Abstract: A section mill is positioned below a whipstock or other exit guide in a drill string assembly used to mill a section of steel casing below the whipstock and which as the section mill moves down and mills along the section of casing, causes the whipstock to be lowered down adjacent the milled-out casing and allows the drill bit and drill string to be run along the surface of the whipstock and into the earth formation. In an alternative embodiment, the combination of having the section mill below the whipstock is used in open hole operations having no casing. In yet another alternative embodiment, the section mill is positioned above the whipstock or other exit guide in a drill string assembly after the section mill has milled out in an appropriate length of the steel casing, the tubing string pulls both the section mill and the whipstock or other exit guide up to a position where the exit guide is adjacent the area of formation which has been exposed by milling along the steel casing.

Abstract: A packer cup for use in a packer assembly is disclosed. The cup has an outer layer, an intermediate reinforcing layer of meshed metal plies and an inner layer. The intermediate layer acts as a continuous, but flexible reinforcement to allow expansion and contraction of the cup as it is forced into the wellbore and to resist extrusion of the elastomers under pressure. The cup outer layer is preferably abrasion resistant and the inner layer is preferably chemical resistant. The layers are vulcanized into a unitary cup capable of resisting outer wear and tear as a result of insertion into the wellbore and internal chemical deterioration as a result of the harsh downhole environment.

Abstract: A perforating gun assembly for use in a subterranean well incorporates therein an electromagnetic frequency receiver coupled to a motor section which, in turn, is coupled to the mechanically actuatable firing head portion of the perforating gun. The assembly is lowered into a cased wellbore to a subterranean formation location, and a surface-disposed transmitter generates encoded electromagnetic waves through the earth to the receiver. Upon sensing in the received waves a predetermined frequency and embedded firing code, the receiver electrically operates the motor which, in turn, mechanically actuates the firing head to initiate the firing of the perforating gun. While the assembly is illustratively lowered into the wellbore on a tubing structure, a variety of non-tubing structures may be alternatively utilized to lower the gun assembly into the wellbore and operatively support it therein.

Each slip is connected to a slip ring, the slip ring also being circumferentially disposed around the outer surface of the body. At least some of the slip members are received upon a wedge surface, or cone(s). In operation, an expander tool such as a hydraulic setting tool acts upon the liner hanger, causing the slips to be expanded into frictional engagement with the surrounding string of casing. Abstract: An acoustic absorptive splitter consisting of two absorptive faces separated by a single on-quarter wavelength cavity support is disclosed as an equal substitute for a multi-layered splitter containing a central septum. This construction takes advantage of the reflective properties of the absorptive face sheets to support standing waves in the tuning cavities and in the duct cross modes. The utilization of these design principles permits significant silencer size and weight reduction. It also permits reduced splitter manufacturing costs by elimination of two layers of materials, difficult internal bonding and improvements in quality.
