  • Patent number: 5285644
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for controlling a conditioned space to a predetermined set point temperature, utilizing a supply of cryogen. Cryogen is drawn from the supply in a flow path to provide a cooling mode via a heat exchanger disposed in the flow path. A vapor motor in the flow path, downstream from the heat exchanger, drives a fan which moves air between the conditioned space and the heat exchanger. Heat is applied to the cryogen downstream from the heat exchanger, after all cooling modes have been performed, to provide the desired fan horsepower, without interfering with a cooling cycle. A by-pass flow path selectively directs cryogen directly to the vapor motor, by-passing the heat exchanger, to provide air circulation in the conditioned space when the temperature of the conditioned space is satisfied.

  • Patent number: 5285648
Abstract: Low charge detection for a refrigeration system is accomplished using a differential pressure sensor which detects superheat at the evaporator exit. The differential pressure sensor includes a casing having a reference chamber containing a reference charge of refrigerant. A pressure responsive snap member is disposed in the casing so as to have one side exposed to the reference chamber and another side exposed to the exit pressure of the evaporator. The snap member is normally biased into a first position but snaps to a second position when the pressure differential across it exceeds a predetermined level. When a low charge condition exits, the evaporator exit will exhibit superheat. Heat conduction through the casing raises the temperature, and thus the pressure in the reference chamber. Thus the pressure differential which causes the snap member to snap to the second position is created.

  • Patent number: 5285673
Abstract: An apparatus for verifying the calibration of a flow meter contains a flow sensor assembly which has a flow tube defining an axial fluid path through the flow sensor assembly; an upstream temperature sensor in thermal contact with the flow tube; a downstream temperature sensor in thermal contact with the flow tube, the two sensors being operationally connected to a means for producing an output in response to a temperature difference between the first and second sensors; and means for asymmetrically transferring heat to the first and second temperature sensors independently of fluid flow through the flow tube. The calibration of the flow meter's thermal and electronic systems is verified by measuring the flow meter's output in response to a first asymmetric heat transfer to the upstream and downstream temperature sensors when the flow meter is calibrated.

  • Patent number: 5285676
Abstract: An apparatus, and corresponding method, for directly measuring air-fuel ratio of a combustion process, in an internal combustion engine is described. The apparatus includes a first electromagnetic wave sensor (105) that provides a first signal (107), representative of light intensity emitted at a first wavelength, and a second electromagnetic wave sensor (115) that provides a second signal (117), representative of light intensity emitted at a second wavelength. A ratio circuit (111, 121, 125) combines an integral of the first signal (107), and an integral of the second signal (117), and provides an air-fuel ratio signal, (127) indicative of the air-fuel ratio during the combustion process.

  • Patent number: 5285677
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selective detection of gases and vapors uses paramagnetic and electric dipole moments. An inhomogeneous magnetic field (31, 32, 33, 33') or an inhomogeneous electric field (41, 42, 43, 43', 44, 44') through the gas sample causes molecule enrichment in the acoustically sensitive range (34) of an ultrasonic resonator (1). The ultrasonic resonator has mutually opposed ultrasonic transducers operating as a transmitter (2) and a receiver (3). Because of the change in acoustic velocity, the molecule enrichment causes detuning of the ultrasonic resonator (1) and hence a change in signal at the receiving transducer (3). The method is particularly sensitive to the detection of oxygen.

  • Patent number: 5285678
Abstract: A method and apparatus for nondestructively testing sealed containers to proof test for seal leaks present in one or more container seals formed between mating parts of a container. The apparatus preferably includes a container rest or support assembly which holds a container being tested. The container support can advantageously include two corresponding testing head members which are movably mounted on a frame to clamp peripheral portions of the container to form a secondary seal outward of the primary seal which is being tested for leakage. The secondary seal creates a test chamber defined within marginal edge portions of the container which is adjacent the primary seal for applying a testing pressure thereto. Some of the preferred embodiments include a passage forming device for forming a testing fluid supply passage into the test chamber. The passage forming device can be an injection probe which forms an opening and injects a pressurized testing fluid into the test chamber.

  • Patent number: 5285679
Abstract: A method is provided to determine the concentration of an amorphous material such as blast furnace slag in a slurry such as drilling fluid, completion fluid fluids. A sample is annealed at a temperature between about 800.degree. C. and about 1000.degree. C. for a time period of about six hours to form crystals from the amorphous material, and the sample along with a known amount of a standard is then analyzed by X-ray diffraction. This method is particularly useful in determining the amount of blast furnace slag in a drilling fluid prior to conversion of the drilling fluid to a wellbore cement slurry by addition of additional blast furnace slag.
