  • Patent number: 5343729
Abstract: New technology for fabricating a one-piece cup-shaped can body having a protective organic coating as formed. Such can body is formed free of side wall ironing from can stock comprising flat-rolled sheet metal substrate precoated with protective organic coating and forming lubricant. A plurality of successive diameter-reduction operations are carried out on a planar blank and cup-shaped work product under tension during which side wall height is increased and side wall substrate is decreased in thickness to provide controlled uniformity in side wall substrate thickness over about 85% to about 95% of side wall height for such can body. The fabricating tooling provides for a preselected clearance between a punch peripheral wall and a die cavity internal wall in each of such plurality of diameter-reduction operations to achieve a desired decrease in side wall thickness as the precoated substrate is moved into a die cavity by relative movement of its respective punch.

  • Patent number: 5343731
Abstract: Provided is a novel semiconductor accelerometer possessing an acceleration sensing feature including gage resistors on beams and a detecting feature for abnormality of the acceleration sensing feature in which the novel structure is manifested. The detection of abnormality of the acceleration sensing feature is accomplished by comparing a voltage applied to a bridge circuit comprising the gage resistors with a predetermined reference voltage. The detecting feature essentially comprises a comparator and a generator. The comparator compares the voltage applied to the bridge circuit with a predetermined reference voltage supplied from the voltage generator. When the gage resistors has abnormality in the sensing performance, the applied voltage takes a higher voltage than that in the normal state. Therefore, the comparison of the above both voltages permits recognizing the gage resistors to have abnormality.

  • Patent number: 5343742
Abstract: A towing post provides a floating transducer platform on a carriage which arranged for motion in a vertical direction above the center of pressure of a model being tested, for example, by towing across or through a towing basin. Linear bearings are attached to a carriage and engage vertical tracks extending between top and bottom fixed plates of the towing post. One or more transducers may be attached, one above the other, between the floating platform and the model and thus extend through an aperture in the lower plate. Attachment to the model through a gimbal located at the center of pressure of the model allows separation of a measurement, such as of drag, from effects of position and, if desired, a wide range of motion through one or more degrees of freedom, such as pitch and roll. Effects of towing post effects on trim are also eliminated and improved restraint of other motions is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5343760
Abstract: A gas vapor sensor indicates the relative concentrations and flow rate of a gas mixture. Acoustic noise is generated within a closed chamber by the gas mixture flowing therethrough or by ambient noise sources. The chamber has a fundamental resonant frequency which varies with the vapor concentration. Acoustic frequency components of the noise corresponding to the resonant frequency of the chamber are sharply reinforced and dominate the acoustic spectrum within the chamber. The spectrum is detected and frequency filtered by a pair of dissimilar parallel filters to produce two attenuated outputs. The difference between the attenuated outputs indicates the resonant frequency and is a measure of the vapor concentration. The strength of the acoustic spectrum together with the measured vapor concentration indicates the flow rate of the mixture.

Preferably, a second loop, identical and parallel to the first, is supported by the same block. The block is channeled to serve as a manifold and interchangeable manifolds are disclosed for series and parallel flow through the two loops, respectively.

Abstract: On the upper surface of a flexible substrate, four displacement electrodes are arranged. A fixed substrate is arranged thereabove, and fixed electrodes opposite to the displacement elctrodes are respectively arranged on the fixed substrate. These displacement electrodes and the fixed electrodes form capacitance elements C1 to C4, respectively. A columnar working body is fixed on the lower surface of the flexible substrate. A bending is produced in the flexible substrate on the basis of an acceleration exerted thereon. As a result, capacitance values of the respective capacitance elements C1 to C4 vary. The capacitance values of the capacitance elements C1 to C4 are converted to respective voltage values V1 to V4. A component in the X-axis direction is obtained as Vx=(V1+V4)-(V2+V3), a component in the Y-axis direction is obtained as Vy=(V1+V2)-(V3+V4), and a component in the Z-axis direction is obtained as Vz=V1+V2+V3+V4.

  • Patent number: 5343766
Abstract: A micromachined accelerometer includes two capacitors comprising a pair of fixed capacitor electrodes and an intermediate movable proof mass serving as a common electrode which is displaced under acceleration to differentially vary the capacitances. A circuit holds the common electrode at a bias voltage and a switching circuit rapidly alternating between two phases separately connects the fixed electrodes to a main reference voltage and to ground during a first phase and to a common intermediate voltage during a second phase. A charge amplifier senses capacitance changes due to acceleration to produce an output voltage and an attenuating amplifier responsive to the output voltage produces the common intermediate voltage. A compensation servo circuit responsive to the output voltage generates the bias voltage which controls an electrostatic balancing force which is applied to the proof mass during the first phase to maintain the proof mass near a rest position.

  • Patent number: 5343771
Abstract: The invention is an improvement in a soil sampling tool of the type having a handle and a cylindrical sampling barrel with an aperture in the upper end. An ejector extends through the aperture and is attached to a plunger for urging the soil sample out of the barrel. In the improvement, the ejector and aperture define an annular clearance between them so that when a soil sample is taken (and the plunger thereby urged toward the barrel upper end), air can exhaust from the barrel. The plunger includes a boss which extends into and seals the aperture when the plunger is at or near its uppermost position. In that way, vapors of volatile organic compounds are prevented from escaping through the aperture. The tool also includes a cap for sealing the lower end of the barrel so that such vapors cannot escape from the barrel.

Abstract: A motor-driven cam disk having a radially projecting, eccentrically arranged crank pin which generates a first movement, for example the pumping movement of a bellows pump. A running wheel which is pressed by a spring force against the cam disk in a resilient manner is arranged in the radial direction on the cam disk. The running wheel serves to generate a second movement, for example the swiveling movement of a swivel lever. For this purpose, the motor-driven cam disk has two cam paths which are offset relative to one another in a stepped manner and pass into one another at two locations on the cam disk. The cam disk has a switch tongue to enable the movements generated by the motor-driven cam disk to be decoupled from one another.
