Patent number: 4187273Abstract: A single sheet of standard grade plastic laminate material is bent at two locations to form it into a side wall and two end walls corresponding to the side wall and two end walls of a bathtub recess. Following forming, one end wall portion of the wall covering is loosely folded over the opposite end wall portion. Then, the partially folded wall covering is pushed endwise into a rectangular cardboard box having a normal thickness which is substantially smaller than the initial depth of the partially folded wall covering. The box with the partially folded wall covering inside is moved through a rectangular opening provided in a rigid mandril, sized to be substantially equal to the normal outside dimension of the box. The mandril forces the outwardly bulging side walls of the box inwardly and reshapes both the side walls of the box and the side and end walls of the partially folded wall covering therein.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1977Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Inventor: Melvin A. Patent number: 4187274Abstract: A mold for compression molding a plastic sheet from a viscous fluid provides more resistance to flow on the side of the sheet designed to be the underside than on the side of the sheet designed to be seen. This resistance to flow can be imparted by roughening the underside of the mold more than the top surface of the mold. The purpose for roughening one surface of the mold more than the other is so that the plastic mass will flow faster on the smoother side of the mold and carry bubbles to the rough side of the mold via a rolling action. By this method employing textured molds, the surface of automotive panels can be made having reduced surface imperfections.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1978Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Assignee: The General Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Sigurdur I. Arnason

Patent number: 4187275Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming shaped articles from glass fiber reinforced gypsum. An aqueous slurry of gypsum hemi-hydrate, water and glass fibers contains between 22 and 45 parts by weight water, 100 parts by weight gypsum hemi-hydrate and 3 to 10 parts by weight glass fiber. The slurry is deposited as a continuous ribbon on a moving, water-impermeable formable sheet which is pre-shaped and thereafter the slurry ribbon is pressed into a desired profile. The formable sheet and slurry ribbon are maintained in the desired profile until the slurry sets. Thereafter the product ribbon is cut transversely into lengths as desired. The formable sheet may be removed before cutting, or may be retained in engagement with the product ribbon during and after cutting to serve as a protective cover for the surface of the article. The process and apparatus are especially adapted to produce liner sheets for building construction panels.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1974Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Assignee: H. H. Patent number: 4187278Abstract: A polymerization process is carried out in at least two zones, wherein in one zone polymerization is effected in the presence of a liquid phase which is at least one liquid olefine monomer and in a subsequent zone polymerization is effected by contacting the solid polymer with a gaseous olefine monomer, the product from the first zone being subjected to a concentration stage to remove some of the liquid olefine monomer before the concentrated polymer mixture is passed to the subsequent zone for polymerization with the gaseous olefine monomer. The monomer in each case may be the same, for example liquid propylene in one zone and gaseous propylene in a subsequent zone. The concentration stage may be effected using a hydrocyclone.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1976Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries LimitedInventor: Michael L. Patent number: 4187280Abstract: Radiation-contaminated ammonium nitrate is heated in solution to about 100.degree. C. in the presence of finely powdered calcium oxide or lithium hydroxide. Ammonia and water vapor are given off leaving an alkaline or alkaline earth nitrate which can then be safely decomposed by calcination into a metal oxide and oxides of nitrogen. The metal oxide can be recycled in a continuation of the process. The oxides of nitrogen can be passed through water to produce nitric acid useable in dissolving oxides of fissionable materials and the ammonia may be used in aqueous solution to react with nitrates of nuclear fuel or breeder metals in the very process that produces the by-product ammonium nitrate. Thus, all by-products and reagents can be reconverted and recycled.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1977Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Assignee: Kernforschungsanlage Julich Gesellschaft mit beschrankter HaftungInventors: Paul Morschl, Erich Zimmer

Patent number: 4187320Abstract: A two-stage process for the preparation of a chewing gum base utilizing solid elastomer is described wherein the solid elastomer is initially subjected to high intensity mixing under high shear conditions to masticate the solid until a substantially uniform, lump-free mass is obtained; followed by the step-wise addition of an elastomer solvent and an oleaginous plasticizer with continuous high intensity mixing until a substantially molten, uniform mass is obtained. In the second stage of the process, the remaining chewing gum base ingredients are added, step-wise, with continuous high intensity mixing until a uniform blend of ingredients is obtained. The second stage ingredients, which may include a non-toxic vinyl polymer, a hydrophobic plasticizer, additional oleaginous plasticizer and an emulsifier, are added step-wise in a sequence determined by decreasing order of viscosity. In a modification of the process, the hydrophobic plasticizer or emulsifier may be added with the stage one ingredients.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: February 5, 1980Assignee: Warner-Lambert CompanyInventors: Edwin R.
