Abstract: The present invention provides adapter 30 that supplies driving power from battery charger 10, which charges a battery pack, to cableless appliance 70, which is driven by the battery pack, via cable 44. Adapter 30 comprises charger-side adapter 40, which controls a charging voltage and a charging current of charger 10, an appliance-side adapter 45, which intermittently supplies a large current to the appliance 70 by utilizing power accumulated in capacitor C, which is disposed within the appliance-side adapter 45, and cable 44. By allowing a small current to continuously flow in cable 44 in order to charge capacitor C and by intermittently supplying the power accumulated in capacitor C to appliance 70, a large amount of power can be supplied to appliance 70. Accordingly, appliance 70 can be continuously used without the battery pack.

Abstract: A battery operated computer system implements a power management scheme based on battery behavior. The battery behavior that is monitored as part of the power management scheme may include battery temperature, current, voltage, and/or capacity. In response to one or more of these battery parameters exceeding a threshold, the computer transitions itself to a lower power consumption mode. In so doing, the potential for the battery to shut itself off due to being over-extended (e.g., over current) is reduced.

Abstract: In a control system of a regeneration system, electric power generated by a first electric generator is supplied to a first electric power storing device, and electric power is transmitted, via an intermediary device, between the first electric power storing device and a second electric power storing device which is provided separately from the first electric power storing device. The control system of a regeneration system includes determination means for determining whether or not an electric power generation amount of the first electric generator is equal to or larger than a predetermined amount, and electric power storing performance control means for determining whether or not the electric power of the second electric power storing device is to be supplied to the first electric power storing device via the intermediary device based on a determination result of the determination means.

Abstract: A dynamoelectric machine combining the functions of an exciter, a turning motor, and a starting motor for a turbine. The machine operates in a first mode where the slip between a first stator winding and a first armature winding is positive and thus the magnetic fields interact and operate as a motor to turn the turbine. In a second mode the slip is negative as the turbine turns the shaft and the first stator winding and the first armature operate as an exciter for supplying excitation to the rotating field winding of a main generator.

Abstract: Accumulation and emission of energy in and from a coil having an intermediate tap is controlled by switching a DC input voltage from a DC power source on and off. Controlled voltages generated at a plurality of terminals are rectified and smoothed to output a plurality of DC output voltages. Connection to a reference voltage is controlled such that the voltages generated at the plurality of terminals are not dependent on the DC input voltage during the on-off switching. Therefore, a switching power supply unit is provided in which a coil having an intermediate tap is used to allow a simple configuration, to convert a DC input voltage into a plurality of DC output voltages with high efficiency, and to achieve compactness.

Abstract: A buck regulator having a voltage sensor for sensing a voltage reversal caused by freewheeling current from an output inductor in the regulator. Upon sensing a reversed voltage, the voltage sensor triggers a gate controller to turn on a switch in the regulator, and thereby terminate a dead time. The voltage sensor and gate controller are high speed circuits, and therefore can reduce the duration of the dead time. Reducing the dead time duration improves efficiency by reducing the duration of body diode conduction. The dead time can be reduced to less than a turn-on time of the body diode, thereby preventing charge buildup in the body diode, and, consequently, preventing reverse recovery loss in the body diode. The present invention improves electrical conversion efficiency, and allows for increased operating frequency in buck regulators.

Abstract: A DC/DC converter has a semiconductor switch coupled to an inductor, a capacitor and a rectifier. A comparator is coupled to across the rectifier to detect a polarity reversal during the second portion of converter operation to place the converter in a low power mode if the voltage across the rectifier is of an appropriate polarity for reverse current flow. In some embodiments of the invention, the rectifier is a synchronous rectifier transistor and the voltage converter is placed in a low power mode when the polarity across the synchronous rectifier indicates that reverse current flow is possible. A timing circuit delays the generation of the control signal to place the converter in a low power mode until the steady state current is below a predetermined threshold for a predetermined amount of time.
