  • Patent number: 5367774
Abstract: The present invention relates to tools such as scissors, shears, pruners, and the like, which are resiliently biased to an open position, and which have a locking mechanism to keep these tools in a closed configuration. More particularly, this invention is concerned with tools having a pair of cooperatively engaging members provided with a resilient lock slidable within slots formed in these members. The lock includes a button having a yieldable head merging into a shank extending through the slots, the shank being joined to a cap. The head and cap have concavely shaped faces so that they are effectively in contact with the tool in respective annular regions of the tool, the area of these regions being proportional to the degree of compressive force applied to the lock.

  • Patent number: 5367776
Abstract: A can opener comprising a housing having a handle. A cutting wheel having a cutting edge for severing a can wall is mounted in the housing. There is a traction wheel having a gripping surface to engage the can. The traction wheel are rotatable and the axis rotation is substantially perpendicular to each other. The wheels are positioned adjacent and spaced apart from each other to define a gap to accept a can to be opened. One of the wheels is movable towards the other to engage and lock the can between the cutting wheel and the traction wheel. The cutting wheel then acts to sever the can wall and the traction wheel acts to move the can past the cutting wheel. There is a first thrust surface associated with the housing and a space, adjacent, second thrust surface associated with the movable wheel.

  • Patent number: 5367791
Abstract: A shoe sole insert has foam-filled independently compressible regions that extend through a midsole and beyond an outsole bottom surface so a particular region, when it strikes a traversed surface, is compressed vertically and expands horizontally against the midsole. In one embodiment, five groups of such regions are beneath the metatarsal bones and proximal phalanges. In a second embodiment, two transversely extending regions are beneath forward and rearward portions of the metatarsals. The rearward transverse region has a ridge that is farther from the outsole bottom face than a ridge of the forward transverse region. In another aspect, an array of regions below the tarsal and calcaneus bones is arranged so a region at the very rear of the heel compresses vertically to a greater extent than a lateral side region in response to the same striking force, so pronation tends to be corrected.

  • Patent number: 5367796
Abstract: A carrier is described that adapts an excavator with an dozer blade to a tote bucket or scoop. The excavator carrier rests on the blade at its bottom with the blade serving as the back of the carrier. Dumping capability is provided by pivoting the carrier on mounting pins between a mounting bracket added to the back of the blade at its top and a corresponding mounting bracket on the carrier. A backhoe on the excavator can be used to lift the front of the carrier causing the carrier to pivot on the mounting pin and dump material through the separation of the the carrier and the blade at its bottom. Side plates of the carrier extend beyond the back of the blade in a shearing action to maintain self alignment. Quick separation of the carrier from the excavator blade is obtained by simply removing mounting pins on which the carrier pivots and using the backhoe to move the carrier conversion away from the excavator or backing the excavator away from the carrier.

  • Patent number: 5367798
Abstract: A dragline bucket rigging includes at least one pair of components removably secured together by a connector pin assembly including a U-shaped spring retainer clip. The clip removably snap-fits beneath a protective cap secured to the outside face of one of the components and within an open-ended channel defined between the cap and the component face. Legs of the retainer clip abut the sides of the channel and nest within a pair of diverging slots formed one on each side of a retainer pin when the latter telescoped through an opening formed within the cap and into a connector pin hole in the component. The legs thereby act to prevent the pin from rotating or being removed axially from the hole and yet the clip can be easily removed allowing the pin to be removed axially to disconnect the rigging components.

  • Patent number: 5367808
Abstract: A battery-operated rotating sign employs a mechanically efficient speed-reducing mechanism and a power controller to reduce power consumption and, hence, increase battery life. The device is particularly suited to a ceiling-mounted, vertically-suspended rotating sign. A resilient power transmission strand extends from the vertical shaft of the motor to the sign which hangs from the bottom end of the strand. The power controller includes electrical circuitry having a timer which cycles between "on" and "off" periods. During the "on" period, the rapidly turning motor shaft winds up the resilient strand; and during the "off" period, the energy stored in the strand is released to the sign which turns slowly at the opposite end of the strand. Additional energy savings are provided by a photodetector circuit which disconnects the battery at night when operation of the sign is not desired.

  • Patent number: 5367810
Abstract: A magazine for a firearm includes at least one tubular member for receiving a plurality of cartridges. The tubular member is displaceably mountable on the firearm to permit displacement between an inoperative position for receiving fresh cartridges and an operative position for dispensing cartridges from the tubular member into a barrel of the firearm. A gate member is pivotally mounted at an open end of the tubular member and has a protuberance in the path of an end cartridge to inhibit ejection of the cartridge from the tubular member. The gate member co-operates with a loading mechanism of the firearm and is operable to displace the gate member out of such path.

  • Patent number: 5367814
Abstract: An apparatus and method of its use is provided for baiting a fishing line. A handle has a hole therethrough and a surface for gripping the handle. An elongate tube has a proximal end and a distal end and is fixedly engaged with the hole of the handle at the proximal end. The distal end of the tube has a terminal edge which may include a sharp edge for cutting through a bait. In use, a free end of the fishing line is threaded first through the tube, from the distal end to the proximal end, and then through the handle. The free end of the fishing line is then secured to the handle. A looped portion of the fishing line is then extended from the distal end of the tube and along the tube. The tube is then forced through the bait such that the distal end of the tube extends clear of the bait. The free end of the fishing line is then drawn out of both the tube and the handle.

  • Patent number: 5367816
Abstract: A spoon lure for fishing in fresh water or sea water, comprised of a wedge-shaped strip of highly reflective metal or any other suitable material that is bent to a radius along its length and width, with a rudder at the wide end of the wedge set at an angle to the length of the body and rolled in the opposite direction of the radius. At the narrow end of the wedge, or the leading edge, there is a hole for fastening a swivel device which in turn is fastened to a fishing line. At the wide end, or trailing edge, there are two holes for fastening a hook. One hole is on center of the wide end at the base of the rolled wing and one hole is on the corner opposite the rolled rudder. This configuration results in a lure that will spin through the water with a tight pattern when the hook is placed in the center hole. When the hook is moved to the corner hole, the action changes to a slower spin with a random dodging or darting motion, resulting in a much wider pattern.

  • Patent number: 5367818
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved retractable snag-proof fish hook system so that fisherman, whether trolling or fly fishing, may move their lure through any part of lake, stream, river, or other body of water without the hook of the lure becoming entangled and snagged upon underwater obstacles. The lure secures the hook within a chamber of the lure that is open to both the top and bottom surfaces of the lure. A biasing member forces the hook, which is pivotally secured within the chamber, against a stop wire so that only the rounded portion of the hook extends from the lure through the bottom opening. A barb located on the end of the hook is released from the chamber only when a fish bites onto the lure, pushing the rounded portion of the hook back into the lure, thus moving the barb end of the lure out of the lure and into the fish's mount, hooking the fish.
