  • Patent number: 5285598
Abstract: A rotating diamond core drill is contacted with a hard but brittle material, and by keeping contact relation with the material, drilling operation is continued to drill a hole to the material. Further, when a hole is bored, relative eccentrical motion is given between the diamond core drill and the material so that the whole inner circumferential surface of the hole can be contacted with the rotating diamond core drill, and drilling speed of the diamond core drill is reduced. Accordingly, drilling and cutting pressure applied to the material is reduced and no breaking-offs is generated.

  • Patent number: 5285626
Abstract: A drive system for auxiliaries associated with a main gas turbine engine. The system includes auxiliary turbines for pneumatically driving the auxiliaries which are in turn divided into groups. A high pressure supply is tapped from the main engine or starter system and fed to the intakes of the respective auxiliary turbines. Controllers are associated with each of the auxiliary turbines to independently control the speeds of those turbines. Thus, the auxiliaries can be segregated between a group which is essential for starting the main engine, and a non-essential group. The former group is driven during starting while the latter group remains quiescent. Alternatively, the auxiliaries can be divided into one group mechanically coupled to the main engine and at least one other group driven by at least one auxiliary turbine.

  • Patent number: 5285627
Abstract: A gas and steam turbine plant includes a coal gasification plant, a gas turbine connected downstream of the coal gasification plant, a steam turbine having a water-steam loop and a steam generator connected downstream of the gas turbine. The steam generator includes a preheater connected to the water-steam loop, a heater of a high-pressure stage connected downstream of the preheater, and a heater of a low-pressure stage connected upstream of the preheater. An outflow line leads into the coal gasification plant and is connected to the water-steam loop downstream of the preheater, as seen in water flow direction. A heat exchanger has a primary side integrated with the water-steam loop between the low-pressure stage and the high-pressure stage and a secondary side connected parallel to the outflow line.

  • Patent number: 5285628
Abstract: A staged combustion apparatus for a gas turbine to lower the concentration of NO.sub.x and CO in the exhaust gases. Combustion occurs in a first and second stage, the first stage being sub-stoichiometric combustion and the second stage being above-stoichiometric combustion. Cyclonic combustion occurs in one of the first and second combustion stages and a swirling pattern of combustion occurs in the other of the combustion stages. Steam injection is provided to further lower the concentration of NO.sub.x in the exhaust emissions from the gas turbine.

  • Patent number: 5285630
Abstract: A system for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from a gas turbine engine is disclosed in which a portion of air in the air compressor is tapped and supplied to an inlet which introduces at least a portion of the tapped air into the primary zone of the combustion chamber. A control device is disposed between the tap and the inlet to control the air flow passing to the inlet. The inlet is located so as to inject the tapped air into the combustion chamber primary zone at the intersection of adjacent fuel sprays. The control device, which may be an adjustable flap valve or a three-way valve, may also be operatively connected to the throttle control for the gas turbine engine such that the control allows the maximum amount of air to pass into the combustion chamber under full power conditions. The control device is preferably mounted outside the engine casing enclosing the combustion chamber to allow easy access for assembly and maintenance.
