  • Patent number: 4912815
Abstract: A clamp assembly for securing the ends of longitudinal tensile load-bearing elements comprises a pair of rings having complementary tapered surfaces. When assembled, one ring seats coaxially inside the other ring and the elements are gripped between the tapered surfaces. The outer, tapered surface of the inner ring is roughened and embedded in the surface of the elements so that load on the elements acts preferentially to draw the inner ring more tightly against the inner, tapered surface of the outer ring. An outer collar engages the outer ring with a flange to retain the assembly. The assembly finds particular application as an armour clamp for a submarine telecommunications cable.

  • Patent number: 4912822
Abstract: An integrated scanning tunneling microscope and an integrated piezoelectric transducer and methods for making both. The device consists of one or two arm piezoelectric bimorph cantilevers formed by micromachining using standard integrated circuit processing steps. These cantilevers are attached to the substrate at one area and are free to move under the influence of piezoelectric forces which are caused by the application of appropriate voltages generated by control circuitry and applied to pairs of electrodes formed as an integral part of the bimorph cantilever structure. The electric fields caused by the control voltages cause the piezoelectric bimorphs to move in any desired fashion within ranges determined by the design. The bimorph cantilevers have tips with very sharp points formed thereon which are moved by the action of the control circuit and the piezoelectric bimorphs so to stay within a very small distance of a conducting surface.

  • Patent number: 4912843
Abstract: A method for repairing interconnect interruptions with congruent preforms. Congruent preforms that bridge an interconnect interruption are utilized for repairing interconnects whose width lies in the range from 50 through 70 .mu.m and whose course is fashioned meander-like. Interconnects having a width of about 150 .mu.m can be repaired with previous repair methods. Due to miniaturization of the interconnects, a special method for monitoring the congruent alignment between the preform and the interconnect at the location of the interruption as well as for monitoring the symmetrical bridging of an interconnect interruption is needed. This monitoring method occurs by monitoring with video camera, whereby the location of the interconnect interruption and the environment thereof, a preform that is congruent therewith, and the positioning of this preform relative to the interconnect interruption are viewed at different positions.

Abstract: A tool for use in establishing a precise level line or plumb line or line for alignment uses a visible laser diode for projecting the line. The tool is relatively small and compact, drives the laser diode using batteries contained in the tool, and includes tilt compensation for use on surfaces which are not level, up to about 5.degree. off level, for still delivering a truly plumb or truly horizontal beam. A manual selector device is provided for shifting the beam from a vertical orientation to a horizontal orientation when desired. Specific forms of tilt compensation apparatus are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4912852
Abstract: A viewing apparatus for the purpose of separating a particular view from its surroundings and for the purpose of identifying the distance of the viewed object is disclosed. A viewing apparatus that attaches to and is used in conjunction with firearms weaponry is disclosed. The apparatus is characterized by an enclosed and elongated see through hooded opening attached directly to said firearms weaponry and is used to direct and aid open sight viewing of a distant object by blocking out immediate surroundings and thereby separating the view of said object from its immediate surroundings. The apparatus is affixed with a calibrated scale designed to measure distance of a distant object according to its height. The apparatus can be affixed with additional apparatus for precise windage and elevation adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4912853
Abstract: A reticle plate provided with a reticle and three concentric circles of ving diameter and methods of use thereof, the invention allows a user to establish a north-oriented or south-oriented line by alignment of selected circumpolar stars with the circles. The circles are located on the reticle plate in positions determined by angles which exist between the celestial north (or south) pole and the particular low-magnitude circumpolar stars chosen as sighting points, the radii of the circles being directly proportional to the objective lens focal length of the theodolite or optical instrument within which the plate is used. A first method of the invention allows unambiguous location of the north or south pole by alignment of each of three selected stars with one each of the three circles. A second method provides data to a user sufficient to locate the pole by alignment of innermost and outermost circles respectively with one each of two of the selected stars.

  • Patent number: 4912854
Abstract: The liquid indicating leveling device consists of a modular unit having four walls each at 90.degree. to one another, the inside surfaces of the walls having a flat non-reflective white surface together with a white back wall and having an open viewing front defining a viewing chamber. The bubble vial is disposed in the viewing chamber parallel to the bottom wall of the viewing chamber so that the vial may be viewed through the open front for both vertical and horizontal leveling. Illumination is provided for selectively maintaining the light level within the viewing chamber at a level sufficiently above ambient for taking a bubble reading without glare or reflections from outside elements. A beam is provided in which the modular unit is mounted to increase the accuracy of the unit over a greater length for more accurate readings. A cross bubble device is provided for taking both vertical and horizontal readings.

  • Patent number: 4912855
Abstract: A drafting or measuring instrument, such as a caliper, divider or compass, has legs pivotally connected at one end and carries working elements at the opposite ends which may be moved between closed and opened positions. A thin case for releasably holding the instrument has an opening with an inner side wall conforming generally to the outer edge of the instrument so that the instrument may be placed in the opening. Formed on the respective opening side wall and the instrument edge are cooperating projections and grooves. The instrument may be manually positioned in the opening with the attaching projections being engaged by the retaining grooves so that the instrument is releasably held in the case until relative pressure is exerted between the instrument and the case to remove the instrument. An aperture may be defined at one end of the opening to receive the working elements of the instrument.

  • Patent number: 4912856
Abstract: A position measuring device for measuring the relative positions of two objects, wherein the two objects are machine components of a processing or working machine or a measuring machine for tools. The graduation of a scale connected to the first object is scanned by a scanning unit connected to the second object. The scale is arranged on a scale carrier so as to be slightly displaceable in a measuring direction. The scale carrier is connected with both ends thereof to fastening elements which, in turn, are rigidly connected to the first object. When the scale, the scale carrier and the workpiece have different thermal expansion, the scale carrier is connected at least at one end thereof to the fastening element with a translatory degree of freedom in measuring direction. The scale is biased at least at one end thereof by a spring element. The spring element is connected to the translatory movable end of the scale carrier.

  • Patent number: 4912857
Abstract: A cooling and exhaust unit for an IR reflow soldering machine is arranged to be mounted on the soldering machine after the last heating zone. The unit has fans which direct cold air downwardly on to the conveyor and this cooling air divides into two streams, one moving with the conveyor and one counter to the movement of the conveyor. An exhaust inlet is provided near the front and the rear of the machine, the exhaust inlets being connected through an exhaust chamber to an exhaust outlet. To minimize the amount of hot process air sucked out of the soldering machine into the nearer exhaust inlet an additional cold air inlet is provided, this being located intermediate the rear end of the unit (i.e., the end abutting the soldering machine) and the nearer exhaust inlet.
