  • Patent number: 5144787
Abstract: An elevator-type package wrapping machine which determines as by premeasurement the length of packages fed at a first level thereto, comprises a film gripper for initially drawing a fixed length of stretch film horizontally from a supply roll to a fixed stop position in the machine. While the film is held by the film gripper, a package which has one edge thereof at a predetermined distance from the fixed stop position is elevated to a second level above the level of the gripper into the film such that the package draws a first addition to the length of film drawn by the gripper, according to the height of the package. A vertically-moving horizontal bar is moved into contact with the film remote from the fixed stop position to pull a second additional length of film from the film source in accordance with the measured package length, if required.

  • Patent number: 5144789
Abstract: Process and apparatus for transporting stacks of blanks for producing (cigarette) packs. For the production of (cigarette) packs made of blanks (10) of thin cardboard, the blanks are delivered in the form of blank stacks (15), mainly in containers (cartons 16). Specially designed cassettes (32) are used for mechanically and mostly automatically conveying the blank stacks (15) to the packaging machines. The cassettes (32) are designed for holding the contents of a carton (16) of blank stacks (15). The cartons (16) are mechanically opened by a cutting unit (39) by way of cutting out a side wall (30). Special extraction units (59) pull out the blank stacks (15) through the open side of the carton and directly deposit these in an adjacent cassette (32). Centrally emptying the cartons (16) and mechanically transporting the blank stacks (15) by means of special inplant cassettes (32) result in a mechanized transport circuit for the packaging material.

  • Patent number: 5144790
Abstract: A high speed automatic packaging machine is constructed from standardized modules in order to reduce cost and standardize operational and maintenance procedures. The standardized modules include conveyor chains trained over sprocket wheels to form modules which may be ganged to maintain synchronization of operations. Various types of mandrels may be attached to the conveyor chain in order to adapt the machine to load different types of products. The mandrels experience significant centrifugal forces as they go around the path defined by the sprocket wheels. To prevent the mandrels from slapping the conveyor chain when it is traveling at high speed, a leading end of the mandrel is pivotly connected to the chain while a trailing end of the mandrel is captured within a slot which allows the mandrel to go around the sprocket wheel without departing therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5144806
Abstract: Gases, e.g., helium, are treated to freeze out impurities in the form of liquid and solids, and resultant gases are liquefied in a refrigerating unit. For automatic control of the freeze purification system, control of this process is responsive to two performance figures, namely, the liquefaction performance of refrigerating unit and the degree of impurities in the available crude gas. The purification process comprises an alternating sequence of purification phases A and regeneration phases B. The amount of gas used in regeneration phase B for liquefaction is additionally produced in purification phase A and intermediately stored in a medium-pressure buffer vessel. The sequence of purification phases A and regeneration phases B is continued up to a pressure P.sub.Mmax in the buffer vessel. Once this pressure is reached, the freeze purification system is regenerated; then, in an idle phase C, the pressure in the buffer vessel is reduced to P.sub.Mmin by liquefaction of the gas.

  • Patent number: 5144807
Abstract: There is disclosed a method for the removal and recovery of hydrocarbons which are contained within the air/vapor mixture in bulk oil or gasoline storage tanks using fractional condensation with cryogenic cooling. The air/vapor mixture is flushed from the tank with fresh air and passed, successively, through several stages of a portable condenser train. When necessary, the first stage of the treatment comprises a caustic wash stage where the air/vapor mixture is contacted completely with a caustic solution to remove sulfur compounds. The desulfurized air/vapor mixture is then passed to the first condenser stage which condenses and removes substantially all moisture within the mixture. The de-humidified, desulfurized mixture is then passed to an intermediate stage where the heavier hydrocarbon fractions are condensed and separated and is then passed to a final condenser stage where it is cooled to a temperature of at least -100 degrees F.

  • Patent number: 5144810
Abstract: In a multi-stage cold accumulation type refrigerator including a compressor disposed at an ordinary temperature, a helium gas as a common operating fluid to be compressed by the compressor, and one or more expansion chambers and cold accumulators of different temperature levels; a cold accumulating member of the cold accumulators is formed of an alloy or compound containing a rare earth metal, so that the efficiency of the refrigerator can be improved. Further, a heat generation quantity due to sliding resistance of a seal is set to be smaller than a theoretical generated refrigeration quantity to be obtained on the assumption of isothermal expansion in the expansion chambers, so that the refrigerating capacity can be improved. The refrigerator is applied to a cooling device for cooling a superconducting magnet, SQUID, superconducting computer, infrared telescope, etc.

  • Patent number: 5144815
Abstract: A temperature control system and a thermal valve for said system composed of a housing having a gas inlet port connected to the refrigerant return line and a gas outlet port disposed in a compressor interior. A helical thermostat metal coil is fixed within and at one end of the housing, the other end of the coil being free to rotate with change in temperature. The thermostat metal for the coil is preferably chosen so that no movement thereof takes place until some predetermined temperature is reached, at which temperature rotation of the free coil end commences. The free coil end, either along or in conjunction with a baffle or the like, normally blocks the gas inlet port and prevents refrigerant gas from entering the housing and passing therethrough onto the compressor motor.

  • Patent number: 5144817
Abstract: A yarn feed assembly for circular knitting machines for presenting one or more yarns chosen from a plurality of available yarns into the needle path under the control of a microprocessor. An arcuately movable sector-shaped yarn guide includes a plurality of openings therein for positioning a plurality of yarns in spaced parallel position with each other. A toggle clamp for each yarn located downstream from the yarn guide keeps the yarns taut in their normal stored position. To select a yarn for feeding to the feed station, a transfer arm selects the yarn positioned in a pickup position by the yarn guide. As the transfer arm begins to move, the corresponding toggle clamp releases, and the yarn is then fed onto its yarn feed location.
