Abstract: A method of obtaining a spectrum in a Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer includes the following steps: sampling a set of data while a movable mirror of the Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer performs a reciprocal movement, wherein the set of data constitutes an interferogram; judging whether the interferogram is reliable or not by comparing the shape of the interferogram with a shape of another interferogram or shapes of other interferograms obtained through neighboring measurement of measurements; accumulating the data of interferograms that are judged to be reliable; and constituting an absorption spectrum using a Fourier transformation method based on the accumulated data. Since unreliable data are adequately avoided from the data accumulation, the reliability of the accumulated data is assured, and an accurate absorption spectrum can be obtained.

Abstract: The invention features an interferometry system that uses a small angular difference in the propagation directions of orthogonally polarized components of an input beam to an interferometer. The orthogonally polarized components define reference and measurement beams for the interferometer. The angular difference allows one to distinguish between the reference and measurement beam components of the input beam and facilitates the suppression of at least some of the cyclic errors caused by interferometer imperfections.

Abstract: Interleavers are a useful tool in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to separate a signal with closely spaced channels into two signals, e.g. odd and even ITU channels, each with twice the channel spacing. Alternatively, two signals with a large channel spacing can be combined into a single beam with half the channel spacing. The invention relates to an optical interferometer using rhomb prisms as resonant cavities, which, when properly designed, provide the necessary phase shifts for interleaving or de-interleaving sets of optical wavelength channels. The present invention utilizes the differential phase shift between orthogonally polarized components induced by total internal reflection (TIR) off the surfaces of the rhomb prisms. Dispersion reducing techniques are also disclosed, including multiple rhomb interleavers and multi-pass rhomb interleavers.

A beam stop may be used with the anamorphic apparatus to define a portion of the region having a greatly reduced wavefront error that is subsequently detected or launched into a fiber optic. Furthermore, the anamorphic apparatus can be incorporated into an interferometry system to reduce errors associated with wavefront error and beam shear, i.e., non-cyclic non-linearities.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring ground height in front of a vehicle, such as a vehicle for clearing buried land mines, in which a scanning pulsed laser to used to scan along one or more lines in front of the vehicle, with such scanning being executed more slowly in certain regions where data is collected and more quickly in intermediate regions where data is not collected. The time of flight along those lines is measured, and using that measurement, the ground height calculated and stored, with the higher elevations being discarded as the representing the tops of vegetation and the lower elevations being representative of the ground height or elevation in front of blade. A dozer blade on the vehicle is then adjusted in response to the calculated height to position the blade for the proper depth of cut in order to effectively uncover and remove the buried mines.

Abstract: A fully digital pulse width modulator substantially doubles resolution in a laser printer b y outputting data to the laser on both the rising and falling edges of the clock cycle. A counter and the clock itself are used to select input to a multiplexer, and consequently, the data output to the laser from the multiplexer. A data selector code, generated b y concatenating the binary value of the counter and the inverted clock bitwise, selects which of the 16 bits representing a pixel to place onto the data line, so that all 16 bits are output to the laser serially and sequentially in eight clock cycles. By using both the rising and falling edges of a clock cycle, the clock speed of the device is effectively doubled, without increasing actual clock speed. Device resolution is improved simply and inexpensively without major modification of printed circuit boards.

Abstract: A method of color printing is described in which only two transparent inks are used to reproduce a source image The original digitally encoded image in red, green and blue colors may be initially adjusted for contrast, brightness, color balance, and tonal value. This is then converted to cyan, magenta and yellow encoding. The two of these channels which best represent the dominant colors of original image are then selected. The critical colors of the original image to be reproduced with reasonable accuracy are determined and spot colors that best represent these are selected from an ink palette The spot colors are assigned to the selected channels to which they have the closest color relationship. These two channels are next superimposed to form a composite image and their greyscale values are adjusted to produce an image most closely resembling the desired final image. New positive separations are then made and inverted to negative images from which printing plates can be prepared.

To identify the predetermined text and images, a first identification process generates a first identification result. Based upon the first identification result, a second identification determines a final identification result. The two-step identification process substantially reduces a rate for generating false results and increases flexibility in the identification criteria.

Abstract: A center of rotation O of a camera 10 is determined on an axis 45 passing through the position between pickup target objects A, B and the camera 10 in the direction from a lens 3 to a CCD 2. Before rotation (in a first state), an optical axis 30 of the camera 10 swings to the left with the point O as center and with an angle è with respect to the axis 45, whereas after rotation (in the second state), the optical axis 30 swings to the right with the point O as center and with angle è with respect to the axis 45. The pickup target objects A, B, C form images on a pickup face 2a, respectively. In order that the formed image b2, for example, of the image picked up after movement may coincide with the formed image b1 of the image before movement, the image after rotation is moved in the cross direction.

Abstract: An image reading apparatus is provided with an optical reading device for scanning a stationary original placed on a platen to read image on the original; a drive device for moving the optical reading device at the first moving speed and the second or slow moving speed; a detection device for determining a type of image data read by the optical reading device as either the first type, i.e. monotone data, or the second type, i.e. color data; and a scan control device for obtaining and storing image data while scanning a document at the first moving speed. A switching control device switches the drive device to the second moving speed when the detecting device determines the image data read at the first moving speed to be the second type.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for correcting a scanning error in a flatbed scanner, can minimize the scanning error due to deviations in position or scanning of a CCD (charge-coupled device) module by determining a scanning position, a scan region, and a scan rate for each flatbed scanner. The scanning error correcting apparatus includes a white shading plate having a black patch, a reading module for reading the white shading plate and the black patch, and a controller that compares information about the black patch read by the reading module with a predetermined reference value to correct the scanning error in the flatbed scanner. Thus, the apparatus and method can secure a scanning region in horizontal and vertical directions as wide as possible for each flatbed scanner and prevent occurrences of errors in a scanned image due to deviations of the CCD module.

Abstract: Deformation of a second optical carriage (B) due to heat is large on a (C) side where an inverter (31) is attached and small on a (D) side. A mirror supporting portion inside the second optical carriage (B) supports the mirror at one point on the (C) side and at two points on the (D) side. An angle of the reflecting mirror (8) depends on two protrusions on the (D) side where thermal deformation is small, and the mirror is supported at one point on the (C) side where thermal deformation is large. Thus, even if an angle of the mirror supporting portion (C) changes, the angle of the reflecting mirror (8) is not affected. Therefore, a change in the angle of the reflecting mirror (8) can be controlled to be small when temperature of the second optical carriage (B) rises during a reading operation, and decrease in reading accuracy due to thermal deformation of the second optical carriage (B) can be suppressed.

Abstract: An enhanced volume phase diffraction grating provides high dispersion, uniformly high diffraction efficiency and equal diffraction efficiencies for all polarizations across a wide range of wavelengths. The thickness of the volume phase material and the modulation of its refractive index are jointly established to provide equalization of diffraction efficiencies for all polarizations over a wide range of wavelengths. The equalization occurs where the S and P diffraction efficiencies are both at a maximum.
