  • Patent number: 5367965
Abstract: An apparatus for sewing a tubular braid with an internal seam and simultaneously filling it with the required filler. A strip of covering fabric is fed to a sewing area from a first direction and folded over so that its lateral edges meet in the sewing area of a sewing machine. Immediately after sewing, the tube is inwardly inverted and pulled toward the direction from which the fabric came, thus being pulled through the folded but unsewn portion of the strip. A core filler material is fed from the opposite direction into the interior of the inverted tube as it is inverted to form the finished braid. The finished braid may then be coiled into a rug shape. Adjacent sections of the braid are then sewn together using dual stitches on the upper and lower surfaces of the rug, to ensure that the surfaces remain flat.

  • Patent number: 5367966
Abstract: An automatic edge sewing system and method for sewing together the edge of a plurality of parts in which the parts to be sewn are clamped together in a sewing machine having a reciprocating needle; the parts are mounted for rotation about a first rotational axis through the pans and for linear translation along a linear axis between the first rotational axis and the axis of the needle. The pans are steered about a second rotational axis parallel to the needle axis for adjusting the angular position of the linear axis about the needle axis. The parts are fed through the needle axis and the position of the edge of the parts proximate the needle axis is sensed; the steering and the feeding of the parts through the needle axis is controlled in response to the sensing of the edge position while the pans passively float about the first rotational axis and along the linear axis to enable the parts to be sewn accurately, automatically proximate the edges.

  • Patent number: 5367968
Abstract: Apparatus and a concomitant method for sewing seams in upholstered furniture such as mattresses. The apparatus contains a sewing machine located adjacent a conveyor belt which moves the mattress in a linear direction beneath the sewing machine, a presser arm for turning the mattress, and a fastening cylinder for temporarily attaching the mattress to the presser arm during the turning process. A single motor drives the sewing machine, the conveyor belt and the presser arm. As the mattress is moved by the conveyor belt at a first speed, the sewing machine sews a linear portion of a seam in the mattress. A sensor indicates when a corner of the mattress approaches the sewing machine. When the sensor indicates the approach of the corner, the conveyor belt is halted and the motor changes to a slower speed such that the sewing speed is slowed. Simultaneously, the fastening cylinder temporarily attaches a presser arm to the mattress.

Abstract: A tow cable includes a high density, high damping core of a material such as lead, surrounded by a layer of helically wrapped or braided strength fibers of a material such as steel, or alternatively, of aramid fibers. Over this is provided a layer of a resilient, deformable thermoplastic material such as polyurethane, to provide for movement of the subsequent data-bearer layer under strain, so that no strain is applied to the data-bearer themselves. Around this layer is provided a layer of helically wrapped (or braided) power and data bearers, the bearers including coaxial cables, twisted pairs, and fiber optic bearers. To ensure water-blocking, this layer may be enclosed in an extrusion of thermoplastic material, such as polyurethane. Around this is wrapped or braided a layer of protective fiber, of material such as steel or aramid fiber, and over this, in a roughly trochoidal cross-section, is extruded an outer layer of thermoplastic material, such as polyurethane.
