions. The structural analysis also performs subscript, superscript analysis and character determination. Further analysis may be performed, e.g.

  • Publication number: 20090262997
Abstract: A method of obtaining a computed tomography image of an object includes determining linear terms and non-linear beam hardening terms in a pair of line integral equations for dual-energy projection data from inserting average and difference from average attenuation terms, obtaining an initial solution of the line integral equation by setting the non-linear beam hardening terms to zero, and iteratively solving the line integral equations to obtain one line integral equations for each basis material. Attenuation by the first basis material corresponds to a photoelectric attenuation process, and attenuation by the second basis material corresponds to a Compton attenuation process. The line integral equations can be inverted by an inverse Radon procedure such as filtered backprojection to give images of each basis material. The images of each basis material can then be optionally combined to give monochromatic images, density and effective atomic number images, or photoelectric and Compton processes images.

  • Patent number: 7593572
Abstract: Ink-parser-parameter optimization may be performed via parallel processing to accelerate searching for a set of optimal ink-parser parameters. Evaluators may parse pages of ink notes with different groups of parameters and may compute corresponding values for evaluation functions. Separate evaluation functions may be defined for the following types of ink-parker parsing engines: writing parser, writing/drawing classification, table detection, and list detection. A searcher may perform a grid-searching algorithm or a genetic algorithm to generate groups of parameters and may then pass the parameters to available evaluators for evaluation until evaluation-function values for a group of parameters satisfy a convergence condition.

  • Publication number: 20090003706
Abstract: Described is a technology by which online recognition of handwritten input data is combined with offline recognition and processing to obtain a combined recognition result. In general, the combination improves overall recognition accuracy. In one aspect, online and offline recognition is separately performed to obtain online and offline character-level recognition scores for candidates (hypotheses). A statistical analysis-based combination algorithm, an AdaBoost algorithm, and/or a neural network-based combination may determine a combination function to combine the scores to produce a result set of one or more results. Online and offline radical-level recognition may be performed. For example, a HMM recognizer may generate online radical scores used to build a radical graph, which is then rescored using the offline radical recognition scores. Paths in the rescored graph are then searched to provide the combined recognition result, e.g., corresponding to the path with the highest score.

  • Patent number: 7450125
Abstract: A method and system for compressing and displaying a digital ink trace. Raw ink data is smoothed, and sharp points of the smoothed line are found. Curve-fitting is then used to generate a mathematical expression that defines the line segments between adjacent sharp points. The ink trace then is represented by a backbone spline that includes the sharp points and the mathematical expressions for the line segments. Thickness information, such as pressure or acceleration information, is combined with the backbone spline to provide a compressed ink file that represents a contour curve of the original ink trace. A display module uses an algorithm to separate the contour curve into a sequence of straight lines. A set of pixels is then generated for the display of each straight line using a novel antialiasing method. The pixels at the ends of adjacent straight lines are aligned using a weighting algorithm.

  • Patent number: 7444011
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reconstruction of a region of interest (ROI) for an object using an imaging system is provided. The imaging system may substantially exactly reconstruct the ROI with a straight line trajectory. In the straight line trajectory, the ROI is not bounded or encircled by the actual trajectory of the source (e.g., no chords that are composed from two points on the source trajectory intersect or fill the ROI to be imaged). However, the ROI may be substantially reconstructed by using “virtual” chords to reconstruct the ROI. The virtual chords are such that no point on the trajectory is included in the virtual chord (such as one that is parallel to the straight line trajectory). These virtual chords may intersect and fill the ROI, thus enabling substantially exact reconstruction. Further, in reconstructing the image, the straight line trajectory may be assumed to be infinite in length.

Abstract: Exemplary methods, systems, and computer-readable media for developing, training and/or using models for online handwriting recognition of characters are described. An exemplary method for building a trainable radical-based HMM for use in character recognition includes defining radical nodes, where a radical node represents a structural element of an character, and defining connection nodes, where a connection node represents a spatial relationship between two or more radicals. • Publication number: 20080205761
Abstract: Exemplary techniques are described for selecting radical sets for use in probabilistic East Asian character recognition algorithms. An exemplary technique includes applying a decomposition rule to each East Asian character of the set to generate a progressive splitting graph where the progressive splitting graph comprises radicals as nodes, formulating an optimization problem to find an optimal set of radicals to represent the set of East Asian characters using maximum likelihood and minimum description length and solving the optimization problem for the optimal set of radicals. Another exemplary technique includes selecting an optimal set of radicals by using a general function that characterizes a radical with respect to other East Asian characters and a complex function that characterizes complexity of a radical.

  • Patent number: 7397950
Abstract: Electronic ink layout analysis systems and methods provide flexibility and efficiency in organizing, analyzing, and processing digital ink. These layout analysis systems and methods allow users substantial freedom in entering electronic ink into a pen-based computer system. Using these systems and methods, a user's input digital ink is not constrained by requirements that a user write in a specific screen orientation, that a user write in one specific orientation on all portions of a page, or that a user write using a specific minimum or maximum sized stroke. Rather, the systems and methods freely allow the user to write anywhere on a given page, in any orientation or size, while still enabling effective and efficient handwriting recognition and other processing of the input digital ink.
