Abstract: The high-purity aluminum sputter target is at least 99.999 weight percent aluminum and has a grain structure. The grain structure is at least 99 percent recrystallized and has a grain size of less than 125 &mgr;m. The method forms high-purity aluminum sputter targets by first cooling a high-purity target blank to a temperature of less than −50° C. and then deforming the cooled high-purity target blank introduces intense strain into the high-purity target. After deforming, recrystallizing the grains at a temperature below 200° C. forms a target blank having at least 99 percent recrystallized grains. Finally, finishing at a low temperature sufficient to maintain the fine grain size of the high-purity target blank forms a finished sputter target.

Abstract: This invention comprises a new process for developing high regression rate propellants for application to hybrid rockets and solid fuel ramjets. The process involves the use of a criterion to identify propellants which form an unstable liquid layer on the melting surface of the propellant. Entrainment of droplets from the unstable liquid-gas interface can substantially increase propellant mass transfer leading to much higher surface regression rates over those that can be achieved with conventional hybrid propellants. The main reason is that entrainment is not limited by heat transfer to the propellant from the combustion zone. The process has been used to identify a new class of non-cryogenic hybrid fuels whose regression rate characteristics can be tailored for a given mission. The fuel can be used as the basis for a simpler hybrid rocket design with reduced cost, reduced complexity and increased performance.

Abstract: The present invention is a porous structure formed with areas of porous material and areas of reduced porosity or non-porous material. Preferably, the structure is formed in the arrangement of a desired pattern of porous and reduced porosity or non-porous areas. The patterned structure is formed through the collapse of selected portions of the porous structure in the shape of the desired pattern to render these portions of reduced porosity or non-porous while the remaining portions of the structure remain porous. The use of heat and/or pressure is preferred to collapse the selected areas. The collapse may be aided by the use of a softening solvent or solvent/non-solvent mixture. The process can be applied to any polymeric porous structure of any pore size such as ultrafiltration or microfiltration, made by any process such as by track etch, stretching, casting, sintering or extrusion. Abstract: Disclosed herein is a separable manifold of hot runners for metal molds of injection molding machines and a method of manufacturing the manifold. The manifold is designed to be separated into an upper plate and a lower plate while having a flow channel therebetween. The upper plate is assembled with the lower plate into a manifold after inserting a channel pipe covered with copper plates in the flow channel. Thus, the manifold of this invention is easy to manufacture. In addition, it is possible to easily grind the flow channel of the manifold so as to remove angled corners from the flow channel.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for enhancing the heat transfer efficiency of a keel cooler by increasing the flow rate of coolant through the side tubes. Because the side tubes are exposed to a greater amount of fresh unhindered seawater, increasing the flow rate through the side tubes can have the effect of enhancing the overall heat transfer capability of the keel cooler. The invention relates to using apertures leading to the side tubes from the header and vice versa that are substantially arrow-shaped in design, wherein various benefits that lead to an increased flow rate are provided. The aperture is preferably symmetrically shaped so that a single die can be used to cut the aperture onto both side walls of the header.

Abstract: Axial flow fan propellers are provided with a roughened portion along the trailing edge of the fan blades on the pressure side of the blade to minimize tonal acoustic emissions generated by laminar boundary layer vortex shedding. The roughened portion may be provided by trip surfaces formed in the blades, by strips of abrasive material adhered to the blades along the trailing edges, respectively, by parallel or cross-hatched serrations in the blades or by upturned or offset trailing edges of the blades. The height of the roughened portion should be about equal to the boundary layer thickness of air flowing over the blade surfaces during operation of the fan. The fan propellers are particularly advantageous in heat exchanger applications, such as residential air conditioning system condenser units.

Abstract: The heat exchanger according to the present invention includes a heat exchanger component in which a fluoride layer 10 is formed at the surface layer portion. It is preferable that the fluoride layer 10 falls within the range of from 2 nm to 10 &mgr;m in thickness. It is preferable that the component is at least one of a fin and a plate. Furthermore, it is preferable that the fluoride layer 10 is formed on a substrate via an intermediate layer 2. It is preferable that the intermediate layer 2 includes an anodized oxide layer 3 and/or a nickel plated layer 4. The heat exchanger is excellent in corrosion resistance against water, vapor and the like The heat exchanger is preferably used, especially, for a fuel cell.

Abstract: The invention relates to a heat exchanger, particularly of cross-current design, through which at least two separate media can flow. It comprises plates which are stacked on one another and which are spaced apart from one another in some areas and are in contact with one another in other areas, so that flow paths are formed between respectively adjacent plates in a heat exchange region. The plates have apertures adjacent to the heat exchange region, and the plates are spaced apart from one another by means of shaped-out portions of the plates. Areas succeeding one another about the circumference of the plates have apertures, and these areas are alternately shaped out in opposite directions from the plane of the plates.

Abstract: This invention provides an auxiliary heating and cooling circuit for an automobile interior compartment. The auxiliary circuit uses a circulated liquid heat transfer fluid such as the same liquid used for the vehicle engine system. In a cooling mode, the liquid is circulated through a heat exchanger within the vehicles air-conditioning circuit. The cooled fluid flows to an auxiliary heat exchanger where cooled air is made available. In a heating mode, the auxiliary system is connected directly with the engines cooling system where the hot engine coolant flows through the auxiliary heat exchanger for interior compartment heating.

Abstract: An improved mast arrangement for a mobile multi-function rig has a winch line extending from an upper end of the mast and a traveling block supported thereon. A trolley mountable on the mast is adapted for coupling to the traveling block. The trolley works primarily as a guide for a given load, and therefore is of a lightweight design since loads mounted to the trolley are transferred directly to the traveling block and the supporting winch line. The trolley provides the capability to readily switch between various rig operations, including manipulating coiled tubing with an injector, setting surface casing using a top drive, operating the winch and traveling block for joined pipe operations, and interchanging between top drive and joined pipe operations without removing the top drive from the mast or rig.
