Abstract: In order to adapt a gas-infrared radiator (a radiant burner) to operating conditions in a particularly efficient manner, the energy delivered is reduced by intermittently reducing a controlled supply of gas so that the energy delivery is below about 40% or even less of the maximum energy delivery of the infrared radiator, and a flame supplied separately from the controlled gas supply is maintained in the combustion chamber of the gas-infrared radiator, at least when operating in the aforementioned range. This is achieved more particularly by providing at least one nozzle (22) for a pilot light, directed towards the combustion chamber (4).
Abstract: A system for storing chemical energy comprises first and second vessels, the first containing a liquid solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, halide, or thiocyanate, or ammonium halide or thiocynate at an initial concentration of between about 30% to abotu 80%, by weight, the second vessel containing liquid, a space about the liquid in each vessel and a conduit communicating between the spaces having a valve for selectively allowing liquid vapor to pass between the spaces, means for heating the solution to a temperature above about 80.degree. F., means for cooling the liquid to a temperature below about 55.degree. F., and heat exchange means for transferring heat from the heated solution and for transferring heat to the cooled liquid. Water is the preferred liquid although ammonia, lower alcohols, and polyols such as glycerol, glycols, polyglycols, glycol ethers, lower aliphatic amines and alkanol amines, and mixtures thereof, may be used.
Abstract: A belt tensioner having a sleeve bearing pivotally mounting a pivoted structure on a fixed structure for spring pressed movement between first and second positions. The sleeve bearing is larger than and surrounds a ball bearing assembly rotatably mounting a pulley on the pivoted structure. The pulley has a cantilevered rim which axially overlaps and annularly surrounds the sleeve bearing. One of the structures and the sleeve bearing have slidably interengaging surfaces which are compressed together by the belt load force in the pivoted structure and the reactionary force acting in the fixed structure so as to provide a damping torque resistance to the pivotal movement of the pivoted structure which prevents movements resulting from dynamic changes in the belt load force within a range. The arrangement is such that independent vibrational forces instantaneously release the damping torque resistance to permit instantaneous movements otherwise prevented.
Abstract: A method for the treatment of atherosclerosis in a mammal by destruction of atheromatous plaque is disclosed. The disclosed method includes injecting a hematoporphyrin into the mammal for selective uptake into the atheromatous plaque, and delivering light to the diseased vessel so that the light activates the hematoporphin for lysis of the plaque. The preferred method utilizes a balloon catheter equipped with flexible optical fibers for transmission of light from an external source for illumination of the interior of the inflated balloon. By inflation of the balloon, the opaque blood between the balloon and the atheromatous plaque is displaced to facilitate activation of the hematoporphyrin. The balloon may be illuminated and inflated and deflated in a cycle responsive to the patient's pulse so as to minimize interference with blood flow.
Abstract: An artificial habitat for aquatic .[.animals.]. .Iadd.worms .Iaddend.includes a frame defining an opening surrounded by the frame, a screen attached to the frame and covering the opening for supporting aquatic .[.animals.]. .Iadd.worms, .Iaddend.the frame being supported with the screen at a given level.[., and water being.]. .Iadd.such that the worms are partially above and partially below the water level. The water may be .Iaddend.circulated along at least part of the screen for .Iadd.supplying water to the worms and .Iaddend.removing waste from the screen.
Abstract: Composite moisture and oxygen barrier structures in the form of films, sheets, tubes, and bottles are described which are composed of foils of high density polyethylene and foils of polar oxygen barrier resins adhered to each other with a coextruded bonding resin composition composed of blends of predominantly high density polyethylene containing low levels of a grafted unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride and linear low density polyethylenes which are copolymers of ethylene with either octene-1 or butene-1. The preferred dicarboxylic acid anhydride is maleic anhydride. The oxygen barrier resins are preferably ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers or amorphous polycarboxylamides from condensation polymerization of aliphatic diamines and aromatic dicarboxylic acids.
Abstract: A wall edging system for strengthening the wall intersections of buildings replaces the conventional metal corner bead used on drywall joints. The principal element of the system is an extruded plastic strip having a thickened, arcuate central area and two outwardly extending flanges which are othogonally oriented to one another, so that the thickened central portion runs along the seam between the orthogonally intersecting walls, and the flanges extend outwardly along the thickened central portion to be nailed into the drywall to secure the strip to the edge. Means is provided for providing a purchase for the mud that is applied over the flanges, and in addition to the strip there are other pieces defining two-leg and three-leg inside and outside corners, these pieces having tongues extending from each of the legs which slip beneath the central, thickened portions of the adjacent linear strips to provide a secure meeting at the corner.

Abstract: A protective glove pad for use by a baseball player configured to be positioned between the palm of the player's hand and the interior of a baseball glove to protect the palm of the hand from injury when catching a baseball comprising an enlarged palm pad portion of graduated thickness having an elongated finger pad portion extending outwardly therefrom to selectively position and retain the protective glove pad in the baseball glove.
Abstract: An ear muff device is arranged to include a resilient band, with the band of a generally semi-circular configuration of resilient construction, including a glove-shaped member at each end thereof, wherein each glove-shaped member is arranged to receive an ear of an individual in surrounding relationship relative to the ear to impart warmth to the ear in use. A modification of the invention includes audio conduit structure directed through the glove members to direct and ease audio hearing of an individual in use of the organization.
Abstract: The present invention provides a female garment with an infolding or cleft at the surface level of the labia majora to subtly define the contours of the external female genitalia. The linear infolding is in the sagittal plane of the body and has a first material which represents the outer cloth surface of the female garment and a second, firmer material which is attached to the inner surface of the first material so that the subtle contours of the external female genitalia are maintained throughout the infolding. Alternatively, the features of the external female genitalia in situ may be represented in a variety of female garments by utilizing first and second layers where the first layer constitutes material of the female garment and the second layer constitutes material of a different color or texture from that of the first material.
Abstract: An improved portable urinal device is provided which consists of a structure for holding urine therein. A mechanism is for channeling the flow of urine discharged from a body of a person. An apparatus is for suspending the urine channeling mechanism above the urine holding structure. A conduit is for fluidly connecting the urine channeling mechanism to the urine holding structure, so that the urine discharged from the body of the person can go directly into the urine holding structure.
