  • Patent number: 5285688
Abstract: A system for detecting wood-destroying insects by sensing acoustic emissions generated by the insects as they feed. The system comprises two acoustic emission sensors, an amplification section, a signal processing section and an indicator section. The system comes into mechanical contact with the wood to be inspected through the use of a bolt which is inserted into the wood and attaches to an acoustic emission sensor or through the use of an adhesive layer which directly attaches an acoustic emission sensor to the wood. The acoustic emission sensors are electrically connected to the amplification section which is electrically connected to the signal processing section. The signal processing section is capable of distinguishing between insect-caused acoustic emissions and noise-caused acoustic emissions detected by the acoustic emission sensors. The results of the signal processing section are sent to the indicator section.

  • Patent number: 5285694
Abstract: An apparatus for selection and engagement of selectable gear ratios in a change speed transmission is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a shaft mounted in a housing, a plurality of shift forks, and a shift plate. Each of the shift forks is axially movable along the shaft. Each of the shift forks also has a projection extending therefrom. The shift plate has a plurality of first patterns therethrough. Each first pattern includes axial and transverse pathways arranged to receive a corresponding projection such that when one of the projections is not aligned in an axial pathway of one of the first patterns in response to lateral movement of a shifting actuator, the other projections are aligned in axial pathways similarly located in the other first patterns. Subsequent axial movement of the shifting actuator imparts movement to only one shift fork to engage the desired gear.

  • Patent number: 5285699
Abstract: The maximum safe operating speed or flywheels and shafts made of low tensile strength material is often determined by the speed at which radial tensile stress exceeds a radial tensile stress limit for the material. Circumferentially wound fiber composite material, for example, has a relatively low tensile strength along the radial direction perpendicular to the fibers. To increase the maximum safe operating speed, it is therefore desirable to form a fiber composite flywheel or shaft with radial compressive prestress. Such a prestressed flywheel or shaft has an outer annulus and an inner cylinder disposed in the outer annulus, and an annular layer of solidified bonding agent within an annular region between the outer annulus and the inner cylinder, wherein the outer annulus and the inner cylinder include substantial radial prestress induced by the bonding agent. The rim portion of a flywheel, for example, is formed from an outer ring (the annulus) and an inner ring (the cylinder, which is hollow in this case).

  • Patent number: 5285701
Abstract: A bicycle is provided that has a frame with a seat tube and a down tube aligned in the same plane, a chain stay rail, a free wheel mechanism and a crank hub. The bicycle is improved by having an enlarged crank sprocket rotatable in a plane substantially parallel to bike frame and able to provide a gear ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 with respect to the free wheel mechanism. The crank sprocket is stabilized to prevent it from wobbling and to maintain its rotation in a parallel plane. The crank sprocket is also extended away from the hub to allow the crank sprocket to rotate without coming in contact with the chain stay rail. Preferably, the crank sprocket can provide a gear ratio of 6.5 to 1 with respect to the free wheel mechanism and has a plane of rotation located at about the center of the axial width of the free wheel mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5285702
Abstract: An extendible handle for a tool to permit the user to increase the leverage applied by the tool. The extendible handle assembly has an inner handle member with a bushing affixed to its outer end. An outer handle member slides over the inner handle member and the outer handle member is hollow and contacts the bushing at the end of the internal handle. A bushing is also affixed to the inner end of the outer handle so that the handle cannot extend past the bushing on the inner handle. An air tight rearward air chamber is positioned between the outer end of the outer handle and an airtight forward chamber is formed between the internal bushing and the tool and bushing. An air passageway is provided along the internal bushing so that as the outer handle is moved in or out, this movement is damped by the necessity of air having to pass through the air passage in the internal bushing.

  • Patent number: 5285705
Abstract: A beverage mixing apparatus such as a coffee grinding and brewing apparatus is provided with an operative cycle which includes the transportation of a predetermined amount of a solid component of a beverage mixture from a storage compartment to and through a passageway into a mixing chamber wherein the liquid component of the beverage is mixed with the solid component. The apparatus further comprises a valve assembly associated with the passageway and having a plate movable between a closed position and an open position. The plate defines an opening which registers with the passageway when the plate is in the open position. A solenoid is connected to the plate for moving the plate between its open and closed positions. When the plate is in its open position the solid component can be moved from the storage chamber to the mixing chamber. In the closed position, the plate prevents moisture from the mixture from moving to the storage chamber through the passageway.

  • Patent number: 5285707
Abstract: A machine for cutting tires into a plurality of elongated strips includes parallel cutting shafts having a plurality of cutting wheels mounted for rotation therewith. The cutting wheels are separated by annular spacers on the cutting shafts. A spacer comber partially encircles each annular spacer and has a lower portion having a rounded surface to minimize surface contact between the elongated strips and the spacer comber. After the side cutting edges of each cutting wheel becomes worn, the cutting wheels can be sharpened by surface grinding which narrows the cutting wheel. Each annular spacer and spacer comber are also narrowed by respective corresponding surface grinding of the side surfaces thereof. The machine is overhauled, after the surface grinding and the corresponding surface grinding, by the addition of at least one of each cutting wheel, annular spacer and spacer comber on each cutting shaft.

  • Patent number: 5285710
Abstract: An adjustable bridge assembly for a stringed musical instrument utilizes individual adjustment blocks, one beneath each string, each fitted with a saddle screw having at its upper end a guidance groove supporting the corresponding string. The guidance groove may be shaped to accommodate different sized strings. The blocks, configured with elongated slots near each end engaged by screw fasteners, may be adjustably positioned prior to being fixed in place, thus enabling the bridge support point for each string to be set individually for good intonation and true octaves. The saddle screws, engaged in holes which are threaded into the block at an inclined angle so as to support each string at a well-defined point, allow each string's height above the fingerboard to be set independently for a desired tradeoff between ease of fingering and freedom from string-to-fingerboard buzz at maximum playing amplitude.

  • Patent number: 5285711
Abstract: A method and apparatus for tuning a musical instrument. Measurements are made of the inharmonicities of three notes (e.g., F3, A4 and C6 in a piano). One of the notes (e.g. A4) is a standard note that is to be tuned to a standard frequency. The measured inharmonicities of these notes determine a slope of a tuning curve and a position to intercept the standard note frequency according to the following: ##EQU1## Y(p,N) is the cents deviation relative to the equally tempered scale of partial p of note N, F is a factor by which the inharmonicity increases per octave taken from the measurement, B(N) is the inharmonicity of note N, and B(STD) is the inharmonicity factor of a standard note (e.g., A4 at 440 Hz).

  • Patent number: 5285722
Abstract: A shutheight adjustment system incorporating hydraulic tie rod nut assemblies for dynamically altering the tensioning and compression of the tie rods of a power press. Each hydraulic tie rod nut assembly includes a cylinder with an inner sliding piston threadably engaging the tie rod. A pressurizing mechanism injects pressurized fluid within a chamber formed by the piston and cylinder. By increasing pressure within the chamber of the hydraulic tie rod nut assembly, compression between the press bed and press crown may be increased thereby reducing the press shutheight.
