  • Patent number: 4776162
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the manufacture of a glass fiber bulk strand roving which is made up of a multiplicity of strands, each of which is made up of a plurality of individual fibers, for example, 200 of such fibers. Each strand of the roving has a multiplicity of rather long, axially extending loops, for example, axially extending loops with a calculated length of at least 6 inches, and a multiplicity of shorter, unbroken, cross-axially extending loops that are formed in the axially extending loops of such strands. The axially extending loops and the cross-axially extending loops interengage and intertwine with one another to form a composite entangled structure. The roving which is produced by the method and apparatus of the present invention is made by a process that uses an array of inwardly projecting fingers to form axially extending loops in the strands and a spinner with an inlet that is positioned adjacent the fingers.

  • Patent number: 4776166
Abstract: An improved free piston power unit includes a pair of power pistons at opposite ends of a common power cylinder, wherein the power pistons are linked for reciprocation in unison in opposite directions. The power pistons carry a respective pair of compressor pistons disposed within compressor cylinders to generate a supply of compressed air or the like upon power piston reciprocation. The power pistons further cooperate with a respective pair of gas-containing bounce cylinders which provide pneumatic reaction forces to return the power pistons through a compresion stroke at the conclusion of a combustion expansion stroke. The bounce cylinders each have a relieved end face to provide an increased minimum bounce cylinder volume thereby limiting the maximum pressure and temperature to which the bounce cylinders are subjected, without requiring increase in the overall envelope size for the power unit.

  • Patent number: 4776169
Abstract: Geothermal energy may be recovered through an underground well drilled to a depth approaching the earth's magma by circulation of injected heat transfer fluids flowing along separate parallel paths within closed loops extending into the well. One or more of the injected fluids may be conducted by a heat transfer portion of the loop establishing a lower heat absorbing zone within the well exposed to superheating conditions at ultra-deep depths. Circulation of the fluid within said heat transfer portion may be prolonged to efficiently absorb heat and heat loss may be minimized by heat exchange relationships between the parallel flow paths above the lower heat absorbing zone.

  • Patent number: 4776172
Abstract: Known porous laminates of the kind wherein ambient atmosphere each side of the laminate is connected via holes and passageways, the latter lying within the laminate thickness in planes parallel with the faying faces, suffer from airflow energy loss which arises from the changes in direction undergone by the airflow while in transit from one side of the laminate to the other side thereof. The invention provides extra holes on the high pressure side of the laminate, over those points in the passages wherein the greatest change in direction of flow occurs, so as to re-energize the airflow which has reached those points via the relevant holes of the known arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4776174
Abstract: A refrigerant recovery device comprises a pressure vessel filled with packings, such as Berl saddles, that provide a large surface area for mass transfer. The vessel is partly filled with a refrigeration-quality oil. The pressure vessel is mounted on a stand and pivoted so that it can easily be inverted periodically for coating the packing material with the oil. A flexible hose connects the vessel with a refrigeration or air conditioning unit, and a shut off valve is provided as is a check valve which prevents out flow of oil from the vessel. The oil in the vessel absorbs the refrigerant, and causes its partial pressure in the vessel to be reduced, so that refrigerant vapor flows from the refrigeration or air conditioning unit into the vessel. After the refrigerant has been absorbed, the valve can be closed, and the vessel returned to a central site for reclamation.
