  • Patent number: 4744237
Abstract: A box-like frame member is formed by compressing an internally-pressurized tubular blank within a die having a cavity conforming to the final box-like cross section desired for the product, and increasing the pressure to exceed the yield limit of the wall of the blank to expand the blank into conformity with the die cavity. The blank is selected so that the final product and the die cavity have a circumference preferably no more than about 5% larger than the circumference of the blank, to avoid weakening or cracking of the blank through excessive circumferential expansion. The internal pressure forces the blank evenly into the corners of the die on closing and allows the blank to be confined within the die without sections of the die pinching the blank on closing of the die.

  • Patent number: 4744239
Abstract: Off-highway trucks generally rely on a suspension system which employs a plurality of gas-over-liquid type struts. These struts are critical to proper operation of the vehicle such that a single collapsed strut can have serious manifestations in structural damage, tire wear, and payload monitor accuracy. These consequences can be mitigated by an accurate and reliable strut monitor. Pressure type sensors are disposed on each of the struts and their pressure is monitored during three critical phases of operation. These phases include static, loading, and roading modes and each mode requires a distinct method for detecting a collapsing strut. The presence of a collapsing strut, detected by any of the three methods, is communicated to the vehicle operator whereby operation can be immediately suspended. The system avoids the serious consequences of vehicle operation with a collapsed strut by providing the operator with immediate and positive feedback on the condition of the struts.

  • Patent number: 4744240
Abstract: When determining the bubble point or the largest pore of a membrane or of a filter material, the membrane or the filter material is placed in a container, with the membrane or the filter material thus dividing this container into two compartments. Then, the first compartment is filled with gas, and the second compartment and the pores of the membrane (or the filter material) are filled with a wetting liquid. The pressure in the gas compartment is raised at least until the gas displaces the liquid from the largest pore. The bubble point is defined by means of the gas-compartment pressure then prevailing, or the cross-sectional dimension of the largest pore can be calculated. According to the invention, the gas-compartment pressure corresponding to the bubble point is determined by measuring a sudden increase in the sound intensity in the liquid compartment. The measurement of the sound intensity is preferably carried out in the ultrasonic range.

  • Patent number: 4744242
Abstract: The vibration of an end mill (36) is sensed by either microphones (42, 44, 46) or accelerometers (78, 80, 82). A time domain signal is produced by these sensors which is converted into a near-real time frequency spectrum. A certain frequency band in the spectrum is directly related to end mill vibration and certain frequencies in the band will change in amplitude corresponding to certain types of end mill wear. When any of the amplitudes in the band exceed a certain threshold limit the end mill is known to be dull.

  • Patent number: 4744243
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for detecting maximum cylinder pressure angle in an internal combustion engine. A crankshaft angle sensor detects a piston reference position such as top dead center (TDC) and the maximum cylinder pressure angle is obtained by measuring the interval between the reference position and the position at which pressure in the cylinder becomes maximum. Non-firing of the engine is detected and the position at which the motoring pressure occurring during non-firing becomes maximum is deemed to be the actual top dead center. The actual top dead center is used for correcting the output of the crankshaft angle sensor, enabling accurate detection of the maximum pressure angle. As the output error of the crankshaft sensor is substantially linearly proportional to the engine speed, the output error can be approximated as its average value or as a value obtained by interpolation.

Abstract: The transmission system especially for automobile vehicles comprises an input gearbox (P) and a main gearbox (B) disposed between an input shaft (E) and an output shaft (S) and interconnected by an intermediate shaft (M). The transmission system comprises a series of numerous progressively distribution forward running ratios and a simple control system. Reverse running is obtained by means of the input gearbox (P), which enables gear ratios of the same order to be obtained in reverse running as in forward running and further provides a supplementary forward running ratio at the top of the series of ratios. A gearing down mechanism (TL) may be added to the main gearbox (B) to widen the range of transmission ratios in both directions.

  • Patent number: 4744268
Abstract: A planetary system suitable for amplification of horse power by a single or multi-stage arrangement from a rotary power source. In a stage provided are three axially concentric elements, whose axes define the system axis, a braked reaction gear and two non gear elements that rotate at the same angular speed, the input carrier and the output lever. Driven by and on the carrier is an iso-planet whose gear element meshes with the reaction gear and whose non-gear element, a free floating rim isolated from the rotation of the gear around its center and carried around the system axis is adapted to mate with and drive the output lever in specifically selected position on the system radius that is radially perpendicular to a point of large tangential force of the torque on the momentary driven radius of the iso-planet gear element. Output lever driven by a large force renders a larger torque and therefore power than the power applied.

  • Patent number: 4744270
Abstract: A method of securing hard-metal, insert type, rock cutting teeth into the supporting structures of rock bits is described, wherein the thermal expansion characteristics of the materials of the supporting structure, and of the hard-metal teeth, with widely differential temperatures, are relied upon to relatively enlarge the dimensions of undersized retention bores formed by and within the supporting structure with respect to the dimensions of insertable rock cutting teeth, thus permitting insertion of the rock cutting teeth into the undersized retention bores. Subsequent equalization of the temperature of the assembly will tightly retain such teeth within the retention bores.

  • Patent number: 4744274
Abstract: A wax ring pattern machining tool which enables a goldsmith to create a precision machined wax ring pattern for subsequent casting in precious metal by the lost wax process. The machining operations on the ring pattern are carried out while the pattern is still a part of a wax ring preform tube. The machining tool may be employed to create circumferential grooves or channels on the exterior of the ring pattern or to reduce the diameter of the ring tube or otherwise shape it circumferentially. An indexing function is provided for securing the tool in a fixed radial position, permitting the use of a faceting tool for creating flat or beveled surfaces on the exterior of ring. Upon completion of the exterior design of the pattern, the tool is employed to size the ring and separate the ring pattern from the ring tube preform.

  • Patent number: 4744278
Abstract: The present invention is a rotary machining tool and a method of making it using an easily replaceable cutter element assembly. A circular saw is exemplary of a cutting tool which can be made using the present invention. The cutter element assembly comprises two portions. The first is an inverted, generally U-shaped clevis with spaced apart side portions that fit over the circumferential edge of a sawplate. The clevis has an upper portion which extends outwardly from the sawplate edge thereby defining a tooth retaining socket between the sawplate edge and the clevis. The side portions of the clevis are apertured to accept a pin for attachment to the sawplate which has a corresponding aperture. A buttress attached to the clevis normally bears against the leading edge of a gullet and prevents rearward rotation when in use. The second member is an insertable tooth having a head and an elongated tapered shank. The shank has a taper on its upper surface sufficient to form a self-releasing taper, usually between 3.
