  • Patent number: 6244391
Abstract: An ABS system brake system employs two axially slidable brake discs and four brake pads that are biased to have floating light random contact therebetween in the off brake position. The ABS controller operates the brake pads with about one half of the usual brake pressure and about double the number of the usual braking and release cycles. The floating axially slidable brake discs and four brake pads have reduced residual torque drag during the brake release cycle and have reduced hystersis. The result is operation at a higher frequency and with less amplitude, than the usual sliding caliper and fixed brake system, and a resolution of a modulating scale for cycling that is usually associated with a much lower coefficient of friction surface than is actually present.

  • Patent number: 6244393
Abstract: A disc brake caliper including a brake piston movably arranged therein. The brake piston is sealed in relation to the brake cylinder by a sealing ring, which is arranged in a circumferential annular groove of the brake cylinder. The sealing ring functions to retract the brake piston in the brake cylinder after a braking operation in order to provide a clearance between a brake shoe and a brake disc. According to the present invention, the annular groove includes a recess, which is arranged in the area of transition between a groove wall and the cylinder surface . The contour line, which defines the cross-section of the recess, starting from the groove wall of the annular groove, passes from a convexly curved portion over into a concavely curved portion. This permits ensuring an unchangingly constant clearance between the brake shoe and the brake disc roughly irrespective of the hydraulic pressure.

  • Patent number: 6244397
Abstract: Double-acting shock absorber, comprising a piston-cylinder shock absorber which is known from the prior art. During the reciprocating movement of the piston, which is provided on one side with a piston rod which extends to outside the cylinder, an interplay of forces of different magnitudes is generated in the different directions of movement. This is caused by the fact that the surface area on which the liquid situated in the shock absorber acts is smaller on that side of the piston rod which has the surface of the piston rod than on the other side of the piston. According to the invention, these forces are made substantially equal by connecting said other side of the piston to a compensation chamber of variable volume which essentially corresponds to the instantaneous volume displaced by the piston rod in the cylinder.

Abstract: This invention provides an improved diverter for a flat article/mail handling system which diverter includes a conveyor for moving articles through the diverter. A mechanism is preferably provided for minimizing contact between a moving part of the conveyor and a stationary part of a diverter platen. This mechanism may, for example be a bearing surface on the platen in a contact region between a conveyor pinch roller and the platen and/or may be a recess formed in the platen in the regions thereof underlying the conveyor. The bearing may be slightly enlarged so as to raise the pinch roller a very small distance above the surface of the platen, eliminating the need for the groove.

Abstract: A speed-increasing and accumulating conveyor chain includes a large-diameter mounting roller and small-diameter traveling rollers that are loosely fitted concentrically around a connecting pin through over an oil-impregnated sintered oil bushing concentrically. A lubricating oil is gradually discharged from the oil-impregnated sintered bushing, so that the chain can travel with a small chain-driving force as a whole while stably maintaining low friction coefficients at the loosely fitted portions between the connecting pin, the bushing, the mounting roller and the traveling rollers. The chain can, therefore, perform the speed-increasing function and the accumulating function by means of the mounting roller and the traveling rollers.

  • Patent number: 6244427
Abstract: A drive roller has a brushless D.C. motor with a stator or armature mounted on a fixed shaft and directly driving a 16 pole permanent magnet rotor mounted inside a roller tube. A motor controller drive supplies three-phase power to a Y-connected three phase winding having three groups of two coils, forming twelve electromagnets which drive the rotor. The modular motor is readily built in one inch increments to supply one lb-in of torque for each increment. The controller operates at a relatively low frequency of 15-75 Hz. Hall effect sensors provide feedback on motor speed and position. The armature laminations are relatively thick because of the relatively low power necessary to drive the motor and the resultant relatively low eddy currents present in the motor core. A 4.0 lb-in torque motor with a rotor and stator length of four inches will draw approximately 0.8 amps consuming about 15 Watts.
