Abstract: A method of preparing a solids-pack for use in oilfield completion operations involves staged pumping using two distinct types of carrier fluid with distinct solids loadings during the solids deposition process. The method can be employed in packing of non-vertical oilfield wellbores for formation stabilization, fracture stabilization and/or sand control, particularly around sand exclusion devices. In preferred embodiments the method results in greater uniformity of packing, and also offers the advantage of much more rapid deposition and therefore of completion of the pack phase, reducing overall rig time.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for fluid treatment of a selected interval of a well and then cleaning the selected interval and the apparatus of treatment residue. An Out/In straddle tool is run into the well to treatment depth on fluid supplying tubing and has upper and lower packers that establish sealing with the casing and define an annular interval between the packers and between the tool and casing. Fluid, such as fracturing fluid, is pumped through the tubing to the tool and is diverted through an Out port of the tool into an upper portion of the annular interval. Fluid then flows from a lower portion of the annular interval through an In port below the Out port and at low flow rate is dumped into the casing through a pressure responsive dump valve. The Out port and In port are located to accomplish cleaning of residue from the packers.

Abstract: The present generally relates to apparatus and methods for instrumentation associated with a downhole deployment valve or a separate instrumentation sub. In one aspect, a DDV in a casing string is closed in order to isolate an upper section of a wellbore from a lower section. Thereafter, a pressure differential above and below the closed valve is measured by downhole instrumentation to facilitate the opening of the valve. In another aspect, the instrumentation in the DDV includes sensors placed above and below a flapper portion of the valve. The pressure differential is communicated to the surface of the well for use in determining what amount of pressurization is needed in the upper portion to safely and effectively open the valve. Additionally, instrumentation associated with the DDV can include pressure, temperature, and proximity sensors to facilitate the use of not only the DDV but also telemetry tools.

Abstract: A flow responsive dump valve mechanism for a straddle packer tool and has a valve controlled flow passage from which underflushed fluid, typically well treatment slurry, in a conveyance and fluid supplying tubing string can be dumped into a well casing. The dump valve mechanism incorporates a ratcheting power piston, an indexing mechanism and high and low load energy storage systems to accomplish open, closed and intermediate dump valve positions. The intermediate position increases the functionality of the tool by preventing accidental closure either due to the free fall of fluid through the coiled tubing or during flushing of the tool and permits the flow rate to be increased for thorough cleaning of the straddle tool and coiled tubing. For energy storage, a light compression spring provides power to cycle the indexing mechanism. Heavier load disc springs (Bellville Washers) are used to provide power for the ratcheting power piston to open the valve.

Abstract: A polyethylene composite is manufactured by passing an inner core of fabric mesh sandwiched between two sheets of polyethylene material through a conventional set of high-pressure rollers at room temperature. The pressure exerted by the rollers on the polyethylene material causes its fluidification, so that each polyethylene layer permeates through the open mesh of the core material, bonds to the other layer and incorporates the core fibers to form a laminate composite. The thickness of the polyethylene sheets in relation to the gap and speed of the rollers has to be judiciously selected so that the pressure applied to the material is sufficient to fluidize the polyethylene at ambient temperature. Because no heat is applied to the system, the laminate composite is rapidly cooled as it passes through the rollers and requires no additional forming or processing.

Abstract: A system for controlling drilling mud density at a location either at the seabed (or just above the seabed) or alternatively below the seabed of wells in offshore and land-based drilling applications is disclosed. The present invention combines a base fluid of lesser/greater density than the drilling fluid required at the drill bit to drill the well to produce a combination return mud in the riser. By combining the appropriate quantities of drilling mud with a light fluid, a riser mud density at or near the density of seawater may be achieved to facilitate transporting the return mud to the surface. Alternatively, by injecting the appropriate quantities of heavy fluid into a light return mud, the column of return mud may be sufficiently weighted to protect the wellhead. At the surface, the combination return mud is passed through a treatment system to cleanse the mud of drill cuttings and to separate the drilling fluid from the base fluid.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for the drilling, in particular the percussive or percussive rotary drilling of a hole (7) in earth or rock and for securing an anchorage in said hole. According to the invention, a bore hole (7) is created by a drill bit (1) mounted on a drill pipe (5) and a sliding sleeve (4) that surrounds the drill pipe (5) at a distance is simultaneously introduced. The invention is characterised in that a sliding sleeve (4) configured with a longitudinal slit (8) is introduced at least partially and rests substantially against the bore hole (7) during the drilling, whereby a reliable anchorage can be achieved with a simple construction by means of the sliding sleeve (4) with a longitudinal slit.

Abstract: Specific apparatus and associated methods are described for use in establishing the positions of locating field detectors and for path mapping within a region for the purpose of tracking and/or guiding the movement of an underground boring tool. In one aspect, an improvement is provided forming part of an arrangement for tracking the position and/or guiding the boring tool using an electromagnetic locating signal which is transmitted from the boring tool as the boring tool moves through the ground. At least two detectors are located at fixed positions within the region, each being operable in a transmit mode and in a receive mode such that each one of the detectors in the transmit mode is able to transmit a relative locating signal to the other detector for use in determining the relative position of one detector in relation to the other and such that both detectors receive the electromagnetic locating signal in the receive mode for use in determining the position of the boring tool within the region.
