  • Patent number: 6557249
Abstract: The present invention is a strengthened fiber optic cable and the process for inserting the strengthened cable into a duct. The invention consists of pre-coating a fiber optic waveguide with an ultra violet (UV)/visible light curable resin such that the resin buffers the fiber optic waveguide. The pre-coated fiber optic waveguide is then cured in an UV/visible light oven at a temperature at ambient or above. An UV/visible light curable resin is pre-heated to a selected temperature and the buffered fiber optic waveguide and the at least one reinforcing fiber are transported through a binding resin bath, the fiber optic waveguide maintaining linear alignment throughout the bath as at least one reinforcing fiber is disposed about the fiber optic waveguide. The resin coated fiber optic waveguide and the least one reinforcing fiber are then cured in an UV/visible light curing station so as to form a fiber optic cable.

  • Patent number: 6557251
Abstract: A semiautomatic method for digital feature separation uses a trained sample selected by an operator using a software “eye dropper” tool or a similar region-of-interest tool to sample features of interest on a stored digital image of, for example, an electronic component such as pads, bumps or leads of the component. Pixels from the sampled features are analyzed and plotted based on their color hue and saturation values or gray scale intensity values. The range of such values is chosen by a user. A second digital image is then compared to the sampled feature data gathered by the “eye dropper” tool. If the color and intensity values of the pixels from the second digital image fall within a user defined acceptable absolute value range, then the locations and values of those pixels in the image are saved.

  • Patent number: 6557252
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fabricating uniform splices for stranded cables. A joint for a stranded cable can be formed by inserting the ends of two cables into an electrically conductive splice band which, in turn, is inserted into a coil or inductor. The splice is fabricated by a process known as magnetic pulse forming, or magnetic pulse welding wherein a very large electrical current of short duration is directed through the coil or inductor from a charged capacitor bank. The resulting magnetic field in the coil or inductor induces a magnetic field on the splice band, compressing the splice band uniformly around the circumference of the two cable ends being spliced. In the case of magnetic pulse welding, the splice not only uniformly compresses the stranded cables, but a weld is also created between the inner diameter of the sleeve and the adjacent stranded cables.

  • Patent number: 6557253
Abstract: A connection component for making connections to a microelectronic element is made by providing leads on a surface of a polymeric layer and etching the polymeric layer to partially detach the leads from the polymeric layer, leaving a portion of each lead releasably connected to the polymeric layer by a small polymeric connecting element which can be broken or peeled away from the lead. Leads in a connecting element may be covered by an insulating jacket applied by a coating process, and the insulating jacket may in turn be covered by a conductive layer so that each lead becomes a miniature coaxial cable. This arrangement provides immunity to interference and facilitates operation at high speeds.

  • Patent number: 6557254
Abstract: Metallic track members having locking slots designed for receiving and retaining metallic stud members that contain construction aids enable the assembly of metallic frames used in the construction of buildings. A flat metallic strip is converted to a W-shaped metallic track member by a series of stamping, bending and severing steps. U-shaped stud members, manufactured in a similar manner are inserted into the track members and held relatively stable by upper and lower track members. An upper track member can be the same shaped design as the lower member or can be U-shaped with stud retaining means into which the stud members can slip-fit. The process for manufacturing is adaptable for computer aided manufacturing using data from the computer aid design of the building. Manufacturing equipment for the manufacture of the construction members is relatively light-weight and can be transported to the job site.

  • Patent number: 6557255
Abstract: A panel assembly for transferring fluids from one location to another comprises a panel structure with openings, a nozzle projecting through each opening and a sleeve affixed between the nozzle and its respective opening. Each nozzle includes a tubular portion with a connection end adapted for connection to a transfer conduit. The connection ends of the nozzles are preferably aligned with a common reference plane. Each sleeve has an outer surface with a length that is greater than a combination of a thickness of the panel and any deformity on the panel. With this arrangement, alignment of the connection ends with the common reference plane is independent of any deformity on the panel. A method of constructing a panel assembly includes determining if any defects are present on the inner surface of the tubular portion before installing the nozzle on the panel, and precluding potential inner surface defects during installation of the nozzle on the panel.

  • Patent number: 6557262
Abstract: A cutting apparatus having a pivotable blade holder includes a blade housing with an internal blade cavity with a blade opening to the outside of the housing. A blade holder adapted for removably retaining a cutting blade having a cutting edge is pivotally mounted within the housing for pivotal movement about a lateral pivot axis between a fully retracted position and a cutting position. The fully retracted position is such that the cutting edge of a cutting blade retained by the blade holder does not protrude through the blade opening to the outside of the blade housing. A cutting position is one in which the cutting edge of the cutting blade extends through the blade opening to the outside of the housing. A blade actuator accessible to a user from the exterior of the housing, when depressed, urges the blade holder into a cutting position while a biasing member normally biases the blade holder toward its fully retracted position.

Abstract: A hanging sign support has at least one housing supported by a mounting surface. The housing has an interior portion and a cord opening into the interior portion. A recoil mechanism is arranged to cooperate with the interior portion of each of the housings. A cord is associated with each recoil mechanism and has a distal end that is extendible through the cord opening and away from the respective housing. The distal end is retractable and biased by the recoil mechanism toward the interior of the respective housing. A connecting device is carried on the distal end of each cord for removably coupling the cord to a portion of a sign. Each cord, the distal end of each cord, and each connecting device can be constructed to retract into a portion of the respective housing when not supporting a sign. A spacer can be received over each cord and coupled between the respective housing and a sign supported by the cord to place the sign at a desired distance from the respective housing or the mounting surface.

Abstract: Firearms having scandium containing aluminum alloy components having alloying elements including light weight metals, such as magnesium, chromium, copper and zinc, heavier metals, such as zirconium, and other rare earth metals. The components have yield strengths of 82 to 100 KSI, tensile strengths of 88 to 106 KSI, 12 to 19% elongation's, and 7 to 10% reduction areas, and a method for heat treating the scandium containing aluminum alloy. The alloy is composed of 0.05% to 0.15% scandium, 7.5% to 8.3% zinc, 1.6% to 2.2% magnesium, 1.6% to 2.0% copper, 0.02% to 0.04% chromium, 0.05% to 0.15% zirconium, and 87 to 90% aluminum. A method for making the components involves exposure to solution heat treatment of 875° F. for an hours or two, followed by water quench, natural aging at ambient temperature for 24 to 72 hours, artificial aging at 250° F. for 24 hours, and allowed to air cool.

  • Patent number: 6557290
Abstract: The present invention is a light weight low profile variable shotgun bore choke that is easily manually adjusted by the user. To minimize the choke profile, the choke is connected to the shotgun through a threaded connection within the muzzle bore. External threads on a choke inner sleeve are configured to mate with standard threads found in existing prior shotgun barrel muzzles or with custom threads specifically formed. By using a threaded connection internal to the gun barrel, the overall radial dimensions of the choke are minimized thereby reducing the profile visible to the user. Weight is also reduced by a design which reduces radial dimensions and by use of light weight materials. The choke is adjusted by the user by manually rotating an outer adjustment sleeve with respect to an inner bore sleeve which is fixed to the shotgun barrel. The adjustment sleeve rotates through a range of choke conditions between two physical stops.
